n1nj4: are you using any type of filter (CPL or GND)? if so what are you using? Thanks for the add on flickr BTW.

to anyone... Are there ways to eliminate rig shadow on the grown and if there is one how do i remove it and keep the ground movement? I'm using photoshop CS4 and the clone stamp tool works differently and I seem to get ****ty results with it.

I have been watching this thread for some time now and I have to say that I have been inspired. I decided to make my own rig based on the many recommendations listed.

I would like to share my experience as someone that is new to this.

1) Don't underestimate the stiffness required in the tube. I have used several "pipe" configurations and have found that a 2" OD aluminum tube with 1/8" wall works well up to at least 14'. I have used a 2" OD aluminum tube with 1/16" wall @ 12' and it is on the ragged edge of "good enough" (see the yellow corvette below). The rig starts to oscillate if the stiffness is not high enough. Basically, go as stiff as you can in this area. A good rule of thumb is that, given the same OD and wall thickness, aluminum will be 1/3 the weight but will also be 1/3 the stiffness as steel.

2) Be very cautious as to where you put the suction cups. They may put a slight ripple in the roof of an M3:o(even when mounted in the corners) I am using the Avenger by Manfrotto that everyone is talking about on here. The lesson to learn here is that typically the roof of many sports cars is very thin. I will not make this mistake twice. I have mounted the rig to many hoods with no problems yet. I try to mount to the glass when at all possible.

3) Get the Manfrotto magic arm. It makes your life so much easier when setting up for shots. I am using the 244RC and it works great.

4) Always stay with your camera when it is attached to the rig. I never leave mine. I have already had a close call when one of the suction cups released unexpectedly. Fortunately, I grabbed the camera and the rig before any harm was done.

Here are some examples of some of the shots I have taken.

i usually use a tiffen cpl. i'm in the market for a nd filter in case i need to do a shoot during those very bright days. it's always nice to have more friends on flickr :)

just so you know... those shots make me hate you ;) hehehe

I can't use my the CPL that I have now since it doesn't fit my 16-35L (I used to own a 17-40L)

Thanks, I need to get a 82mm GND 0.6 but don't know where to get a good quality one.

please please please DO NOT use the 16-35L. that lens is way too expensive to be messing around with. get a cheaper lens like the sigma (that's what i've been using for the past few rig shoots). it's a $500 lens compared to a $1,400 lens. plus the 10mm is a lot better at taking rig shots than at 16mm. i've actually stacked 2 cpls together and the results turned out pretty good.

I'm on full frame (5d/5dmkii) so I can't use the 10mm lenses due to my mirror hitting it. I'd love to use a cheaper lens but unfortunately I don't have the budget to have another lens at the moment. Thanks for your concern though. I do follow the rig while the camera is mounted on it though.

Thanks DonJuanMair, I'm looking at this one since it's a GND rather than a ND filter: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart_accessories&A=details&Q=&sku=10461&is=REG

Otherwise, I'll get this ND filter: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/8019-REG/B_W_65072921_82mm_102_Neutral_Density.html

I may look into the sigma 12-24mm (much later)

why would you want a gnd for a rig shot? im confused.

If iNfEk puts the 16-35 on his camera id be hoping he would insure it prior.

Attn: ninj4 and anyone else who has recently purchased F1000 cups and had problems. As you may have read, I had been waiting weeks for my cups to arrive and when they finally did, one was defective. The sales staff at my local camera shop contacted the distributer directly who brought up a replacement to do a direct exchange for me. When the rep was there he told the sales guy that he believes there may have been a bad batch of cups that got out. So, for those of you having probs perhaps look into a warranty exchange.

what this does mean though is I have my rig finally.... Wahoo, time to shoot.

I really want to make one and do this. What are my options as far as PP and editing out the arm?

Clone Stamp?
Take 2nd shot and layer?

Good DIY link for intro/first time rig shot to edit it out?

i came close a couple of times, but that's from user error. suction cups never failed on me in my 20+ times of doing rig photo shoots. one of those times is when a friend didn't know how rig shots were done (i thought he knew), so when i said "go" he guns the car going +30mph with my camera attached. another time was trying to mount the rig on a motorcycle. turns out the weight of the rig throws off the balance of the bike when mounted on the handle bars. luckily only the flash shoe was scratched up and the bike didn't drop :) those are reasons why i'm sticking with an xsi for rig shots instead of a more expensive camera/lens.

not exactly sure about the location yet, but i know my buddy wants his gt-r shot at that generic alki location (boat launch).

did you use live view?! also, did you use the continuous self timer? i've been using that instead of a remote and it's been working great for me. takes up to 10 shots at a time :)
How did you use the continuous self timer? I shot with a 40d and it only has a 2 sec or 10 timer but no continuous. I also google it too but just curious. Use a camera trick or the Timer Remote Controller Canon TC-80N3. Thanks

DisrupTer911
26th of June 2009 (Fri), 15:45
you could use the regular remote cable too, just activate the shutter, sldie the switch up and look the cable around the rig itself to keep it off hte ground.
or better yet, have it zip tied in place and just activate it so you don't have to worry at all

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not but I'm going to ask it anyway since I don't recall seeing this being asked through the now 162 pages in this thread...

when focusing on the car are you using the center focus spot or are you using the auto selected focus spot?

I can't seem to get the far end of a car in focus (to my liking anyway... LOL). I'm waiting on my ND and GND filters to come in so I won't be shooting through those till they do :(

StE823: are you roof mounting your shots? I like the angles you get.

StreamlineGT
27th of June 2009 (Sat), 19:05
If you are using a high Fstop, it's not the focus. It's the distance from the camera vs. pole bounce you are dealing with. I get that all the time too. I found bringing a whole bunch of meatheads to push, while I walk next to the camera holding the end of the pole works well to remedy this. Less fatiguing also.. :D

Started my rig today.
Went to home depot an bought:
6-12' extension pole (aluminum), U-clamps, and Wing-nuts.
I also ordered a ball mount to go on the bottom screw so I can pan and tilt it.

the car is at a slow roll as I'm letting off the clutch. I don't have my ND or GND yet so it sucked getting a slow enough shutter speed to show motion. I had to lower the ISO to 50 since 100 was giving me 1/25 at f22

Mahalo for the info, stay full frame and get a 17-40 with your older 5D if you want a cheaper set up at the end of your pole. I had a Sigma 10-20 and Canon 10-22; 5D with 17-40 is MUCH better.
I had a 17-40 but sold it to buy the 16-35 MKII that I own now.

Yep, it was just a suggestion vs. buying another body and 10-22 combo, which would be more $$ than a 17-40.

When my cups come in, i'd like to check out your rig and you can check out the powr-grip cups too.

I'm not sure about the others but the fireworks looks cool in the shot since it's not something you see all the time but those white bands (fencing?) is pretty distracting nice shot though.

if you don't mind what's the exif on this one?
yeah i thought about getting rid of the white fence but for some reason i left it, i might go back and stamp it out.

i dont know why the EXIF isnt there

i would mount the rig on top of the roof and ride the clutch. pushing is too much effort
i rather spend abit more effort pushing, that means less effort for PP
extra effort might cost me 30 minutes but the outcome last forever

can you explain why it would take longer to edit a rig shot that's been driven vs pushed? it takes me around 10-20 mins to edit a pic and i don't see any difference between editing out a rig that's pushed vs driven...

depends where i mount the rig, but i prefer mount on the hood for more distance (more distance = more space for compostion), also driven i need to shoot more and choose the best one.. push i just need to take two pictures.

Not sure how can you ride on a clutch with no vibration for few seconds.

I forgot to adjust the focus on this shot... I thought it was on AF but it was on MF so it's not the best.

Also for this type of shooting should I use the IS or not... It was off for this shot.

Equipment used was 30D and 17-85IS at 17mm

So i'm looking for some C&C...
1. It was taken on a bumpy gravel driveway...
2. You forgot to adjust the focus on this shot...
MF should have been used. What makes you think that the camera to car distance was going to change?
3. Also for this type of shooting should I use the IS or not... It was off for this shot. Here's an idea. Try it both ways, in both modes, & see what works best.
4. Find a better background.

I currently own a tokina fisheye for close action sports phtography and I'm pretty happy with it, so I need a wide angle and my main option is the tokina 12-24mm II, but I see people preffer the tokina 11-16mm. or other options in the same price range.

is the one not getting enough suction on a clean flat surface? try them both on your windshield and see if they will stick.

I thought I had a problem with one, but my hood is ever so slightly curved at the edges and i have to push hard on the whole thing to get it to build pressure and hold

irlan85

allright, well I know the wide angle will distort, but I wonder if the 11-16mm would be extremely distort. Maybe thinking in upgrading in the future with soem FF the 12-24mm is a better option.

And then the rig was built. Took a look at the kit from automotive rigs and simplyfied it a bit.

Didn't bother with cloning out the rig as some of you might be interested in the setup.

2" alu piping underneath car with home made pinc weld clamps. 1 1/2" alu piping from there and out. the black piece is the centre column of my manfrotto tripod secured with some hose clamps.

The wires are there for extra support which i need as it isn't the most sturdy setup
Still, test pic came out ok even though it is taken at 3.2 sec exposure on uneven gravel. ( i know there should be more movement in the picture but it was mostly taken to show of the rig :) )
