Nope, was mounted to the roof.

Thats impressive if you PP'd the pole out and it was running over the bay area, will you be posting a before shot?

9 images into one, was that to get correct exposure on areas or to help remove the rig?

The rig wasn't covering the engine bay, rather the roof and a lot of the background, The different exposures are for the car, background, engine, lights, interior and other bits and pieces to get the final image.

I've posted my rig several times in previous post in this thread if you want to see what it looks like.

Hello guys, I've been viewing the thread since just before christmas, for some reason the manfrotto suctions cups are a horror to source in the UK - I waited... 7 weeks for mine to come through from Italy. But anyway the wait was worth it and I can't wait to get some practice in on the rig :D
Just wanted to say thanks for the advice - mucho appreciated.

This is my first post on this forum, i find this site to be great for all sorts of information/discussions and i'm not actually a Canon user (sorry) This has to be the best sourse of information on the net regarding automotive rigs that i've seen.
From what i've learned in this thread here is some of the equipment i've gained so far:
Equipment:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3594/3384273893_a582c5ea0d.jpg
Avenger f1000 suction cups. Ordered from Adorama New York. Arrived in less than 4days from point of ordering, very impressed. Did get stung with import duty and have since found somewhere that sells them in the UK, although the day i ordered i was damned if i could!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3433/3385090688_8ed9dec4dc.jpg
Manfrotto 035 super clamps.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3617/3384280161_87f6e3efa9.jpg
Manfrotto Variable friction arm with quick release plate, much like a magic arm really.

Like anything they can be made cheaper but i've tried to take in all the info i've got from when i started looking with a hope to 'do it once, do it right'. It's going to have cost me alot (over Ģ300) but it's not just a toy to me.

If i get chance today i'll be picking up the pole's but i need to take sections of them to a lathe before i can mount it all up. I'm going with 4x 4ft sections 2" 10swg, and 3x 1ft sections 1.75" 10swg. Exactly as someone else on here has done.

thanks for looking,
Matt.

Ads, it was bought from warehouse express. Personally i couldn't find it cheaper, only the same price. About Ģ100 with postage.

DonNguyen

muska, better to do it right the first time, otherwise, you simply end up spending more money on it.

Hi Matt, where you getting your poles from?

Are they special order or having them made?

Muska
25th of March 2009 (Wed), 18:00
I haven't had them custom made, there is a place in an industrial estate near me called Metal Supermarket (bayton road bedworth if anyone wants to try mail order) they advised taking the 1ft sections to a lathe to get it all to slot together. For all sections I'm looking at Ģ87.
I've looked to replicate someone elses design that is a few pages back.

Hope that helps.

Kryptix,
In the UK the avengers can be bought from:

http://www.karlu.com/product_info.php?cPath=41_42_698&products_id=9440

I bought from adorama, not much in it with postage added and mine came from New york in 4days from ordering.
The suction cups come with a baby swivel pin for adjustment.
If you go back one page i've posted a picture of teh Manfrotto magic arm, i bought mine from warehouse express in the UK.

It's not 100% done yet so I haven't gone out and shot with it yet but I put it on my car this afternoon to see what it'll look like (only did this position, none of the rear yet). The rig is only like 13' long at this point but I'll write this model off as a starter:

Hopefully I'll be shooting with it for the first time this weekend! And considering how big the car is, I'm pretty satisfied with how much it gets in the frame, haha.

Great set ups guys.

I was wondering if anyone has advice about mounting a camera to a dirt bike?

PJH
27th of March 2009 (Fri), 17:19
that's going to be hard. Suction cups probably won't work since the plastic is curved and full of decals. So air will go out . If you can, try fastening your tube to the chassis of the bike itself. also consider where you are going to drive. Vibration offroad is a real issue for shots like these.

anyways: can someone post some picture's of how they connect their suctioncup to their pole? Or explain in words what i should look for when buying equipment (so that it all fits).

excuse me for my bad english.

Bumgardnern

The best way to connect the poles to the suction cups is via superclamps.

when I placing the suction cup on the car, I spray water on the suction cup so it would come off easy and have a better suction to the panel. Thats my 2 cent.....

Yah, it can be hard to get a good grip on them at times.. Overall, the tabs work well for me.

I sanded the inner coupler pipe a little bit.. but just to make it smooth.. some of them were notch-er than I would like.

for the moment and for a noob like me thatīs the only location i have to take this photos. No traffic, no police (i must have a front licence plate here in Portugal ) and the road is leaning so no pushing the car also :lol:

PJH
29th of March 2009 (Sun), 09:05
i think the location is not too bad. Sure beats all the "going in circles blur" kind of pics we get here. So did you build your rig yourself? What kind of a distance are we talking here? how much did it cost, what parts are you using? Can we have some picture's of your rig? Detail shots etc. Can we see an original image, maybe even in high res to be able to see the vibrations (if any)?

also what kind of exposure did you use? I'm guessing F11-ish, seeing the star shape of the lights. And about 5 seconds of exposure in total?

edit: also a question for everyone. Who here make's pictures like these with the camera actually above the roofline of the car, and using suction cups? could someone explain (preferred with pictures) how they put there pole in an angle like that? i'm guessing you'd have to make an L shape or be able to add a joint in your pipe, so that it can be raised. But isn't that putting alot of stress on the suction cup (and body panel) on the far end?

wochi

letīs see if a can anwser all that in english

- a friend of mine that works with this materials built it, so i canīt answer to techical questions or costs of the rig
- the rig is very similar to automotiverigs.com only the pole seems larger in mine. I have 3 sections of 1,5meters( convert to inches :) )

so you have 4,5 meters of working distance. That's about 14.5 feet. That's rather long considering everyone here is around 12 feet. The picture looks great, can't really spot alot of vibration, that's very good considering it's a 13second exposure. I'm really impressed. I'm going to start working on my rig next week, hope I can get it as good as yours.

Are you using a Manfrotto magic arm to connect the camera to the pole? Or is this also custom made by your friend?

Easiest way would be the set up a flash and roll past it, though you would want to avoid shots that include the wheels because it will usually freeze the spokes.

Though I don't see flash used in that shot....

Hey guys. This is my first post on this forum, and I'll be honest im not a canon shooter, regardless this thread brought me here and I've studied it extensively. There is sooooo much info for anyone looking to build a rig. The set up I went with was 2 avenger 1000 cups, bogen super clamps and a 10' 2" in diameter ETM pole, its very sturdy. Last night I got a chance to do a few test shots on a friends Evo. I must say cropping that rig out is MUCH more labor intensive that I had imagined, either way I look forward to getting more shots in the future and I owe it all to the info here, thanks again.

How much adjustability do your ones offer? I'm thinking of getting the Manfrotto Magic Arm but attaching the pole to two glass carries. Do you think it'd be OK? I can't see how the adjustable ones can be 'adjustable' when there's two of them in a line!

Care to show any pics?

Hello all, I had another chance to grab some shots... mixed results really. I'm considering some modifications to the rig - mainly a suspension bridge style (using a steel wire to brace the ends of the rig) which I'm hoping to increase the rigidity.
Here's the set, if anyone has any tips or comments then I'm all ears and ready to hear them :) I can put up the shot including the rig as well if wanted

thanks!

Hi Ads, were you able to get all the parts in the UK? any chance of a shot with the rig.

Hi Rory, Yep everything was sourced from UK vendors dude.
Karlu.co.uk for much of the kit

2x Pump Cups http://www.karlu.com/product_info.php?cPath=41_42_698&products_id=9440
3x Super Clamps http://www.karlu.com/product_info.php?products_id=3934
4x 5ft aluminium section from this seller http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/dongo1950
realistically because of the flex, you'll only need 2 of the sections but 3 sections can be done as well, but you've got to be MEGA steady though i.e. don't run the engine at all (see how blurred the last pic is).
you'll need a ballhead, I got one from Jessops for Ģ10
and you'll need a spigot which looks like the top of the suction cup. That connects the ball head to the superclamp.
And that's everything to get you going i think!

Here's the originals...

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i52/adsayer/CRW_1514.jpg

hope that helps!

john owen

It will stick, might have problems with the foot of the pad if it goes between the paint and the vinyl

The surface may feel the same bu they are very different, you can buff a mark out of paint, unless the vinyl has a clear coat over the top it will react differently

I would'nt do it, but if you need to then get yourself some vinyl from a sign maker and stick it on your car to see what happens. It will peel off after with a bit of help from a hair dryer or other heat source.

Well, the entire car is (or will be) covered in vinyl. I guess that still leaves me the option of mounting a rig to the sunroof :)

saturnin
7th of April 2009 (Tue), 10:57
i woulndt use or take chances of the suction cups on vinyl man, and the sunroof doesnt have enough space to evenly distribute the weight of the poles, plus sunroofs arent bulletproof. I once atached one suction to a sunroof on a car and the roof was tweakin... not a good idea. Id say if u hae to shoot a car thats coverd in vinyl, just shoot from another vehicle...if it is a paid gig for you, do that, its much easier and safer for both the vinyl and your camera etc

saturin do you have a link to your setup?

saturnin
7th of April 2009 (Tue), 13:06
i dont have a link but its same as everyones..lol.. i took my idea from automotiverigs.com and i built my own with a few differences, its still a work in progress as i'm finding new adjustments and such for each set up as each car is differnt. It would be too easy to just have one that works on every car(well suction cups do). I'm lucky enough to have friend who's a fabricator so he helps with certain things.
I was skeptical about the pinch rail setup that automotive rigs has...but it does work very well, even under the load of a 1ds and a lense, 13 feet pole..lol.. its heavy but it hold like glue.

Cars with the frame rust coating dont work with magnets of course, especially under my cameras load the magnets give out. On a regualr metal frame with no coating, it holds very well as well.

Suction cups, last resort, i just hate to photoshop that stuff out cuz i never feel that it looks right, even tho other ppl cant tell, i can and it bugs the crap outta me.
