Do all of you use aluminum for your pole? I saw someone use an ETM steel pole...ETM pole I can get easily at any big hardware store. For aluminum 2" tubing, I will have to do more searching for it. any recommendations would be really appreciated! :)

Finally finished building mine, but my Manfrotto Magic Arm hasn't arrived yet so I can't test it out. It's very bouncy when it's just the pole, is this normal? I can 'ping' the bar down and it'll continue wobbling for ages! I'm hoping the magic arm's weight will make it more solid, but we'll see. Looking at various pics of the 'rigs' on here, they have a lot more flex in the pole than mine so I assume I'll be OK.
I'll get my pics up in a bit...

Here's the rig attached to the car:
http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt47/kryptix/6181c4fc.jpg
The pole is 3m long, this is being cut at 2m so I have 2m pole and a 1m pole:
http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt47/kryptix/84216f25.jpg
This is at 10mm near the end of the pole. I'll be able to go further back if needed:
http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt47/kryptix/66990a0d.jpg
As you an see in the background, we have another two poles that are 1m each. This means we can adjust it on-the-go it to 1m long, 2m long or 3m long. We kept the 2m pole so we can extend to 3m long with only one join to keep it stiff:
http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt47/kryptix/3a85a4d0.jpg
The suction mounts an also be adjusted on-the-go, and hold perfectly:

Ohhh, that was just a practise shot. You worded that wrong! I thought you meant I was supposed to turn the camera upside down for some reason!
But yeah, I'll have the camera positioned under the 'rig' using the Magic Arm. :)

sorry guys, been trolling this thread ALOT while i was constructing my rig, and never posted on POTN before. but here was my first attempt

final:

rig includes:
(x2) filmtools 6" suction cups
(x3) Manfrotto super clamps
Manfrotto magic arm
(x2) 3/8-to-1/4 adapter studs (found at vistek, was a HUGE problem at first, because i didn't think of the difference in the size of the stud on the suction cups that needed to be screwed into the super clamp)
** in the pics, i used my friends pole which includes a 1.5" EMT pipe, (x2) 5-foot sections totalling 10 feet, plumpers coupling to attach. My pole will be very similar, but I'll be using (x3) 4-foot aluminium, 1" OD, and 1/8" wall thickness. I'm just starting to think if 1" OD is large enough. **

Yeah. Tends have a habit of ending up with a big bracket on the body work making it hard to clone out.
I think I need to try out billions of angles to see what I can make.

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions regarding pre-built automotive-rigs to buy.
Can anyone tell me roughly how many companies are making pre-built rigs to sell to the general public? And also, where these companies are located?
I've done a brief Google search but haven't come back with much. I have been to automotiverigs.com, but haven't seen too many more websites.
The other thing is, how much are people usually spending on their rigs? I'm sure their are a few worth a lot, but i'm sure there are also some cheaper alternatives. I'm trying to work out a rough, average price...
If anyone/multiple people could give me some help on this i'd be very appreciative. :)
Cheers.

i built mine for 440cnd, most of the money went to magic arm 100bux, suction cups 90 bux, pipes 100bux, magnets 100bux, clamps 15bux etc
paying a grand for one is not really worth it.. my setup has 3 functions, suction, magnets, rail
look back thorugh this informative thread, it will anser and point u to where u need to go. I realize its much easier to just post @ the end for ppl to chime in, but do the work and u get your answers.

Looks good from what I see. Depending on the lens you are using. Consider a 8 stop ND filter. I am picking one up for the 17-40L and my next rig once it is built. Currently resorting to f/22, ISO50 in daylight. :o

i usally shot with my 5D, this was a test, so my old 350D had to put its neck out =) So max f stop was 22...and minum iso was 100.
Thought i should use the 5D when i got a stable rigg, then i can go down to iso 50. Will be shooting with the sigma 20 mm f1,8 (or is it 2,8?).
But still, an ND filter would be good. Thanks for a nice comment =)

Yup my setup is always the 5D and Sigma 12-24. My current rig doesnt give me much length so just have to throw it back with a UWA.

Im piecing my rig together.
I ordered 4 pieces of 3' long, 2" diameter aluminum tubing from speedy metals, and nobody sells anything to attach them all together. All of the cup links I've found are 2-1/8" emt attachments. Do you think I could get tubing to match the diameter of the inside, drill thru them and hold them together by a screw, bolt and a set of washers?

Hi, guys. I'm new to this forum. I recently read the entire thread and I got Really inspired to practice doing rig shots. I'd like to express my gratitude to all of you who shared all this valuable knowledge.
Here are my first experiments. I'd really appreciate your critique.
When I took this shot, I didn't have any suction cups so I decided to go primitive and tied my Manfrotto 055XB tripod directly to the car. Unfortunately the light was too bright and I could achieve only 1/4" at f22 ISO100. Thanks to the stability of the tripod I was able to drive the car and shoot with a radio remote control. (The car has a diesel engine! :) )

For these two shots I bought some cheap suction cups, similar to those being commented for being unreliable. I'm prone to agree that they are untrustworthy. One of the cups lost suction 3 or 4 times and luckily I was holding the camera's neck strap and stopped it from falling. Still, the car wasn't as clean as it should have been so I'm willing to give the cheap cups a second chance.

Sure, the tripod is a real PITA to clone out but at least I'm pleased with the stability it gives to the camera.

Here's the story on this one. I get the rig all set up, ready to go....... oh crap, where's my remote? ARGGGGG! I seemed to have lost my remote, and the only way could do it was press the shutter, jump in, get it moving, all before the 10 sec timer went off. I don't know if you can change the timer length, but I've never had to know before this. So these aren't as sharp as I would have liked due to the bounce that occurred due to my fat ass jumping in the car. Next time they will be better. I just really like this location due to the double yellow, which in my opinion is the most elusive creature to find without traffic.

I don't know, I thought it was light enough. I use it with good results. I thought about going to speedy metals and getting a different one to compare, but never did. I am going to roll with it, pun intended. What size did you get? If you got 2", it probably is too heavy. I got 1.5" trade diameter, which is 2" OD.

Hey guys, found this thread and thought I'd contribute. I'm using the Avenger F1000 setup, with a magic arm, and super clamps. Using some 1.5" steel piping with compression couplers. Very sturdy - what are you guys using for a boom?

I've been running really long shutters, 20-30 seconds at times. My goal is to start shooting faster shutters, and getting more detail in the background, not just a complete blur.

just found this threat after long time searching throught google, really interesant and could find answer to almost all of my questions. So i decided to sign up :D
I have a little suction cup from Cullmann at the moment, however I just ordered half part of the manfrotto material to start building my real rig.
I have in mind using it in bikes and motorbikes too, as I saw some pictures in the threat but not how they were done, do you have any info about that? i'm still reading on page 70.

don't have many options with my suction mount to get more angles.
they where done with a Canon 30D and a tokina 10-17mm fisheye, I'm afraid you said fisheye don't work pretty good for rigs, should add into my wishlist a wideangle them.

How is everyone's rig doing w/ the EMT pole? IS pvc too light? Steel to heavy? FML i need to finish my damn kitchen remodel so I can start spending some fun $$$ on stupid things like aluminum tubing. I think I priced out 12 or 13 feet of 2" aluminum in 4' sections and 4 1' sections of 1.75 OD piping and it was only $85 or so...not a lot of money, but it's a lot of money when you're behind on bills!

I managed to get them from screwfix i got 2x double suctions and a tripple.

i have used them a couple of times on my bonnet and it hasnt affected the paint, my dad owns a body shop and says they will be fine as there not so strong as to dent it.
i have been using them on my glassroof mostly anyway.
cheers for the heads up tho for other people to make there own decisions.
i will get a better kit once i can afford it, but im a student and made this for a project to see if i would use it as its alot of cash for the decent kit if i wasnt to use it alot.

There's a question that has been bothering me through the entire thread:
How on Earth are you guys transporting your 10' poles? Aren't they too long to fit in your cars?
I'm currently considering buying a 10' 1.6" EMT pole with 1/8" wall thickness and with threaded ends. I intend to cut it in half and join the threaded ends with a coupler. This way I'd be able to transport my future rig easily because it'd be only 5' long.
I'm just not sure if the threaded coupler wouldn't bring too much instability.
So again:
1. How are you transporting your 10' poles?
2. What do you think of having 2 pieces of 5' tubes, joined with a threaded coupler?

1 7/8" OD, 1/8" wall tubing at 13 feet, 2 second exposure (after white balance correction, sorry) Look at the lights in the ceiling...
Awesome comparison! I think I've found some of this AL RMC locally for $31 per 10' section of the 1.5" trade size. How did you get 13' of it, this place locally only has 10' sections which I'm hoping will be enough combined with a 12-24mm lens on my D200's 1.5x crop sensor...

I went and picked up my AL RMC this afternoon. I test fitted my super clamp on the 1.5" trade size pipe (they had the OD listed at 1.9") and the superclamp didn't seem to want to hold it very securely even though the clamp is listed as being designed to hold diameters up to 2.1".
Has anyone else noticed that?
I ended up getting a 10' section of AL RMC 1 1/4" trade size, which had a listed OD of 1.660". It fit the clamp much more comfortably and seemed pretty rigid at the warehouse, but does anyone have any real world experience with how it will do hanging a dSLR at the other end?
Also, one more question - do you think I'll be ok with 10' (that's the only length they had) with a 12-24mm lens on a 1.5x crop sensor or do I need to go ahead and plan on getting another 10' (and then cutting it in half most likely)?
This was $30 bucks, BTW at a local electrical supply warehouse.

It is close to the end of the superclamps range, but I have not had a problem with it yet.

I went from 1" to 1.5", so 1.25" is a mystery to me. Even my 1.5" has some deflection in it when all the gear at the end is on.
Also, one more question - do you think I'll be ok with 10' (that's the only length they had) with a 12-24mm lens on a 1.5x crop sensor or do I need to go ahead and plan on getting another 10' (and then cutting it in half most likely)?
The section thread together, so I bought two sections, and cut them up into smaller pieces.

It is close to the end of the superclamps range, but I have not had a problem with it yet.
I went from 1" to 1.5", so 1.25" is a mystery to me. Even my 1.5" has some deflection in it when all the gear at the end is on.
The section thread together, so I bought two sections, and cut them up into smaller pieces.
Cool, my 12-24mm lens just came in this afternoon and a quick test shot / measure showed that I'll need to be approx 7' away from the DD Blazer for a perpindicular (sp?) side shot, which might be a stretch for the 10' pole, but the 3/4 angle shots look like they'll fit the angle w/ no problem.
I'll see how much 'bend' there is on it tonight....

Yep, the 10' pole fits the Blazer :)
Did another test fit last night, the 10' isn't long enough for me to get the shot that I want, so I'll be picking up another 10' section today and cutting it to 4' and 6'.
I also think I'm at the upper limit of what I'd feel comfortable with fitting in the superclamps, as far as pole width.
Check out these pics, maybe the super clamp holds fine wider than this, but it would make me a little jittery with these on an expensive car...
These pics show the AL RMC 1.25" trade size, it measures to 1.66" OD

I turned around for a split second and my 2 year old was hanging by the pole like a jungle gym!!!
