I have a question to Lightroom users. Why do the images appear to have a limited pallete and/or suffer from something like posterization? ACR seems to do the same thing.

I hate this, how do I adjust the settings to make the images look better on preview?

I've delved through the sparse settings and have found nothing.

Also, does anyone else find Lightroom slow and sluggish? I've avoided using it and just use DPP cause DPP displays the images well and it is lightweight and speedy.

Any advice on this would help.

It's impossible to tell without seeing pictures....

Do the previews you're seeing match the exported images, or is there a difference?

I suspect your operating system (windows/mac os) is set it to use too few colors. Check that out.

No no, Lightroom and ACR are the only programs to exhibit this phenomenon. Windows is in 32bit color mode like it should be.

As I already stated, I can open a RAW image in DPP and it looks just fine. Then I open the image in Lightroom and it looks like crap.

I don't have any images to show as I'd have to photograph the monitor and I'm not entirely sure that the bad quality would be apparent in the photos. I can try that but not till I get home later today.

You need to give much more detailed information before anyone can make a reasonable guess at the cause of your problem. For example, after opening the image in DPP what is your next step? Do you convert the image to TIFF, PSD, or JPEG and then open it in Lightroom or do you open the same RAW file directly in Lightroom?

I'm not talking about a final outcome of any image.

I thought I already made this clear but if I didn't here it is again.

I open a RAW image in DPP. That image looks fine. Then I open the same RAW image in Lightroom and that image appears posterized or of a lower color bit depth.

This has nothing to do with whether the image is exported as a tiff, jpg or whatever. It doesn't come to that point. It is viewing RAW images only. It may happen to jpeg but I don't recall.

This is the same with ACR and Lightroom and has occurred on all versions of Lightroom including 1.0 , 1.4 and 2.0 beta and previous versions of ACR. This is also across multiple installations of Windows over many many months. There is nothing even remotely similar with any other types of images or any other programs.

On the contrary, it has everything to do with whether or not you had converted the RAW and imported it into Lightroom or ACR.

But since we appear to be getting off of the wrong footing, I'll leave it for someone else to explain why a RAW file produced by a Canon camera looks different in DPP as compared to Lightroom or Adobe Camera RAW. Then perhaps you'll understand why I asked the question.

But I am not opening a converted RAW file in Lightroom. RAW images opened in Lightroom or ACR don't just look different, like a different hue or tone curve or something. They look BAD, like they're close to 8 bit color. This cannot be intentional and I'm simply trying to find out why it's doing this and how to fix it.

Nobody else has ever seen such an issue?

If you're talking about the difference between a raw file viewed in ACR/LR and the same raw file viewed in DPP or converted as a camera jpeg, that's simply down to different processing - each raw converter will give a different result.

That said, there may be more to it than that.

For example, have you checked your default settings in ACR/LR. Could you be applying odd defaults, other than the 0,0,0,5,50,25, medium contrast tone curve standard defaults.

Other than that, we really need a screen capture to be able to diagnose further. It's something like ctrl-print screen and paste into a graphics program (Paint, Photoshop etc) - I can remember the exact key combo for windows screen capture.

I believe when LR displays a RAW image in the preview mode, it's displaying the jpg image embedded in the file. What does the picture look like when you get it into the loupe view?

Not quite Toney - it does show the embedded jpeg for a split second, and then it builds its own previews.
