View Full Version : Black and White + Colour Filters

Back in the days of processing and printing my own black and white film, I sometimes used a red filter on landscapes to create darker skies and make the clouds stand out, a technique I had forgotten when I migrated to colour film and the 1 hour lab.

Recently with my digicam when I wanted an image in black and white I simply desaturated the image in Photoshop.

Whilst getting aquanted with my 20D, I was reading through the manual (yes really!) and found that it had different 'filter' modes for the black and white setting.

Since up till now I have always taken images in colour to keep my options open, and do the black and white conversion in PS.

Time to bring out PS CS and have a play!

I set up a number of adjustment layers, each using a different photographic filter, then on top of this I put a desaturate on top and compared the results. My main interest here was portraits, I found the green filter to create quite reasonable results compared with a simple desaturate or the other filters.

What experience has anyone else had with this? What colours do you use for different situations, and what level of filtration (I used 75% for the green, although it was a tad dark)?
