You are so unspecific.

First you'll need a 550 and 420. Both EX versions.

What are you trying to do?

sorry.. ya they are both EX. im gonan ahve my 550ex on my hot shoe on my 20d. and i wanna put the 420EX on a bracket. which i can still use on my tripod... so i am seeing which bracket will allow me to still mount my camera on a tripod. and if any cables or transmitters i would need to use the 420EX as a slave to the 550ex.

Whatever you'll be doing with that pair, you really have to take the time to get a feel for how they work together. The 420 has no means of cranking down the output, no manual mode, and so you get as much light as the camera/flash pair decide to give you. Sometimes that's way too much, and sometimes it's not nearly enough. And sometimes it's just right. Take as much time as you can, and shoot subjects as much like your target subjects as possible. It's way too easy to end up with blown-out areas and very weird shadows.

The 550EX will work on your camera as a wireless master flash. The 420EX will work on a stand as a wireless slave. No cables or other gear is needed. There are people on this forum that can go into detail on how to set this up, but I'm not one of them. Where are you Scott? :?:

You don't need a cable, you can use the 420 EX as a slave and 550 EX as a master for wireless E-TTL flash.

Read the following, it's a treasure chest full of information about Canon's flash system: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

This is discussed in two articles in the EOS Flash Sticky.
