I have 4 (68in x 2in) poles and finding a bag is impossible!

Try fishing-rod bag. I use one, 170cm long, and i think great one. This have a shoulder-strap, and two section inside.

just for example:

It's serious... In the last month, I asked a poeple who make carbon pipes for the prices, and I throw the idea. Very expensive to my cheap setup... :P Nice the flexing... The not flexing... :D

I got these because I didn't like the way the superclamps pinched on only two sides. These hug the pipe with a bit more uniform pressure and they're a lot easier to attach the poles too.

Im just about to build my own rig, a cheap one, and thought i might ask you guys what you recomend to use as a arm from the pipe to the camera?

I have been lookin on the super clamp and a magic arm but the price tag is abit to heavy, is there any other cheaper ways to link the camera to the pipe?

B&H have perfect kit (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/581220-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging__155_Double_Ball_Joint. html) but the shipping and customs fees are way to expensive. Total: $ 189.18

Hey folks!

I bought 3 strong magnets last week, each has the power to fix 160kg.
I will now buy pipes to build my car rig, i think i will go for 3m (plus 1m under the car)

My local hardware store hs got some nice 1 1/2inch aluminum pipes with 0.08inch wall.
This pipes are pretty heavy i think. What diameter and length would you buy?
What weight does your rig have?

Cheers

how will you get them off again? can you pull with a force of 160kg? wont this dent the car?

sevsev
26th of October 2009 (Mon), 13:05
PJH, typically magnets are used for undercar rigs. Magnets on panels would scratch the **** out of the paint

pullerknabe, I would measure to find out what you need. I took my lens, stood at a car where I believed would be the farthest I'd want to shoot from and then measured the points

I can't decide what length to cut my 2nd alum rmc. First is at 8' cause thats most my car fits inside, which leaves a 2' piece which can be put on with the threaded coupler for the full 10'. I can get 16' max if I cut the 2nd piece the same but if I cut it at 4'/6' I'll have lengths 2', 4', 6', 8', 10', 12', 14' by mix n matching (weight savings instead of using the full size everytime). hmmmmmmmmmm, will I want 16'

Well I'd be a little scared to because CF hoods are generally weaker than the typical sheet metal/aluminum hoods. Good thing it doesn't warp though. Are you using an EMT pole or a lightweight aluminum pole? Awesome shot, btw.

on mine? most likely bouncing in the pole. its not very stable and the road wasnt smooth by any means. plus i was running along side it and probably knocked it a couple times.

actually had a MAJOR scare when my hoodie caught the quick release on the head and released the camera. luckily i always wrap the strap around the pole just in case and in this case it held it long enough for me to grab it lol. scary ****!

depending on the style of the wheels you can pull/push the car by crouching on the other side and pulling on the spokes. i've done that a couple times. just frame everything up with the camera how you want and then figure out a spot that you can't be seen.

Yeah that car was a bit tricky compared to other cars. I had the suction cups either on the hood for the front shots, and on trunk area for the rear. I was kinda scared before shooting the car because I knew it was a drop top (can't put it on roof) and thought the rear of the car would be covered in vents, but thankfully that wasn't the case.

Some great shots here and some fantastic rigs.

On the flip side, i'm surprised at the number of people who are prepared to risk thousands of dollars worth of camera/lens by using the cheapest possible pieces of carp they can lay their hands on.

I finally ordered a rig! Went with the typical Avenger F1000, Super Clamps, Magic Arm setup. I decided to go with the variable friction arm. Also ordered 2" OD pipe from speedymetals.com, hopefully the 2" is not too much for the super clamps to grab onto. I have seen that quite a few people use 2" booms, how well do the super clamps grab?

I still need to get an ND filter. I want to go w/ B+W as I have had bad experiences w/ Hoya filters.

I am still trying to decide between the #110 ND 3.0 (10 stops) or #106 ND 1.8 (6 stops). I plan on stacking a CPL on top and I want to shoot in the daytime. Will the 10 stop be too much with the CPL?

Probably.

I tend to use the 106 + polariser.

There are some examples of exposures times with the 106 + polariser here (http://www.rigshots.com.au/howto1.htm#Optimum_shutter_speed).

The suction cup will have the spigot on the end, if your ballhead can take this then just pop it on.

The suction cup should have a threaded pin which the ballhead will screw directly on to it. I once tried the magic arm on the suction cup and immediately took it off after one application- I was concerned that the weight and the leverage of the arm would peel the cup off- that, and the arm bounced way too much.. almost like a springboard to dive into a pool.

I once tried the magic arm on the suction cup and immediately took it off after one application- I was concerned that the weight and the leverage of the arm would peel the cup off- that, and the arm bounced way too much.. almost like a springboard to dive into a pool.

My suction cup (Avenger F1000) looks like this. It doesn't have a threaded pin, hence the reason I'm looking for a transition piece.

I received my cups and magic arm today... I am having issues with both cups getting the red line to disappear. They both hold suction, but it takes lots of pumping and the red line is still almost all the way out. I have checked to be sure that both the surface and cups are clean.

I read through this thread and it seems this is a common problem. Has anyone figured out a remedy to this?

Just seems to be the way it is, if it's pumped fast the red line will disappear for me, but will creep back out in a minute or two, but suction stays

If you are having big problems get a spray with just water in it and apply a light coat to the surface - seems to help with the problem..

Thanks guys. The water seemed to do the trick. I have also noticed they they seem to take suction better with a load applied.

Does anybody have a instruction manual for the automotive rig stuff?

How are the pipes attached to the magnets? I ordered some really strong flat magnets and i am going to order 5m aluminum pipes (40mm diameter) soon.
Winter is perfect to build a real rig for the next season

Lots of great work in here!

I am looking for recommendations, with links if possible, in creating a very basic rig. I would like it to mount on the rear quarter panel and let the camera drop down and be kind of low. Looking out towards the front of the car. I run some track days, drifting, auto-x, and run around in the mountains and want to be able to snap some shots from that angle with a wireless shutter release.

Can someone help with a parts list that will keep a Grip'd 40 nice and safe and get the shots I want?

Hello All,

I like that cable system as well. I just got mine all set up today for the first time. I have the Manfrotto super clamps and suction cups. Tried a pool tool extension. No good at all. Now I went to EMT, but wanted 5' pipes to connect, so I can fit it in my car. Well the connectors suck. So I am either doing the cable idea or an idea I have of my own.

Well here are the pics. First one is of my car while testing the rig out for the first time today. The truck is a friends car I shot this evening. Too much bounce, need to stabilize.

great idea

the thread between pole 1 and 2 is really solid and there is no movement at all, however the thread between pole 2 and 3 is kinda messed up or something but it doesn't matter how tight i screw it in its still kinda loose a little bit, so there is some movement there.
hopefully the steel wire will fix that

How would one go about removing the bounce from a rig that has no flex? My pipe is straight as can be, but the whole pole bounces? Is this just how they are?

Sky was dropped in, it was raining at the time of the shoot. A bit of work was put into the sky to make it look like a bright sunny day on the right, and a storm on the left.

Rig can be sen in post #3115 and #3127.

It is (3x) 5ft sections. Very little flex, and the bounce is minimal. I try and space the suction cups as far apart as possible, but besides that I go all out and utilize every inch of the rig. I love the really far away / wide rig shots. I like to keep my shutter speed in the 1 second range so maybe that helps...
