Hey guys,

Just got my 400D and managed to spend an hour at Coombe Abbey in Coventry this week while Im working away.

I took this picture - and trust me the building does not lean like it looks here on the left !!!

It was taken with the 18-55 kit lens wide open.

I'm guessing this is barrel distortion - but how best to correct it .... if possible ?

I have CS2, so any advice using this as a tool would be great :)

Regards,
D

Should be the same in CS2. Go to Filter --> Distort --> Lens Correction

Also, it's not just barrel distortion; there's keystoning as well. (because the camera isn't level)

Thanks for the help.

Rene, what is keystoning ? Not come across that term before...

René Damkot is right, there is a bit of keystoning there. Basically it is the perspective that causes distortion. You can fix it in the same menu using the sliders in Transform.

The 18-55 does have significant barrel distortion at 18 mm. This is a lens problem - most wide angle lenses (even expensive ones) have it.

OTOH, the keystoning isn't a lens issue - it'll happen any time you shoot with the camera pointed up. There are lenses that can eliminate this perspective distortion, but nothing you can do with your lens except stand on a 30 foot stepladder so the camera focal plane is parallel to the building.

As you can see, correcting the keystoning took care of most of the distortion.

This is where you need a lens that shifts.
