But.. what if they delay, only to announce it on April... 23rd? Or 24th? Or maybe in May? ;)

I think it is important to meditate and visualize the 5D Mk II coming in August. Take some deep breaths, visualize....

If nothing happens on April 22-24 then go to your happy place (August, 15 Mp, weather sealed, low, low noise at ISO 6400, etc), and try not to be a girly-man

So someone pulled a date out of thin air?

What bothers me is that there's "another" rumour going 'round that after the 5D MKII comes out this year, whatever date it may be, that a 3D will come out next year. That to me says that the new 5D won't be weather sealed.

For the rumour, go to http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5d2_3d_7d.html

I guess the important thing here to remember is that its not the camera that makes the photographer, its their eye and skills etc. Sure we all want a new 5D but do we really need one? I'm using a 30D. The main limitations I have found with this are as follows:
- no wide angle except with ridiculous EF-S lenses.
- too noisy at 800 and virtually unusable thereafter.
- not weather sealed

The above are not major roadblocks and could be overcome easily enough. The only other drawback I can think of is that the technology development of digital cameras is quite fast, so a camera from May 2006 will be showing its age soon enough. A friend of mine with a studio in Boston still uses a Canon 10D (!) and the quality of his work is terrific.

Well, "luckily" because Canon's EF wide angles aren't super brilliant the EF-S 10-22 or even Sigma 10-20 work pretty well for wide angle on the 1.6 crop compared to the 17-40 or 16-35. Also, the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS is pretty awesome.

My main reason for lurking on the 5D Mk II is to have more useful focal lengths on some amazing primes (50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.2, 135 f/2). I don't get as much use from them as I would like on the crop body.

It will be interesting to see how Canon keeps the noise down on the 5D Mk II as they up the pixel density. The original 5D seems to be pretty magical with low noise, but they have had 3 years to work on it. They have to go to at least ISO 6400 to keep up with Nikon.

I think Canon will go for more weather sealing thanks to competition from Nikon and Pentax. It can't be that hard!

From the recent interview published from the head of the EOS division it's not clear if Canon are going to release the 5D Mk II followed by a lower end full frame model in 2009, or if they are going to add one above (e.g. 3D), or maybe both.

That shouldn't be a problem. The 1d-III compares VERY well with the 5d on noise, especially at high-ISO's. I think 16mp FF works out to the same density as the 1d-III. On top of that, its a year later so there's hope it'll be even better.

My main reason for monitoring this 5d-II insanity is IQ. I'm spoiled by the noise(lack of) and color rendition of my 1d-III, but want it in a smaller body. The current 5d will cover the IQ, but I'm also hooked on the 1d features. Knowing my skill level doesn't do my current gear justice, I fully acknowledge the 5d-II is a want, and not a need. But that doesn't keep me from eagerly watching all the rumors. :)

I don't disagree that those lenses are good, its just the general way the whole crop thing works out as a physical limitation with wide angle and the way those EF-S lenses only work with certain bodies - I know, I know, I'm flogging a dead horse..

Well, since the 5DMkII isn't coming out this week, I'm going to spend part of the money I was saving for it on a gun! I doubt that I'll ever get the MkII now as I will spend the money before August. Oh well!

I was going nuts about this a couple of months ago. Then I bought a 5D and I couldn't care less any more. If I'd had any reason to expect the 5D Mk2 in April I might have considered waiting, but I don;t think it'll be out before August at the earliest.

CDS, how many thread do we have now about this? I have been amazed how many people are looking for the new 5D. The current one is amazing and Canon just can't get a better one. That's the simple answer and it'll come out when it comes out. If Nikon can't shame Canon into getting it out sooner, there has to be a production issue.

A-men... I got my 5D saturday and a used XT last night, and I now could not care less when Canon replaces anything in their lineup. I am good for a while! :D

Besides, after using the 5D and toying with neatimage with it and such, I have tested pushing up to ISO6400 (underexpose 2/3 stop and boost from ACR) with and without NR. The results are very good, IMHO. ISO3200 (actually sensitivity is equal to ISO4000 on the 5D/20D/30D) is already very clean, and I have tested under-exposing and pushing 2-2/3 stop past it (equiv. ISO25600) with pretty decent PP'ed results. The main reason I was looking at a new 5D was the hope for lower noise at higher ISO, but now I'm not worried.
