on a 40D, considering the 1.6 crop factor, that's not very wide. it could work, but you'll need a big distance. I suggest you try it, if you have the gear available. You can always upgrade to a 10-20 of a 10-22 in case it doesn't work out.

I have a question, after looking some of the rig set ups picts seen here and using the parts I already have, is there anything like the manfrotto's superclamp 035 but bigger and still compatible with the magic arm and manfrotto suction cups?

and, which is the exact name of the thing (spigot i think you call in english) needed to connect the pump cup 241 to the superclamp?

thanks!

PD: those lexus picts are amazing!!

did two shots of my friend's IS yesterday, probably the best one i have so far and I kinda like it...

I like the second as well, except for the building line matching up with the roofline. The dark area is a little distracting, and would like it much better if it were the same trees and sky as the rest.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether 17mm will be wide enough for a rig shot or will i need something wider?

You'll need a LONG pole for 17mm to be enough on a crop sensor. Look for one of the 10-22 or other UWA lenses.

I went through the same thing and picked up a 12-24 and it works great with 10' pole for most angles, have to add extension for a few angles though.

The Avenger pump will plug right into a superclamp, no adapter needed.

That's right, all you do is take the avenger, and you stick it into the hole in the superclamp and twist the included tightening screw of the superclamp.

Manfrotto 241 Pump Cup w 5/8

how can I attach to that model a superclamp??

The superclamp usually comes with a spigot anyway, so just plug it in that hole and tighten...

That piece on the 241 either unscrews and removes allowing you to put the superclamp in it's place, or if not then the superclamp comes with an extra spigot that will attach to the top piece in the pic you posted. So you should be good either way.

10' emt, magic arm, f1000, and clamps

one thing i did notice was the shakyness of the pole even though the top of th parking garage was super smooth and flat. and it was hard getting the red line NOT to appear on the cups. even though i did wipe the car surface down.

oh yeah, im waiting for my 11-16 tokina to come in as well

I'd really appreciate some criticism. 10x

This is my rig:

It was remarkably stable vertically, but I got some movement to the sides. I'm thinking of using some rope to stabilize it horizontally.

Very sharp indeed. I believe you have master the rig. I'm guessing 10 ft EMT and with a 10-22 wide angel. What did you use to get the vertical pole to connect to the horizontal pole. Need that for my rig but lost on constructed it.

Thanks. Glad you like my pictures.
I'm using a Sigma 10-20 currently at 10mm. I need to make my pole longer.

In order to connect the vertical pole to the horizontal I used two flat aluminum pieces and a total of three bolts - two for the vertical pole and one for the horizontal one. I'm also using thumb screws so that it's easier to assemble the rig outdoors.

The 10" pole itself is cut in two for easier transportation.

Here it is:
http://www.stefansolakov.com/other/Rig_cable_s.jpg

It's a 4 meters long steel cable, 2mm in diameter. It's seriously rigid.
I connect it to the pole with the help of two simple luster terminals (not sure if I named it correctly). I attach both ends first and then I pull the cable up on top of the vertical pole. The cable gets pretty strained and doesn't allow much vertical movement.

ok, so my piping came in today. 1.5" trade size aluminum conduit, 10ft length. Now obviously the sturdiest way to use it is in a straight 10ft length. It comes with male threaded ends and a female threaded coupler on one end. When the coupler is threaded tight down it seems pretty sturdy on the one end. I'd like the setup to be more portable and fit in my car so I'm debating cutting the pipe in half and having the two threaded ends in the middle. what is everyone else using for couplers? Are people using the threads, or are you using other longer sleeves overtop of the pipe secured somehow?

I'd like to just use this coupler if it will work but I dont know that it is long enough. the threads measure 1 14" on both ends and the coupler is only 2" long. i'd like the coupler to be wound tight to the end of the threads for stability.

Mine is a three piece, and I use the threads and they work great. What I did was take a stick, cut it in half, and threaded the ends. I had a second piece that I cut three feet off, and use the other 7 feet for when I need some extra reach, but very rarely. A plumber or electrical contractor may have the tools to thread, or you can try to bring it to home depot, but not sure how they feel about threading something they don't sell.

T-Rex Rig shoot. : ) The PS effect isn't really my style. However it fit the theme of the shoot IMO. When you see it in real life it plays that fantasy aspect quite a bit, so it works in this aspect as far as Im concerned.

StreamlineGT how long is the coupler you are using? I can only find 2" long couplers. The pipe already came threaded on both ends but the coupler is only super snug if its threaded tight to the ends of the threads otherwise its a little loose. Problem is the threaded sections are 1 1/4" each and the coupler only 2".

Soooo, I'm wondering about maybe having the coupler aluminum welded to one pipe about a 1/2" up the threads.

10lbs isnt much for a 10ft pipe. 1 1.4" trade size steel EMT is over 20lbs.

Most people are prefering 1 1/2" trade size aluminum rigi conduit. Go to an electrical supply store.

Your right about them having the pipe threading machines but for some reason, i was told they cannot thread the EMT pipe, i'm going to go up there and ask in person and see if that helps. doubt it tho...

also, are there any off brand versions of the magic arm or any articulating arm in general? or does manfrotto have the market cornered as i suspected.

it's pretty thin walled, so you can get like 1.5" to work, but only 10'. it isn't the best for this type of setup, especially if you are lookng to go loinger than 10'.

When you shoot other peoples car like these (Expensive cars) are you every worry that something bad might happen to the car, like scratches or dents. Also is the suction on the body of the hood and trunk or the glass window...

StE823
11th of June 2009 (Thu), 20:25
^ really? i never knew it can cause any damage to the paint or dent the car!!!?????!!

anyways just kidding, well first thing i would is aim for sunroofs and windshields... also if you mount it on the body panel just make sure if that part is strong enough... knock around the panel and pushing it down see if it can support a 15 feet pole...

and i did quite a few shots on my car before i do it on other people's car... lastly im very close with a body shop and a dent guy, if ****s happen i'll just sent it over to them *of course i would pay the labour for sure if it really happen.. lol*

but given if i can't find any sunroof or hood/bonnet to mount on, i can still mount it on the front windshield and one of the side window...

just like this EvoX, it was mounted on the front windshield and the driver's side window..

Looks like my Avenger cups, Super Clamps and Magic arm will be in TOMORROW! Hooray for B&H!

While I was at Home Depot today, 1" EMT looked fairly rigid and was fairly light. 1.25" EMT, while more rigid, was substantially heavier. They were out of 1.5", and 2" was just too heavy. I think Ill buy both the 1" and 1.25" and see which works for me. I almost picked them up today but didnt since I didnt know that my hardware would be in tomorrow

justincase724

Your right about them having the pipe threading machines but for some reason, i was told they cannot thread the EMT pipe, i'm going to go up there and ask in person and see if that helps. doubt it tho...

Their threaders are for rigid conduit. EMT is too thin-walled to thread. If you want to make it longer, I think 1" EMT slides right in 1 1/4" EMT (or something along those lines). Stick a 12" piece of 1" in between two pieces of 1 1/4", drill a couple holes, bolt it all together. Probably going to be way heavy though.

For aluminum tubing, you can find some here (http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=947&step=2&top_cat=60). It's quite expensive though.

Called the local electrical supply and they have AL Conduit. $35/10 foot for 1.5", $28/10 foot for 1.25". Ill be heading down there once my hardware comes in to pick up a stick of 1.5". I will also see if the 1.25" will slide snugly inside the 1.5", and if it does I will pick up half a stick of that, also.

Talked to my local aluminum welder ( close buddy ) who apparenty moved shops and no longer has aluminum welding materials. (background for those not following) I got my Aluminum conduit in, threaded on the ends but only tight when the coupler is threaded right to the end of the threads, prob being the threads are 1 1/4" long each and coupler is only 2" long. my plan was to weld the coupler on one end a 1/2" out. He suggests just cutting a 1/4" off the end of each threads.

Do you think this will still have enough support to hang a camera off?

Can anyone using the threads to put their pipes together tell me how long their couplers are, or what you are connecting with?

StreamlineGT

My rig is ready to rock!

I might in the future buy another stick of the tubing I have and cut it to 3.5/6.5' so I have further extension. That is, after I see what kind of coverage I can get with the 10-20 once it comes in.

While most people are having issues with their boom bending under weight, Im having issues with the sheetmetal on my Subie bending.

Oh yeah. Whoever asked if 1.5" Rigid Aluminum Conduit is too big for a Super Clamp, its not. Barely. It holds solid, but Im not sure itll hold anything much larger. I wanted to wrap my entire pole in black hockey tape to prevent glare/reflections and to help with scratching if I do hit the car with it, but Im not too sure about it now.

When I was on the roof I had to put one of the cups in the middle of the roof and 1 at the near edge in order to get the extension I needed.

I think thatll be rectified by buying another stick of conduit and when my 10-20 comes in

Is there anything that can in-between the suction cup and the super clamp to sort of 'lengthen' the gap or put it at an angle? That way I can put one lower, one higher and have the camera high in the air and so on. I'd also like to be able to swivel it either side so I can stick it to the windscreen.

Where can you get the Avenger F1000's in the UK? ...or at least, where will ship to the UK for a non-rip off price?

beautiful.

here's another attempt taken just a little while ago... i can't seem to get the front or rear of the car in focus (depending on the angle I'm shooting at)... any tips? I need to shoot during the day though :( I'm waiting for my aluminum tubing to come in so I'm using a steel tent pole for the boom at the moment

I know most of you seem to use the Manfrotto 037 Superclamps, right?

Well a local guy on Craigslist has like 10+ Manfrotto 035 Superclamps for sale really cheap. I already talked to him and I can get three of them for $30, which is the price of one normally. Is there a big difference between the 035 and 037? I want to make sure before I buy them, because I looked at pictures of them and can't see how they're different. Thanks!

the shots were taken with a sigma 10-20mm with a cpl, between .3-.8 second shutter, 100 iso, between f/4-10 (got dark way too fast), with a dark cloud cover

^those might be the older style.

both the cups i have seems to be leaking oil from the pump. it won't even stick to clean flat glass. i don't know if i can send them back to adorama since it's been 2 weeks and i don't want to send them back to the manufacturer because i don't want to pay the shipping cost  total bs cause i waited over a week for the cups also.

so i just got my 50D a couple weeks ago and just got a 10-22 last friday to upgrade from the 12-24...just tried it out tonight farting around in front of the house, which is very bumpy. but i'm liking what i'm seeing. the 10-22 gives you a lot more on the wide end. seems to be quite a bit sharper than the 12-24 as well. can't wait to go out for a shoot with the new stuff.

these were shot at f/5.6 too so the ass end of the car isn't sharp. normally these would be stopped down quite a bit but i was losing sunlight and wanted to see how 3.2 second shutter speed would do, and it looks good.

^looking good! congrats on the new gear. what's up with the yellow wire? is that your shutter release? were you pushing the car shooting at 3.5 seconds?

one of my evo buddies and a buddy with a r34 gt-r are going to be doing a mini photoshoot this tuesday around the seattle area starting at 6:30pm. you're welcome to come along if you're up for it :)

Mike Bowen

i was driving the car actually i didn't have anyone around to help push lol. so i'm pretty pleaseed with that, should only get better with just pushing and a better surface.

i'll let you know about tuesday, i should be able to make it but it depends on work too...where at exactly?

n1nj4 m0d3
22nd of June 2009 (Mon), 01:26
not exactly sure about the location yet, but i know my buddy wants his gt-r shot at that generic alki location (boat launch).

did you use live view?! also, did you use the continuous self timer? i've been using that instead of a remote and it's been working great for me. takes up to 10 shots at a time :)
