Too many buttons, need bigger CF cards, D%$m this camera takes pictures fast

Yes it arrived and I have it in my greedy little hands, despite the best efforts of Fed Ex to let some one else pick it up from my porch.
Nothing better then checking on the status (expecting it to be attempted delivery returning to station) and seeing delivered left on front porch.

An $8000 camera left on front porch....arggh.... run home after checking with the person I am supporting today that they don't need me. No bricks, no empty box, there is a box, and it has yes....

A brand new CANON 1DS MARK II sixteen point seven mega pixels of righteous resolution.

Love to send a picture, but I am on the computer that does not have the functions I need to FTP an image to my web site, you will have to wait a bit for that (I still need to check my email so will post when I do that on the other computer)

Had it since 3:25pm, but had to stay off phone line (only have one) until after 5pm just in case my boss needed me.

first impressions
- Still waiting for battery to charge
- why no hand strap
- It seems to be lighter then my 10D w/battery grip and two BP-511s (note running of DC converter right now)
- It turns on real quick
- 4FPS is quite fast enough thank you. I only wanted one picture not two, back to single shot mode
- Seems to have much better AF then 10D, definately has more focus points which tend to hit the correct object more often (so far)
- darn rainy day
- PS CS no work, must wait for update
- seems a bit soft compared to straight out of 10D, reminds me of first impression of D60 shots
- My 1 gig 40x Lexar goes noticeably faster then my standard 1gig Sandisk, did I mention I need a bigger CF card
- firewire - woo hoo!!!
- And I thought 150 images per hour was a bit excessive, with this puppy I will be spending more time transfering the images to my computer then taking them. I filled up the 1gig San disk while waiting for the 40X lexar to transfer using my computer's card reader. And I wasn't even trying.
- battery done and yes it took 2 hours as stated.

to sum it all up.........niiiccce, very nice.

nah nah nah nah!!! 8) 8)

Enough with the softness already! ;)

The new generation Canon's have a wider dynamic range than the earlier cameras so they give humans the perception of softness. Wait until you start sharpening those bad boys! You can USM till the cows come home.

Congrats on the new toy!

How bad is the front focus?

Congrats, Tim. I look forward to fondling it at Christmas.

Well I thought my 20D was sexy. That camera of yours is certified pornographic.

It's grotesque. It's excessively excessive.

Damn I'd love to have one!

Actually....There are a few early reports that when in multiframe mode the last frame goes wacky. One user said the frame was white, one said his was pink. Check over on Galbraith's site.

Too Cool!

It will be heavier with the battery. that thing weighs a bit on it's own

Check out Jim's post in Cornering the Pros on 4GB Microdrives for $129.00 :)

the 4GB MD is not only big.. but REALLY freaken fast in the MkII!

Do you have a 135mm f/2L?

I heard it locks up when you change CF cards.

No, wait, the pictures turn pink when you change lenses.

No, wait, it sidefocuses. Yep, that's it. I heard it sidefocuses.

Tell me about it. Canon really needs to step up to the plate and not release these products with these bugs. I can't believe they are unknown to the engineers as they have been too dang obvious. They did pretty good with the MKII though.

Let me go find the link.

My 1DsII arrived on Friday, and it's dead and going back to the dealer tomorrow.
One picture at a time is ok, take several in quick succession and screen turns white and no record is kept.
I assume the buffer RAM is dead.

Next post:

Well, I did a set of tests, shooting bursts.

If I shoot 5 or 6 images and just wait, they seem to be written to the card ok.

If I press "Display" to look at the images *after* the burst, the screen brings up junk, and the camera hangs on write, and needs to be reset by taking out the battery. The files seem lost; from the point in the buffer writing process where display is pressed. In my opinion as a customer, a camera that hangs while reviewing is not to spec, and I am returning it tomorrow to the dealer. I will request a new unit rather than a repair. It's a pity because this unit was sweet.

Here's the other one:

http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=285434&page=1&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

Excerpt:

I fired 6 frames, and on the 7th pink. pure pink. No matter what I did. Changed lenses, switched from raw to jpg. Pulled both batteries, fired it up on the AC adapter. Switched to all my cards. Nothing. Just pink. Amazing after 6 frames.

While I wait for my FTP upload...

To make you all feel better

It actually appears to back focus (by about 2mm at 2km)

It is heavier with the battery installed (but seems still lighter then the 10D with Big Ed)

I was going to send a full res, min compression, large jpeg, but my dial-up line couldn't handle it (okay so maybe this is not necessarily a negative)

No more 16bit Tif saves for me (96MB for one image)

As soon as the FTP is done I will have
- one full size jpeg at PS 8 compression no enhancements saved from RAW from TIF16bit.
- one med-size original out of the camera jpeg
- and one 100% crop at PS 10 res with some sharpening.

No critiques on lighting, exposure or color balance. I am only on page 10 of the 100+ page manual. And all of the buttons are in different places.

one other negative, I am not sure yet that I like how much effort it takes to change settings, some require two fingers on one hand and grip and finger on the other, instead of 1 hand does most with the occasional single finger on the other hand. Also reviewing images is a pain compared to my 10D. On the flip side, after I start shooting I don't change many buttons.

I had to ACTUALLY READ the manual to figure out how to get it to work.

images should be up in my next post.

Okay this is technically the 35 and 59th pictures I took but close enough

link to 100% crop jpeg saved at PS 10 (it is a small 683KB)
http://www.longwatcher.com/images/Misc%20for%20update/VI0S0035_unedited%20crop.jpg

link to full size jpeg after RAW to TIF to JPEG otherwise straight from camera (almost forgot this one is 1meg)
http://www.longwatcher.com/images/Misc%20for%20update/VI0S0009%20(1B).jpg

and finally one for us dialup folks reduced to 800x533 (a measly 130KB)
http://www.longwatcher.com/images/Misc%20for%20update/VI0S0009%20(1).jpg

I thought I had a picture of me with it in my hand, but apparently I forgot to move it from my poor forgotten 10D

Just tried this, I got worried for a second because it did seem that the write
function hung up, but after pressing display a couple more times it finished, so it may or may not be a problem. I sort of like that it displayed the image before it had finished writing all of the ones I just took.

....And after looking at the back for a moment, I had my slow Sandisk card in and was shooting RAW + L instead of RAW + M2 like I had been for most of the first 80-100 images.

However, mine seems to work fine so far

One other negative, this shutter is LOUD, no sneaking around taking pictures from hide. At least my models will know I am taking a picture now.
Speaking of models, I need to go offline to free up my phone so hopefully my model tomorrow will call and confirm she is showing up.

Too bad my 1DsMkII only impresses other photographers :) 8) :)

Hmmm. Seems there's something there, but I'm sure a simple firmware fix will clean that up.

As for the shutter being loud: Welcome to 1-series land. You have a quarter-million actuation shutter there, so it will be a bit noisier than the pro-sumer cams. However, there is a hush feature...

Tim:
I don't necessarily expect you to remember, but if you do, is the shutter as loud or louder than my 1D Mk II?

If the mirror is roughly the same size as the sensor, I might think mirror slap might be a bit more pronounced.
