How can you tell if a member is currently online?

Like the topic says.
From viewing a topic with posts in a forum, I can't tell who is online or not. Do we have to go to a person's profile to see or is there some setting ..

Or

Am I just missing the button that tells you that a user is online.

Members can hide their login status so not all are there.

In a somewhat related question. How can you find a member if he/she is not online. Few times I wanted to PM somebody but the search doesn't lead to the person's profile so I can PM them from there. (sounds confusing I know).

Easiest way I know to find someone's profile on or off line is to find a post they have made.
You could also use the search function for a message they posted.

I tried that and actually that (searching) was the reason I asked. Unless you find a thread started by that person, finding a comment posted by them doesn't help, since you can't PM them from a comment (hope that makes sense).

You can use the search command at the top of the page: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/search.php, the second box is for author. Enter their name in that box, select 'search,' and you'll get every thread they've posted to. Pick any thread, find that person's post(s), click on PM, and you're good to go.

Did a search (on myself) and from the search page you can't pm the person you are searching for because only the person who started the thread is listed.
But if you go into the thread and go to where the person posted you have the pm option with all the other standard options.

Right. I didn't realize you were leaving that step out.

if you search by username, click the button that will sort by posts and not by topics.
Then you can just click on their name to go to their profile.

Also the who is online is not accurate as its only refreshed every 15 mins

#edit: i see its been changed to 30 mins instead of 15, which kind of makes it redundant
