Do you feel if I use 1DmkIII for potrait shoots is overkill?

I plan to use 1DmkIII mainly for potrait, fashion show and concert.

no, it's flexible enough that you can do everything from chasing down a bride / celebrity, to still portraits.

Portrait, maybe. Fashion, no. Concert, again no. If you can afford it, why not? What lenses will you pair with it?

I dont know why it would be overkill for portraits.
I would rather use a FF (5D or 1DsIII) for portraits though. I dont think those are overkill either.

no camera is overkill for any job, they are all limp compared to the human eye, so having the absolute best you can possibly have is justice for the photography at hand :)

I use two 1DMIIIs for concert shooting. They are excellent for that purpose. Wouldn't hesitate to use them for portraits but I have a 1DsMIII for that. Can't imagine they wouldn't work well for fashion unless the publisher wants huge image files.

Read my 'How I Got Started ...' and you may be a bit less jealous ... I got my heart cut open before I got successful.

The 1D III is perfect for everything you need.

If I was strictly shooting fashion and didn't NEED the 1D based on it's ergonomics then I would go with the much cheaper but almost equally capable (if not more for fashion) 5D.

Consider your options, given your circumstances I wouldn't hesitate on the 5D!

I don't think that it is overkill. I know plenty of photographers that shoot with the 1DSMKIII. I shoot with the 1DMKIII and think its perfect. I also know photographers that shoot portraits for mags and stuff that use the H3D. So I dont think the 1DMKIII is overkill at all.

Depends how much you charge for your portraits and the quality of the images YOU are capable of producing. If you're putting out Wal-Mart quality a Wal-Mart pricing, then yeah it's definitely overkill.

1Ds2 is overkill for portraits work, so can't comment if 1Ds3 will be overkill as well, so i can see if the 5D is very suitable, then 1D3 is very nice for that, but i prefer FF always for portraits and landscapes after using all those cameras.

Paul Buceta, a POTN member who hasn't posted in a while in G&N, started with something like an Digital Rebel and did fantastic work. He was picked up by a number of magazines. He switched to 1DsMII, IIRC, and when I asked why since his work didn't need it, he said that the magazines required big files. There can be many reasons to use particular bodies. I have one because I can and don't need to justify it, but I also expect that when I want to print a 24" x 36" fine art print that there will a difference.

and i have a printer that print 17x22" and it can print up to 17x35" at most, so i don't want to limit myself to 8x10 or 12x18" or A4-A3, i would like to go larger and larger, so that i always looking for better camera for larger prints [not just better quality if it is for web and A4 prints only].
