Has anyone had any problems working with raw files. I recently did a photoshoot in texas where I rented all the equipment for the shoot. this consisted of a 20D setup. I shot the images all in large jpeg+raw so I could have multiple options in post. I transfered all of the images via a card reader to my computer and installed the software that came with the camera rental. Now that I am home, I cant seem to be able to work with the raw files. when I open the cannon file viewer utility, i can see all of the jpegs just fine but i cant do anything with the raw files. Do I need an update? or a different program?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you install the eos viewer that came with the 20D? You may need to upgrade to the 20D processing.

You should be able to upgrade via the website.

If I read your original post correctly, your problem may be the fact that you are using the File Viewer Utility (FVU) instead of the newer EOS Viewer Utility (EVU). FVU will not read the newer CR2 raw files because it has not been updated to do so ever since the EVU replaced FVU. If you don't have EVU installed, you can download it from the Canon site. Don't delete FVU from your system because you will need it to upgrade to EVU.

When I downloaded eos viewer utility and tried to install it, it has some funny looking questionmarks all over the thing. Do anyone else get this also? I didn't install it after seeing that stuff...I also checked for viruses.

What do you mean by funny looking question marks all over the thing. Where did you see this?

Canon has inadvertently put a Japanese language version of the EOS Viewer Utility update on their web site, according to posters on FM and Rob G. Hopefully, they will correct this soon.

I guess Canon got wind of some people belittling their Japanese-English translation skills and decided to just give people the original, straight-from-th-horse's-mouth, version of the software and let those people worry about translating the darn thing themselves.

FYI, Chuck Westfall reported the problem and Canon is expected to make the correction some time this evening (US time).

I have been using BreezeBrowser ever since I tried to use the utility shipped with the D30. Chris has a beta version that can handle the 20D RAW format and you can find it on his website. http://www.breezesys.com/

It's up there now but I did have a little problem so I thought I should alert you guys about it.

Before you install the correct (English) Windows version it forces you to uninstall the Japanese version first through Add/Remove programs. When you go to install the correct version of the software it can't find a previous installation and fails (because this is an update). You have to find your original CD, install the v.1.0 software then do the upgrade.

By the way...since everything is either Japanese or "????" you have to guess at the "Yes", "No", "Finish" dialogue boxes. :D

I installed the Japanese version once yesterday, and ended up uninstalling it. If you've already gotten the Japanese version installed (and you cannot read Japanese), then use Windows "add and remove programs" under Control Panel to remove the updated version. This will clean EVU off your computer so you'll have to go back to the original disks as msnow says and reinstall the earlier version before upgrading.
