What is the best LCD protector or LCD hood, to protect it from scratches. I a want to make sure and NOT leave ANY residue and it has to be easy to take it off. I would like a hood if possible.
I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel

Some people here despise putting anything on the LCD for various reasons. Personally, I use high-quality PDA protective films on my LCD on my 10D. I used it on my old DRebel too. It suits my needs.

Well, I found a "hood" where you don't actually put it on the screen..
It looks like this:

I want to know if it's safe too. There is already one small scratch and I don't want it to happen again.

Use a PDA protector and cut them out to the proper sizes.
I don't use them, but I think I will start, most of my equipment is starting to take a beating.

Can that pda film be removed if ever desired?

The PDA film cut to fit works well...Sure, it degrades the quality a bit, but it doesn't bother me. I rely more on the histogram anyway, which is perfectly visable through the PDA film.

DSZE...
Does the protector peel off easily whith not residue? How bad does it degerade it?
I actually never use the LCD screen anyway. I don't even know how to read a histogram yet. :)

Yeah, it just pulls off. Theres no residue or sticky stuff at all. Again, some people really hate putting anything on the LCD panel as it does degrade the image quality a little, but I prefer to view my images in detail on my PC anyway! Uh oh.....here comes a battle.... RFM where are you? :) ...just kidding.

where do you get this film from?
JasonMX
24th of November 2004 (Wed), 16:09
Well, if I really need to I can pull off the protector and put it back on later. Is it that easy to do?
Also, where can I pick up what you use? Do I need a certain brand?
If the screen does get scratched very severely (from the camera falling or something) can Canon repair it?
BTW, Mr Photoguy you have some nice night shots in your album. I like the bridges.

BTW, I live in Princeton NJ about 30 min from NY city. I am up there all of the time. The South Street Sea Port is a fun place. I need to grab my camera (and a small hand gun  ) and go to shoot Central Park, Empire State Building, and China Town.

yeah you may want that or a billy bat or something for central park. I don't trust that place. South street seaport is cool, noone will mess with you there.
I would hate to have to use my zoom to beat someone ... But people usually won't bother you and may actually ask you to take a photo of them and email it to them ... especially by the port..
bring your tripod if it's at night.

You can buy the PDA stuff just about anywhere, BestBuy, Walmart...I don't know that the brand matters too much, but I know that there are at least two types...one type is very thin and flexible and the other type if much stiffer and more like a piece of plastic. The first type is more like a thick piece of Glad-Wrap! :) The Glad-Wrap one is the kind you want. Just take your time cutting it to fit exactly. ...and yes, it can be pulled off if you REALLY need to see your image with crystal clarity and then put back on later. Oh, and if the LCD panel does get scratched Canon does sell a replacement for like $10 or something. ...but I don't want to pop off that LCD panel and pop a new one in, especially when the film can be replaced so easily.

"A brand new cover from Canon is $10."
Wow, didn't know it was that cheap. Is the one one the Digital Rebel that easy to replace?
http://www.dcviews.com/reviews/Canon-300D/cn_300db.jpg
This is the one with the exposed LCD screen. Can you replace these too?
dsze
24th of November 2004 (Wed), 16:32
No, that LCD is not exposed. That is a plastic cover over the actual LCD. Yes, I believe those can be replace for about $10. But take a look at it, would you really want to pop it off and put a new one on? I don't know, maybe I'm wrong and replacing it really isn't that difficult at all. Has anyone actually ever replaced the LCD plastic with one of the $10 items from Canon?

I did a pal's 10D LCD cover. It took 5 minutes. The new cover (part code: CB3-0887-000) is $10 and the old one is removed with nothing more complicated than a sucker. A lot easier than the photographic jobs he usually gives me to do for him.

In here the PDA covers costs around 20 bucks each
I'd rather use it and then change the cover after a year or two... or the whole camera :?
I don't understand caring for your equipment THAT much. You bought it, it's gonna serve you 3-4 years max. I can't imagine the cover getting scratched THAT much, even if you're shooting a lot.
Leave an ugly corpse of a camera, don't abuse it... but if you're shooting stop caring about abrasions on the camera body as though it were the lenses.

How does the cover hold in there? From what I remember at looking at pics of painted rebels... it's just glued in place with some kind of double sided adhesive tape. Right?
Where can you get a suction cup? :)

I just ordered a set for my 300D from http://www.purplemoo.com/pc_viewItem.asp?idProduct=185
They came recommended by someone from another forum so hopefully they do the job.

I had the purplemoo for the G3.
It worked quite nice actually.
There was slight image degradation, but not too bad.

I have to ask though, what is a sucker?
That would be the person who pays 50$ to have it done at an authorized Canon repair center (sorry, couldn't resist  )

The thing I've found to work really well is a piece I bought from either Hoodman or some other vendor (wish like crap I could remember, cause I'd like to have another one) thats made of aluminum, painted black, with a rubber eyepiece attached that has a 2X diopter inside. Its really great for looking at the shot you just took, and the 2X diopter magnifys it enough to really see what you captured.
I first had it on my Canon G3's LCD, where I cut thin strips of the soft fuzzy side of velcro...then applied them on all perimeters of the LCD (the sticky never hurts the camera in any way, and is easy to clean off should you later wish to remove it ) and then applied the sticker side of the velcro to the edges of the viewer. Then I could just stick the viewer on with it completely covering my LCD, magnifying my shots with great precision. Obviously, no sunlight bothers your view either, so it really works well.
Any interest, let me know and I'll post a photo of it, and try to remember where I bought the thing............Later, Mackroe

Why go through the hassle and cost to find ways to cover that plastic window? Just order a new LCD cover from Canon and stash it away. Then, if you ever need to replace it, you will have a $10-15 piece waiting for you. I used to use the PDA covers too but now that the parts numbers and 800 number is known, it seems simpler to just order a back up LCD cover and hold onto it, then mess with PDA covers or the other more frankensteinian looking items.
That is my take anyway, coming from the days that I had a Hoodman, used PDA covers, etc. Now I get the full view of the LCD, and just wipe when it gets dirty. I can see the argument in ease and minimal cost in PDA covers if you already have them laying around, but most of the other options seem to be money better spent on lenses.
Here is what can be tried if you still want to go the route of a PDA-like cover, designed for MP3 video players, etc. So if you have an Ipod or multimedia player, you can buy this and have enough to do several items, including your camera. Works well, I have it on my Sansa 8gb, came with the Kroo case. Very clear, once applied you cannot see it.
