Clearly did not read the entire thread then yet :P
There are WAY too many options for someone to tell you how much it would cost. That's like asking "how much would it cost me to buy a lens?"

This is my first attempt at a rig shot. I know the composition, exposure and lack of environment doesn't show motion very well but I basically wanted to see how sturdy my set up was.

I'm using 3 super clamps, 2 f1000 suction cups, 1 magic arm with bracket, and 1 Manfrotto 2983 extendable bar. I feel like the bar is a little weak and bends easily under the weight of my camera and gear. I will try to take a better shot this week.

Yes, mine will be carbon fiber. It's made by a company that specializes in CF and they make booms for video work. Mine will be 15ft in 3-5ft sections 2" diameter tube. Then I'm attaching the suction cups and magic arm with these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/398657-REG/Avenger_C4469_C4469_MP_Coupler_with.html I figure it will be better than the pinching of the super clamps...
Here's the link to the place that's building mine: http://www.carbonfibertubeshop.com/bonded%20assemblies.html

Would the Canon 17-55mm be good enough for rig shots? Or should I invest in the Tokina 11-16mm (looking to buy it shortly anyways, but not wanting to if I have to spend another $400 on a rig).
On a crop sensor camera body I don't think the 17mm would be wide enough.

i tested a carbon fiber pole(from a windsurfing place), it flexed, it wasnt that much but it wasnt stiff.. the boom was about 15feet long and it was super fat so the clamps had to be open all the way just to fit the diamater of the tub....

This is indeed an awesome thread.. Thanks to everyone for the enlightenments.
After going through pretty much the whole thing, I still have some questions about building my own under-car rig.
I'm torn between building a rig with carbon tubing or with aluminium tubing. The overall weight is of course an aspect and so is the sturdiness; will a carbon rig be much sturdier than a rig with Aluminum tubing? (same dimensions).
I have found a supplier of good rubber-covered magnets. But how many Newton do they need to attract with? The strongest of them (88mm) is 420 N, which indeed is quite a bit, and may be too much.. At some point I need to get it off the car again. Another option is the smaller 66mm magnet which attracts with 180N.
Hoping for useful replies :)
Kind regards,
Ebbe

So I am in process of putting together a rig and was curious what everyone uses as a trigger release? Originally I was thinking about a wireless trigger but if the car is just being pushed won't the on-camera timer be enough?
Thanks in advance.

Answer to your question is yes, but it doesnt mean your first exposure will be perfect. The more pictures you take, the better chance of you getting a good one with that composite. Having a remote trigger gives a easy way of taking more photos without touch your camera and giving it more bounce then it already have. Try using a remote trigger from ebay. They have cheap wireless trigger.

Here's a question for the masses.. i've been wanting to try these shots for a while, and I have already purchased two suction cups- one came with a small adjustable head which allowed me to mount a camera 10"-12" from the car. What I want to try is the rig setup- using the EMT pipe which seems to be popular, and my magic arm I want to connect them to the cups.
So here's my question: the cups are threaded and I was going to use super clamps to attach the pole. Can I get away with using a standard rigid pin to attach the clamps to the cups? The Avengers use a swivel pin, which would allow for adjustment for curvature of the body panels, but so far I can't find swivel pins having a 3/8" female thread to a 5/8" pin.

I knew there was a post about this somewhere...
For avenger users - I am having a problem with my cups. I mount the cups onto my car and constantly pump. But no matter how long I pump, the red line still remains. Suction is strong and very hard to take off, but I notice the red line doesn't 'disappear' or retract into the pump. Anyone else have this problem? Or maybe could give me a figure of how many times they have to pump til the red line disappears?
I just got two brand new ones from Adorama and ONE of them is doing this. Like you said, the suction is very hard and I can't move it at all, but the red line still slides it's way back out very quickly. I also noticed a very small amount of oily substance on the pump where the red line is. I'm hesitant to put it on a car but I'm getting anxious haha. It seems to "suck" just as good as the other one that keeps the red line hidden, so IDK. I've got everything all put together in my living room right now, so we'll see if I get ambitious and go take some shots haha
edit: Never mind, I'm an idiot, the bottom of the one that was losing suction was all dirty and full of my dog's hair, I guess from when I attempted suctioning it to the tile floor. haha I'm not so smart sometimes. I cleaned it and now it works perfect, no red line

That cause I prefer under car rig... I think the photos are taken with suction cup based rig too low angle, too ordinary. But sometimes really good.
The under car rig needs a little bit PS. The biggest problem is the compatibility... Suction cup based works with the most of the cars... My under car rig is not...
In the case of S2000, I can't setup the rig for the front or the rear :(

I know this is talked about somewhere in the thread, but it's a long thread. Double check this list for me and let me know what to swap in/out if you have better ideas.
Is there a particular part number for the magic arm and ballhead? The Super Clamps are discontinued. Are you guys using a new version, or can they still be found?

Hello everyone, this is my first post so please be gentle!
Having read through this great thread a couple of times I am about to build my first rig using the recommended Avenger/Manfrotto suction cups and clamps together with an aluminium pole.
Now I know that the question has been asked a few times and I have read the answers and recommendations for tubing although most of the suggestions seem like they are only available in the states. Specification for aluminium tubing here in the UK is a little different so I would like to clarify which is best. It seems like I can get hold of 1 3/4” (44.4mm) or 2” (50mm) tubing in either 10 SWG or 16 SWG wall thicknesses. For those that don’t know (like I didn’t) 10 SWG would appear to be 3.2mm thick (about 1/8”) and 16 SWG 1.6mm (about 1/16”).
So those of you that are using tubing of around these sizes please could you give me your recommendations as to what side/thickness is best. I am very concerned that the bigger/thicker the tube the more weight and stress will be put onto suction cups, but at the same time I want the tube to be as rigid as possible and I wonder if the thinner 16 SWG will be too flimsy and possibly collapse when tightened in the Manfrotto clamps.
Finally has anyone tried making up their poles from two different diameters so that one slides inside the other for transport and then just slides out in use, with a clamp to hold it at the desired length, or would the aluminium distort when clamped, making the idea more trouble than it was worth?
I did look into using carbon fibre tubing but the cheapest I could find was about £500ish for the materials needed to make up a 5 metre boom which is a bit serious for a prototype!
Thanks

Well I was thinking I'd try the EMT first just because it's so cheap, but I think now I'm gonna go ahead and get aluminum. The place nearby can get me 10ft and 1.5" wide for $45, although I'm hoping they have something a bit longer

First attempt.... using emt, it is a tad heavy though, even on my mega huge and thick hood it is pulling a little more than I would like it to. So maybe I'll have to get some alum or something lighter, but either way this is my first try at this whole thing.
And yea I need to buy some ND filters stat!!!
I know theres a LOT to improve on, but I will probably be practicing a lot tomorrow night at the parking garage!

I spent about 30 minutes toying with it after I got everything mounted, and that was it. I can't wait to get it on a nice car...I think I'm shooting a very clean and nicely modded E36 M3 Sunday. Probably the dumbest question of the entire thread, but I'm having issues getting the magic arm to lock at the middle joint. I know the instructions say to use that little handle thing, but it just torques and locks while i hold it in place but then just goes back to being loose. Advice?

Same.... I might actually grab a third f1000 just to even out the load a little bit, I know how thick my hood is, but if I do any friend's cars when I get better they might just want to feel a little more assured that everything is ok.
Do any of you guys using these suction cups ever have issues or worry about them pulling on the panels or a the hood flexing; anything of the sort?

I thought it was bad when I had it on our Equinox, but really the hood didn't flex any more than it would from leaning on it. This is with 20' of aluminum RMC. You should be able to tell when it's too much, then just replace your cups.
P.S. It's awfully nice to have ISO 50 on the 5D for these shots!
