View Full Version : Is travel to Jamaica with camera safe?

I am going to Ocho Rios for my honeymoon and want to take my Canon 40D and a few lenses. What I am afraid of is having my equipment stolen while on vacation. I have a small point and shoot Canon that I will take with no problem, but I'm sure there are going to be times when the DSLR is going to be missed if it is at home. Anyone have words of wisdom for me?

Thanks,

Maurice

Words of wisdom:

It's your Honeymoon - don't bring the 40D. You might take the odd snapshot here and there, but you should be doing other things while on honeymoon. You'll have the rest of your life to do photography.

Insure it. Talk to the agent you have your auto, homeowners, or whatever, policy with about getting an Inland Marine or Personal Articles policy on your gear. Then never have to worry (as long as you keep the premiums up) about it again. Works for water, fire, theft, or other loss.

+1 for just take the P&S...

Unless your bride to be is heavily into shooting as well, nothing screws up a once in a lifetime event faster than a "one sided" hobby. Throw in the stress of wondering if your gear is safe and, well...

Good Luck

OOC, do you have an idea of the cost range of such insurance? I might be looking that direction in the not-too-distant future.

IIRC I'm paying $1/$1000 coverage. So somewhere in that range.

Insure your gear, and leave it at home. Take the point and shoot.
Hopefully you will have other things to do on your honeymoon.

Maybe that's what he's photographing. Maurice could be one of the fastest photographers to gain access to the G&N forum.

What company are you using? That's from vague memory - I try not to think about what I've wasted^h^h^h^h^h^hspent on this stuff. On collecting more info, it's maybe about $1/$100 per year. Erie. We have home, condo and cars with them as well, so there's a better rate than you'd get with just the equipment. And we've been with them for many years, which also helps.

Thanks for all the good advise! I hope to be doing more than just taking photos on my honeymoon also!!! LOL!! I'm sure I can take some good pics with the P&s that way I can travel light. We are staying at Sandals in Ocho Rios and planning on go to Nine Miles and Dunns River Falls. Very excited about the trip!!! Next time I will take my gear and get some great photos.

unless you and your soon to be spouse are both photographers then I'd leave the big guns at home.

Dunns River Falls.

A perfect reason for not taking the big camera. Your "Tour guide" will take your camera from you (and all others as well) and use your camera to take a photo of you and your wife as you are frolicking in the water, and falling back into one of the pools of water along the way to the top.

He will give it back to you at the top (after you have given him a tip of course).

Plan on getting wet when you go. You will enjoy it. :D

I brought a lot of my gear on my honeymoon, used it all, got a bunch of great pictures, made a nice album when I got home, glad I did it. YMMV. ;)

I do have all of my gear insured though, and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
