I sold my G5 recently, and wouldn't you know it, I've been kicking myself for selling it. I hadn't used it in awhile, now all of a sudden I have many projects going on that require more than a simple P & S type camera (my S400 to be exact).

I almost bought an S70 last week, but stories of poor performance outside its initial 28mm focal range have nipped that in the bud. I wanted a compact cam with manual controls, but not at the expense of poor images.

The G6 seems like the all-arounder I need after deciding its size is actually pretty reasonable for the features it packs.

Can't wait to get it! Prolly early next week...

Good choice. Image quality with the G6 is clearly better than that of the S70, despite using the same CCD.

Make sure you hang on to this one..........

Canon G6 is the Best of the breed. Great choice. Almost all the problems faced by the users of G5 have been corrected. So,it is a smart buy. Have fun shooting with ur wuld-be camera.

How do the G5 and G6 compare against each other for size and body foot-print?

Hi All,

This is my first post. Though I am a heavy user of Olympus digital cameras, I have always wanted a G series camera. Today I have ordered a G6 from Dell for around $564, shipping included. The list price was $699, and they had three great deals for today - 15% off, an additional $30 off when you use the code 'L704J?P9SNKCD1' and free shipping. After today and the first 2500 users the code will expire, but the 15% off and free shipping will stay for a while but not for very long I think.

I look forward to learning and sharing the joy and nuances of the G6 with you people, I am so excited to lay my hands on it. Thanks!

Got my G6 Thursday of last week. Bought it from ElectricSam.com for $551 shipped (had it to me in 3 days!).

I'm very pleased with this baby. Much better than my old G5. I've read where people complained about its poor low-light focussing. but I must have gotten lucky because the G6 I have in hand locks focus damn near immediately in most low-light situations. I think people forget that the focus on these cameras relies on contrast and when they can't get focus lock on a plain white wall they bitch and scream about it.... LOL.

I've also read about the blur problem in the corners. Well.. I would expect some edge/corner blur with any lens but the absulute best and most expensive, and if you're a pixel-peeper on the most minute of scales, then you'll prolly find some blur there as well. The images I'm getting with my G6 are very sharp after USM and I'm damn pleased!

I also looked at and held the Sony DSC-V3 before buying, and although it takes nice pics and has great focus, the ergonomics and placement of buttons frustrated me. The Sony is also around $100 more than the G6.

OTT, I'm glad this forum is back up and running. I'm sick of the dpreview Canon Talk forum where all people do is discuss "Pro-1 vs G6" or bitch about every little miniscule thing their camera doesn't do well. HA!

Now I'm going back outside to take some pics. Its a great day here in NC today!

With all that I have read on the newest G6, I'd say it would be my pick over a G5 or a Pro1 even.

I held a G6 at Best Buy, and it's really neat. I have big hands so the grip is slightly tight. Nothing to be concerned about though. If I didn't have a G3 and love it so much, I would have bought the G6 right there, and explained it to my wife later.

Oh threads like this don't help me...
G6 or Drebel, still pondering.

I have a Canon G6 and am extremely happy with the image quality. I take all my pictures in raw mode. I had to go out and buy 2x 1gb Cf cards to cater for our holiday to thailand (allowed me to take about 600 shots), since which ive made several 8x11 and larger prints.

I chose the G6 over the Canon Pro1based on all the negative feedback received from the 8mb sensor as per dpreviews comments and the then slow focus speed of the pro1.

I didnt go to the SLR range due my total lack of interest in lugging around several lens and the associated costs of building up a descent lens library.

I have a question, is it possible to increase optical zoom with G6?

Thanks

You can add-on a telephoto lens using a lens adapter. From what I've seen, a 1.75x or 2x add-on telephoto is as much as you want to go while still obtaining acceptable results image-wise.

This gives you 7x or 8x zoom total, depending on which add-on you use.

With the adapter, you can also add-on wide-angle, macro, or close-up lenses.
