Wow! Love the perspective and the sky. I took this similar shot last year at 13mm with a 14' rig attached to the hood. Where did you attach the rig?

An update.
I couldn't wait till I had the couplings finished to trial the rig and there was a spot of nice weather yesterday so I gave it a go!

The news is mixed. It took me a while to start trusting the suction pads.. I was testing on my BMW Mini and the pads were really deforming my roof metal so in the end I attached them on windows.

Although the test photos are reasonably good, there WAS quite a bit of bounce.. the boom was bobbing up and down. So i might add some sort of suspension cable to keep the beam more taught.

I'm ashamed to post the trial photo so will post once the rig is finished, but generally would advise to go for 2" OD rather than thick 1.5" OD stuff

- I had this cut to (2) - 8" lengths and welded to 2 of the 4' tubes by a local aluminum welder (he does repairs on boat propellers). He had to shave a small amount off of the I.D. off of the couplings. He also made 2 cuts down the length that were 3" long each so the clamps would work.

Hi everybody, I have a question. Does anybody do that pictures for commercial use? I mean for car sealers, people who want to sell his car and need nice pictures or for someone who want to nice pictures of his car just for album.

And another question.
How do you do that pictures, do you meet with customer and you do everything with him or you take a car from customer for few minutes and you take a pictures somewhere where he can't see your technique?

Everyone think that those pictures are taken when car is going very fast so if you will show everybody that is no true then everybody will think they can do that themselves.

thanks for the info.. how much flex (up and down) are you getting when you have this rig set up to 16ft? Also, are you overhanging some of that on the other end to the camera as a counter weight?

jdefoor

That's three 4' sections so it's only 12'. But I am still getting a little flex so I have to be very careful.

I got mine from Nevada on 02392 313 090 sales@nevada.co.uk as i'm sure they had a 10ft pole that slots together, its basically used for Aerials and Nevada are Radio and Aerial suppliers based in Portsmouth I bought a 12ft pole from them and got them to hacksaw it in half so i could get it in the back of my Yaris and then had a friend (roy@eclipserocketry.com) make a joint for me to join the 2 halves together.

it looks like the avenger's are deforming the Mini's roof. It was pretty bad on the Mini One, I can imagine it being even worse on an old Mini?

Also what material are you using for the pole?

Great shots otherwise! I'm guessing you're using the engine to power the car for these shots (seeing as you're sitting in one of them!)?

It's Alluminium tube so pretty light. I started off pushing and the owner was sat inside then we used the motor and switched off once up to speed.

I see.
I'm using 1.5" Ali, but its relatively thick walled.. i suppose you're using 2" ali?
Those audi pictures look fab.. what speeds are you taking them at and what kind of exposures? Is it going slow enough to walk beside the camera and dampen its movement by hand?
I'm still having issues with flex.. even with the addition of a tension cable. Although my one is 5 metres long!

Yeah its 2" tube fairly thin walled and 12ft long with a billet alli conector in the middle. Basically its a slower walking pace (so you can walk backwards) so you can steady the end of the pole with one hand and release the shutter with the other for about 2.5 - 3 seconds, not easy in bright sun on a white car i had to use a CPL, ND8 and ND4 grad and -1 stop to get these images.

Hey guys, decided to join this forum for this great thread. I am about to build my own rig and just have a question about the magic arm. My setup is going to be 2 x F1000 and 3 x 035 Super Clamps, and a 484 ballhead. I'm wondering if it just clamps on or do I need an adapter of some sort? Thanks. Spring is here so I want to get it started soon!

Hey Folks!

I had a first test run with my 6m under the car rig today.
The rig itself worked (not well, but it worked - some room vor improvements) but when i dismounted the
pinching parts from AR.com i saw some strange marks under the car.

Does anybody here has the same experiences with the pinching set from AR?

For the next time i think i will put something between the screws..

Depends on how powerful your suction cups are. I bought some cheap ones they use to hold large panels of glass with and it holds 10 feet of 1 and 1/4" electrical conduit and my XSi with the sigma 10-20 just fine.

Yes I know but if you saw how low it hung I didn't because the car's clutch would have smashed the camera on the ground. It was just a quick shot that I did at a car meet, cuz people asked to see how it was done, and if you know shooting when the sun is high isn't the best time for shadows either so trust me not my best but it was nice of a friend to record the process since i'm usually doing this myself or trying to explain to people who slow the car is.

A good ND Filter. Try this one..... filter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/8087-REG/B_W_65066534_77mm_106_Neutral_Density.html) also add this on top of it. Polarize filter.

Guys I've just recieved my rig equipment but I have one more question.

What do I do with the bodywork of the car prior to putting the avenger suction cups on the bonnet?

Or am I best using the windscreen to mount the suction cups?

Just don't want to dent the bodywork or mark it :)

I think hes asking if you need to prepare the surface to avoid abrasions to the paint!

I would wash the area and clay bar it to remove all the surface dirt!

is the rig safe to mount on the moon roof? i'm still researching the parts but want to shoot my mini with the rig but the entire hood is covered in clear film. the roof has a giant panoramic moon roof so i'm wondering if pressure from the rig will cause any damage. i read thru the entire thread and saw a few minis so maybe somebody can help...

lcrazyaznl
31st of March 2010 (Wed), 15:30
on some cars it works other cars the the moonroof depresses, so it doesn't hold well.

I mount it to sometimes glass and body, but I make sure the end cup has a strong grip and the middle one is more of a support , I think i might get a 3rd suction cup.

I run a 40d with a 17-85. how much feet in pole length am i going to need to setup a good shot?

PJH
9th of April 2010 (Fri), 05:09
the best way to determine that is to just zoom to 17mm, make the frame you want to have and then measure the distance to the car. Also don't forget that your pole does not stop when it reaches the car, you need a little extra length to place the suctioncups on the pole too.

I think 17mm on a 1.6crop body not very wide, chances are you'll need a big pole and that will not be good for the weight/vibrations.

go hunting for a 10-22 lens

How does the aluminum hood and the suction cups deal with each other? I made the mistake of attaching suction cups to an aluminum M3 roof panel and ended up with some small ripples in the panel afterwords. I would hate for that to happen to the hood of an NSX.

I must say that it is really a pain in the ass to try pushing a car, operating the shutter, and at the same time, attempting to turn the wheel. So, I ended up getting the above "straight wheel shot" of my dirty car and calling it a night.

Are there any good tips on how to remove the suction cups? These puppies don't seem to like to come off... lol :)

And, I do realize that my car is really dirty, and that there is some dust on the lens. I was just experimenting with using the magic arm/avenger combo, and I don't really care about my beater.

I am building my first rig and was wondering if anyone had used these magnets (http://www.kjmagnetics.com/categories.asp?cat=86) to mount the rig under the car. I was thinking either the ones with the male stud or female stud attached and then using some super clamps to attach it to the pole. The magnets look powerful enough, but I don't think the male stud is long enough for the super clamp to grab it securely and the female stud is an 8mm and all the male studs they sell at Adorama/etc are 3/8" or 1/4" threads. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Looking at the way the white lines are wavey, it appears that your rig is bouncing. I would try to find smoother pavement, or try and make your rig steadier by adding more support. The faster the shutter, the less "bounce" the sensor will pick up. So, theoretically, your day time shots may be a little better because you can get away with a faster shutter.

Also, I would drop your ISO to practically nothing. This will darken your image, but improve the quality of it. Also, your rig removal post processing really stands out. Try and use clone stamp from areas around the rig so that it blends seamlessly.

I finally built my rig but am scared to death to put it on my car, much less anyone else's. :o

It seems really heavy on the end and I haven't even attached my camera to it. The Avenger suction cups are rated to hold 6 pounds. That doesn't seem like very much weight when I am dangling a $2600 camera on the end of a 13ft pole.

I used an aluminum flagpole I had in my shed that is broken into about 4 ft sections. I used 3 sections and secured them together as shown in the photos. I'd say each piece of pole weighs 2 lbs? Adding the magic arm on the end and the clamp adds a lot of weight on the end, not to mention a camera too. I KNOW you have all done it - I see the photos. I just need some help in how to set it up the first time on the car.

Do you set the suction cups then attach the pole to it? Do you counterbalance the end of the pole opposite the camera? What about attaching to a windshield? Will the additional weight pulling down on the suction cups pull it off the windshield and crash it into the hood? How do you test it for strength?

Crap - this seems scary as $hit. :???:
