I just got an SD870. As usual for these things, the camera capabilities are far more sophisticated than the poorly written manual. One of the things that I can't figure out is setting the white balance for use with flash when the camera is in manual mode. On my old Canon Powershot camera, the choices for setting white balance (daylight, cloudy, tungsten, etc.) included flash as a choice. This does not exist on the SD870. Am I to assume that when the flash is fired, the camera automatically sets the white balance for flash (or do you have to have the white balance set for automatic white balance (AWB)?

I would set the camera to AWB in that case. It's not really addressed in the manual. The only other option I'd consider would be to set a custom white balance, but that will be problematic if you move out of flash range.

Thank you Jon. I just checked it out by photographing a white piece of paper under differerent lighting conditions and various white balance settings. It turns out that no matter how you have the white balance set, taking a photo with flash automatically corrects the white balance properly for flash.
