View Full Version : other brands

Lately just about any thread that talks about nikon's new offerings has been closed because of militant arguments, name callings, suggestions to leave the forum and fights.
I am wondering if we could have one dedicated section to other brands. I know this is a canon forum and my reasoning is that it would be beneficial to canon owners to be able to discuss their concerns such as the nikon D3 outshining the M3 and getting some honest feedback about both brands before switching...etc...
I know I'm not putting this very well. But if I could give a little background...recently I considered switching. I've had issues with the M3 aiservo and tried to be non-militant about it, since after all it was my choice to buy it. But I did start looking at nikon, especially since the D3 offers so much in many ways.
But I had to go to a nikon forum for information. Which of course, you run into fan boys over there too...and I don't want fan boys on either side...I wanted information. I searched the web for reviews and user concerns and anything I could think of. What I found was a lot of reasons TO switch.
THEN I actually (in between threads being closed) had some good discussions with people on here about nikon lenses and the D3's user interface...things that I hadn't thought much about (assuming their offerings were much like canon's). Things that really made me think twice about switching. Ultimately I chose not to...but it was because of the information provided. Not because of the abuse hurled.
And it was very hard to get that information because so many people jumped on the bandwagon who a: never used the equipment (either the M3 OR the nikons) but felt the need to say "go to a nikon forum, this is canon based" or just "you don't like canon...leave". Or any other number of things.
I think having information regarding other brands is just consumer wisdom. It wouldn't make this a non-canon forum...it would just provide us (both newbies entering the field, people who want to go beyond the xt series & people like me who got disillusioned) with NEEDFUL information before they make a choice they'll regret (whether that choice is pro or anti canon).
My point is that we are all photographers. I don't care how someone else spends their money and how I spend mine is my business. I just want to grow in my craft and be informed. I thought if we had a new section, then the "go away or leave this forum" nonsense would stop and perhaps rational discussions could evolve.

Interesting. An not particarily a bad idea. I have friends with Nikons and I shot with a couple of ladies that shot with Sonys. I purchased a Nikon for my boss (a P&S) based research I had to do here & elsewhere and reccomendations from my friends (one of which is a Nikon rep). So a comparison section might not be a bad idea. It would certainly encourage adult discussion rather than flaming at least IMHO.

The biggest problem would be that all the same name-calling would go on in there . . . IOW, the problem's not so much that other brands are being mentioned in Canon forums as it is that sometimes people are unable to maintain rational discussion when other people make posts which they don't agree with. Witness the 1D3 AF threads. How many of those have been closed, and how many hundreds of posts were deleted because the topic led to factionalization? It doesn't matter where you post some things, they're going to provoke explosions. Setting up a separate area for "other brand" discussions also has a real risk of diluting the POTN focus. As it is, gear is discussed (at whatever level of civility) in a Canon context. Removing it from that context would be a step on the path toward POTN just being another DPR, at the cost of what makes us unique.

and that's something I definitely don't want...
you are right Jon...we could be civil anywhere. Unfortunately we're not. I just was thinking that if there was a place to discuss things like that, it'd weed out the people who feel they need to justify their own purchases by putting everything/one else down.
I really appreciate POTN. I'm just looking for a way to perhaps make more information available & with less acrimony :)

I have a question, asked in complete sincerity.
Do you think POTN has become diluted since the Wedding forum upheaval last year and some of the recent changes?

maybe i should phrase this another way.
why is the name calling tolerated?
why is the thread locked down because of name calling?
surely if there is valid discussion going on, the poor posts can be pruned from the thread and a warning pm sent.

sometimes things get heated and ooc...really the members should be policing their own behavior...and frankly some take great joy out of being abusive.
The mods around here are very tolerant, the do a lot of warning before banning. It shows a good heart an a willingness to make everyone (though not every behavior) be welcome :)

Either system works fine.
I switched from Nikon about 8 months ago, because I could get work and rent my gear to myself if I went Canon.
So Ive got a 5D w 6 lenses and a flash and genuine 2x extender.
The diff is everythings of the same generation so everything works like the book.
A clean slate. I love it.

i'd like it even more if i could get into Glamour and Nude :p
as a newb i'd say that on the whole this is an excellent forum and i've modded a few.
the forum genius and willingness to help floats to the top time after time and that's what keeps me coming back.

Thanks Andrew. You only have 9 more days before you qualify for a G&N pass ;)
Your observation that name calling is a childish behavior is quite astute. I only wish it were shared by more members.
It is with great reluctance that threads are locked or removed. Such action is taken only after the thread has degenerated so much that productive conversation is unlikely.

It's because of the fact that this is an exclusively canon forum that (in part) the discussions get so heated. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that everyone knows a lot about my Canon, but I think that Nikon (and sony, pentax etc) are great companies as well. I think that there are a lot of people here that really get joy out of bashing other brands/etc. which I do not understand. I do think creating another forum would help with this - why would canon fanboys frequent the forum for other cameras? Unless they REALLY love to bash every other brand :O

sony , canon , nikon who gives a toss
a good shot is a good shot period.
the most worrying thing about this forum is the canon owners that have "lost" their manuals :lol::lol::lol:

I'm a user of both Canon (Digital & film) and Nikon (film), and to be honest if I want any info, advice, or just general chat on anything to do with Nikon I'll go to a Nikon forum, where I'll get info biased somewhere nearer to an answer, rather than risk staring a debate about whether I need my head examining for daring to even mention the word Nikon :-)
I think this subject has cropped up a few times round here, and at the end of the day this is a forum dedicated to CANON DIGITAL photography, so that immediately 'alienates' any other brand, which is fair enough - you'd get the same in a Ford car forum if people started talking about Volkswagen Golf's.
Don't get me wrong, I love this place, and in general it's friendly and there is a lot of knowledge here, but the whole point of the site is to be dedicated towards Canon Digital camera systems.
The 'Talk About Photography' section is about the best place (IMO) to be brave and post about other brands, and depending on who answers you may get a sensible reply...
Hey, I've mentioned Nikon four (now five) times and I'm still h...../

Agree with Uncle Kev ... I can find out about anything by searching and using common sense to filter responses made on other forums or in reviews. It's easy to spot people who have an 'irrational' bias against X or Y.
But at some point there is need to make a judgement call about priorities that one may have and either take a risk or not. Reality is few will have objective, worthwhile experience of current Nikon and Canon gear, or indeed of other brands. So we each are left with our own judgement.
I'd vote for keeping things as they are at POTN.

Hey, we don't tolerate name calling in this forum no matter who the target of the name calling is. So, consider yourself slapped in the wrist and sent to the corner with a dunce cap on for the next hour or so.
