Here are some new ones I took today... personally I think I got about 100% better in a matter of 24 hours! So happy with the progress so far!

And for some reason they look way more saturated and have a little more contrast in photoshop and on my desktop than when uploaded online, I don't understand why because my monitor is calibrated like absolutely perfectly... could it be my browser?

Still not a pro at clone and healing but I'll get there eventually I guess, never really had much practice with them besides taking away some skin blemishes on people and paint chips on cars :)

I find typically that Safari washes colors out a bit compared to Firefox. Also, see if you're using sRGB color profile, that helped me too

Yea I really need to work on my clone stamp and brush skills...

are there any tutorials for this stuff out there? or anything I can do differently, I am trying my best but I don't seem to be getting any better, some of these reflections REALLY sucks and are hard to emulate and blend well :(

Also there is no one driving the car beside a ghost. ;p

well the first things i thought when i looked at the pic was that its kind of noisy, something just doesnt look right about the pic. Over sharpened blurry pic maybe?
It looks as if the car is about to turn right but the background suggests its a straight line. So kind of confusing,
The car is way too centered for me also.
The second one would be good if there were a driver :)

Yes, it is a little bit more than sharp. But i like the effect.
I do not know why the lines should not be straight. The time for the picture was 4 sec. and a friend bump-start the car very slowly.

I have some pictures with a driver, but all of the pictures are jittery.
The problem was, we have no one who bump-start the car, the car has only 3 cylinder and it was an automatic.

Please excuse the total noobie question! OK, after you set up the pole rig are you driving when you take the pix? Or is it a still shot you PS the motion blurring?

The Bimmer with te engie 'showing thru the hood', PS, or airbrush on the car itself? Whichever, pretty cool effect.

Another thiing, dang you guys have some amazing cars. Anyone do this with motorcycles?

Shutter release, wireless or just a long extension?

Sucton cups and a long pole with my camera on the end driving down the road gives me the willies!

smart ass, the shutter was open for 5 seconds, i was moving slow. that is not still.

this is still;

http://i36.tinypic.com/330eans.jpg

can you see the difference?

i didnt want a complete blur, because i was attempting to do a drift shot cus think about it if a car was moving fast at you, youd need a faster shutter speed to capture it still, hence the floor looking not that blurred......it may have worked, it may not have. But im happy with it

This has to be a composite, which is fine. Look at what's left of the tread...It is not blurred at all. Has to be at least two shots. No need for you guys to get in a pissing match, but you can clearly see the tire treads on the ground are NOT moving.

Like I said, it's fine. The tread does throw me off though, and it would be a better shot with fluid motion throughout.

i was just trying something different you know and it was just for me of my car.
I still have no idea on which way the ground should actually be moving

0o0o0
8th of October 2009 (Thu), 14:43
DonJuanMair, I've always liked your rig shots, but this drifting one just looks too artificial to me. It's a good attempt, but it looks like it came from Need For Speed or something.. which is kinda cool, but for this kind of photography, it doesn't really suit. Also not feeling the fake headlights on - IMO, it would look much better if it wasn't there.
The execution of this shot as a rig shot, however, is great.
As for which way the ground should be moving, there are 2 perspectives... For the purpose of this, we'll assume a rig shot. The ground should be moving up and down .If you try to picture a car drifting (properly), the front wheels are pointed to where the driver wants to go. In this case, the wheel is pointed towards the camera meaning the car is tracking straight ahead.
If you're wondering the 2nd perspective is from the sideline which in this case should "freeze" the ground and the sky

Good try though. Still a nice shot :)

Yea seriously... some super high end cars there. I haven't seen one of those jag's in a LONG time either!

For the one with the mini, it doesn't make sense to me. How do you get the wheels turned to the left, but the curve going right. Proper looking drift shot, but it doesn't seem like that's how it would properly blur without actually being sideways and really drifting (not to mention its a fwd car :)).
If the wheels are lined up like that, the rear of the car would straighten out and the rig should then come with it and the blur should also be left to right, correct?? However it looks like it is actually turning around the corner and going right to left which I don't think it should be with how everything would move. I'm confused... did you do it in reverse or something? Compose 2 shots? It just isn't making proper sense to me!

Or maybe I am not thinking properly. Help....

a friend of mine help build one out of SS for me. It's three 4 foot poles, that screw together, anda handbuilt magic arm, haha. No tools needed, and 500 pound suction cups with custom adaptors were made. super nice guy, and extremely talented at welding / customization. ( www.slappyscreations.com and yes he needs a new site ) He is un-employed at the moment so i told him to start buildilng these and to start selling these guys, haha.

It's pretty strong, a little heavy but very sturdy. On his 'test' truck we put almost all his weight on it, thing is gonna rip the hood off before the rig falls off.

I'm stuggling with psing the rig out and it being 'perfect' where you can't see it. Do you guys find different locations easier to crop out? like if the reflection doesn't go through the headlight? or roof shots are easier? i'm still learning :)

anyone stacking filters? or do i just need to pony up and buy the hoya instead of the cheaper ones?

Question for you guys.

Do you think it would help at all with reflections on the car and making it easier to clone / heal if the pole was sprayed black or something other than it having the metallic silver finish?

Anyone attempt this or have experience? Would that take away from the reflective properties a little bit, or actually maybe make it worse....

Yes, I've done both. And it can work for and against you. Some times silver reflects light back directly into the shot so can cause you grief. Other times a black component or booms reflection in a panel is MORE prominent than a silver equivalent component or boom.

Don't waste time worrying about it but overall black is better for components but can go either way for a boom.

my suction cups used to be orange, and figured black would be easier to chop out in the mix...but looking back it's difficult either way.

What ND filters are you guys using? i'm using an nd8 filter (on my 17-50 and 11-16) and really get BLUE tones out of them and just not great results. not sure if it's from the big bouncing around or if it's a ****ty $10 ebay filter. I just don't have $150 to BLOW on a filter if it's not guaranteed to fix my 'blah' shots..i can post pics to show what im talking about.

I have double the amount of piping I need, maybe I'll spray the other half black and do some tests...

other than that, I have nd filters that are a .6, 4 and an 8, I use the 8 alot during extreme sunlight, the 4 when its kinda overcast, never really touched the .6 I just kinda have it

could probably just use the 4 if I wanted to and just do a shorter exposure

Local electrical supplier wants $36.29 for a 10' 1.5" AL RMC with threaded ends and a coupler...This seems about the right price yes?

Also for those with 10'....you wish you had more? should i just start with a 10' and upgrade later? shooting a 40D with 10-22.

SamHunter

That's a good price and the threaded end means you can try it out first and see if you need more. 40D with 10-22 should be fine, I have plenty of room with my 40D and 10-20 unless I suction on the roof then it gets a bit tighter
