I am looking for a decent lens for indoor (hockey) and night time (baseball, soccer) sports. How well does the 200 2.8 fit the bill? Will the 2.8 be fast enough?

You're not going to do much better than 2.8 unless you are ready to spend much more (hello 200mm F/2L!), I used my 200mm prime at a lacrosse game that started late in the evening and went into night, I was able to go 1/640 at 1600iso. Of course, your results may vary.. but you can go 3200iso with your 20D, I have an XTi.

Exposure issues aside, top-notch lens, if you find yourself near 200mm alot with your 70-200, go get the prime, that's what I did..

The 200 f2.8 L is quite a bit more than "decent". As far as f2.8 lenses are concerned, it's as good as they come. The 7-2 f2.8, 7-2 f2.8 IS, and 135+1.4x can't touch it.

Anybody wanna buy a used 400mm f2.8 then? ??? :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Seriously, the 200 f2.8 is an excellent lens that I use indoors for sports quite a bit. But then the 135 f2.0L is no slouch either.

I was assuming 200mm f2.8 lenses, not every single f2.8 out there (e.g., 300 f2.8 IS, 400 f2.8 IS). :D
