Will this work on our 300D's?

No. You want the EF500 Super but NOT the ST version.

Yes. And you will be ready if you trade your camera up at some point for a 20D or other model using ETTL II.

Once again...the ST model will NOT work with the 20D. You need the DG model.

The one he posted is a DG ST model which will work. It does not have all the additional features of the Super however which has things like wireless master/slave functions and FEC which is very good to have with the Digital Rebel.

It flashes but has zero features. Why would you want to spend the money when you could get a full function unit that is also the choice for the 20D. If he gets a 20D in the future he will not be happy with that flash. By the way, I just got the 580EX - awesome flash! Pricey, but works perfectly with the 20D. I was told by many photographers not to get the Sigma ST model. Even my local camera store said it would be a bad choice for the Digital Rebel or 20D. Most people I know who got them by mistake returned them for the DG model.

Imagenese,
You are confusing the ST model with the DG ST model. The DG ST model is similar to the 420ex in that it has very few controls. Camera does the controlling. The DG Super model is more like the 550ex with full manual and many other options. I agree that he should get the Super but his question was whether the 500 DG ST (standard) works with the 300D and the answer is: not only does it work (or flash as you put it) but is a full ETTL (II) flash. He will however appreciate the extra features (such as FEC) on his 300D that the Super version offers.

Ovi

I believe you are mistaken, that flash IS the DG model. There are two of them DG Standard and DG Super. I have the Super and it has been a great flash! I can't speak for the ST, but the Super at $200 sure beats the 580ex at $480.

Ok so lets get back on track. I'll worry about a bigger flash when I upgrade to a 20D :D
So will the flash I have linked work?

Yes. I think imagesense was thinking of an earlier version. Both B&H and Sigma claim it'll give E-TTL II, just not all the bells and whistles of the 1/3 more expensive Super.

I currently have the Canon 420 EX which is similar to this Sigma flash (it's hard to tell but it appears the Sigma has even fewer features than the 420EX). Whil it appears that this flash will work with your camera, I have to say that the additional features on the DG Super are well worth the $50 you pay for them. This is especially true if you are not using the hack on your camera and you want some control over your flash output (which you do!).
I am considering the 500 DG Super to work with my 420 EX and ST-E2. While the 420 EX does a nice job, even with the FEC on the camera with the hack, it would be nice to have the manual features of the DG Super.
Does anyone know if the 500 DG Super has 2nd curtain sync capability.

Thanks Jon.
For the extra $50 I guess I can go ahead and get teh Super 500.

I have the super and it's worth the extra $50 IMHO. $200 is a great price for the usefulness of that unit. The 580EX gives a much better performance with the 20D, but for the Rebel, the Sigma is great.
If you plan on using your equipment professionally, I would definately go with a 550ex or 580ex. BTW, the recycle time of the 580ex beats the Sigma by a mile. I'm glad I have both because they will do master/slave and that will come in handy. That's another reason to go for the super DG over the standard in case you do get the 550 or 580 someday, you will be able to use them together for some creative lighting.
I only used the Sigma for one wedding before getting the 580ex but I will always carry it in my bag as a backup or throw it on my digital rebel for a second camera at receptions.

We need a flash comparison guide...
This can get crazy trying to choose a flash
money vs power
brand vs brand
output vs output
quality vs quality
image vs image

For professional work studio strobes are the only way to go! I will always carry a clipon flash just in case, but studio strobes and the be all and end all.

for weddings? I do know people who bring and use studio lights at weddings, but I don't like to drag all of that gear around in a fast paced event like a wedding. Also, I don't like to alter the ambiance of the room that the couple is spending all that money to experience.
I work very simply with a camera & flash on a bracket and a few lenses in a bag. Some photographers like to do tradional prtraiture at weddings but not me. I like the PJ approach where I'm not running the event. Easier for me that way.

If that is the case then a nice big metz on a bracket is ideal. I don't put a lot of faith in the clip on flashes, maybe that is just me.

Oh yeah, I use the Metz 45CL-4 with my Hasselblad, but for digital, you just don't need it. The 580EX is plenty and the Sigma works great too.
With the ability to use higher iso speeds instantly, a big light is not really necessary.

You can get the 580 EX for $385 from dell and then you have the rebate of $20 for a total of $365 not too bad. As far as the sigma in the same class as the 580EX not a chance by far. I love the 580EX what a great flash VS the 550EX. I will be selling my other 550EX's soon and going all the way with the 580EX just love the flash. Very much improved worth the upgrade.
