What lenses do you guys use?
One would assume 30mm's on FF and maybe 17mm on crop?
No way not nearly wide enough on these types of rigs.
Crop you want 10mm for best results, 12mm will do but will be tight.
On a FF 16-17mm is ideal.

Got my pole today...
I bought some military surplus antenna mast segments off eBay. They are 4ft aluminum segments. For added stability, the pipes have ridges along their length. So far, they look pretty good. I put them together and they seem very stable with little to no flex.
Only problem I'm seeing so far is that the pipe pieces only overlap by a few inches. Also, the pipes don't fit together very snuggly. But my plan is to drill a hole in each connection piece and put a screw in to secure them together.
I don't have the suction cups and other bits yet, so I can't test it at the moment. The poles were my biggest concern though and I think there will be workable. Not bad for $38...

Hi there,
Brand new to Rig shots but here's a couple of my beginner efforts, I've got much to learn especially when it comes to reducing flex on my rig and post processing. Currrently working on an undercar setup using electric window regulator clips that clamp onto the pinch rails, but that's some way off yet.
The well tried 10ft pole seems alright, but I'd like to extend it to 15ft. Do people find that using thicker tube walls makes for less flex / bounce?
C + C is most definitely welcome as I strive to get better.

Ok guys, after going through this HUGE thread for ideas, here is what I have come up with. For yall with experience with this, does this sound about right? It's a bit pricey, but I'm willing to pay a bit more so that it is nice and stable. One thing though, when I totaled all the est. weight for all the items (inc the Avenger F1000's, which I suppose I could leave off...), it comes out to 26.94 lbs, not including the camera (22.08 without the Avengers). How's that for weight? is that about what everyone else is running?
Thoughts?

Well i ended up ordering all this (except i got the regular super clamps), and the 12" sections don't fit inside the larger ones. so i'm going to have to find a machine shop somewhere that can get me some pieces that will fit inside. just a minor detail, but definitely a frustrating one.
just a heads up for those of you wanting to do a similar setup...
i'll keep yall posted!

Sorry to quote my own post - I'm just trying to give an update with proper context...
Today I drilled holes in the overlapping parts of the segments and put a large screw through the inner and outer sections to connect them. Unfortunately, there seems to be a bit of a wobble when all 4 segments are connected together. I'll try it like this, but I have a feeling I'll need wire bracing in the future...
Despite the individual segments seemingly not weighing much, the whole rig seems a bit heavy. I'm a bit concerned about the bending the hood once mounted, to be honest. As anybody weight their rig by any chance? Do you guys put any counter weights behind the suction cups or similar?
My suction cups should be here Monday, at which point I'm ready for some test shots!

And probably a 10' EMT pole from Lowes

as I have it too. But I wanna see what everyone else has or bought so others can look into buying.

1.5" EMT from Lowes is too heavy, anything else is too floppy.
I have 2 sticks of 1.5" (Trade Size) Rigid Aluminum Conduit from an Electrical Supply House. 1 piece is the full 10', the second is cut into 6'8" and 3'4", all 3 sections are threaded at both ends. They have threaded couplers for the conduit. The conduit and the couplers have 1/4" holes drilled through them so I can use a screwdriver to tighten them together.
Im considering cutting my 10' stick in half and getting another coupler. Right now I put the avenger cups to my roof and clamp the 10' stick to it for transport, but this isnt something Id be comfortable with for more than a couple minutes.
I think I want another cup for the back end, too.

All in 3 x 5 foot sections of global truss weighs 9kgs without camera, magic arm etc.
I also use Cullmann suction cups with spigot adapters which seem to work pretty well although the truss generates a hell of a lot of leverage with the camera attached.

Hey guys,
I am drawing a blank on how to connect the pieces to my rig now that the original idea of inserting tubes inside the boom is not working. im basically going with the same idea as itzjere's rig (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7519543&postcount=1742), but i didnt get so lucky with the inner tubes sliding in.
i've seen in the thread that people were talking about using these (https://www.shopwagner.com/nxc/NXCSC.NSF/ItemInformation?openagent&SID=0CC8CC71C64C94AE862577CB005515AB&Item=3379-6&), but i haven't seen if anyone has used them with any success.
i really can't afford to start over, so can anyone think of any ideas to securely connect the boom pieces together?
i appreciate everyone's help!

I had the rig made by a local machine shop that does aircraft work, the couplers are so tight there is no wobble. You actually lubricate them with Chap Stick!!!! The snap rings are obviously there to keep it together. Should get out to use it over the next couple of weeks.

PROBLEM
Guys i have a problem and i wonder if anyone can help, i have a 10ft pole which is great for shots off the hood, but id love a longer pole to take some off the roof of the car. However i own an rx8 and i cant even fit my 10ft pole in it. Can someone recommend an expandable pole maybe?? or any other solution
WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO FIT THE 10 FOOT POLE INSIDE YOUR CAR?????
You have 2 suction cups and 2 super clamps.....
- step 1... Put 2 suction cups on roof with super clamps attached..
- step 2... Put the pole in the clamps.
- step 3... Tighten the super clamps
- step 4... Drive home....
With no weight and minimal wind resistance you shouldn't have a problem (unless you're going 100+ mph and driving like an idiot...
not rocket science!!

OK, everyone who posts a photo like this should also immediately contribute to my rig fund because you really make it difficult for me not to go and get one. I love cars, I love photography and I'm seriously thinking this is probably the best way of combining those two passions. Plus I'm not afraid of the post processing so that's not stopping me either.
On a more serious note, those of you who got a rig because you simply had to have one (and are not pro's) did you end up with some paid gigs to cover the cost? I already have everything else you technically need for these shots (minus the skill and experience) so safe for possibly an ND filter for day shots the rig would be my only expense but I'd still like to see it pay off.

@Dimer ^ I noticed it on flickr earlier. Great photo, cut above the rest
@plawa My rig cost around $400 and it was paid off within 3 months. Not the quickest turnaround but I live in Oklahoma, it's BFE over here. Now I just shoot for free because I enjoy taking the photos. There are instances where I wouldnt mind charging someone but typically they end up buying me dinner for my time which is good enough for me

First things first...Thanks to everyone willing to post all of their work and information for their builds...you are lifesavers...and if anyone has any questions feel free to ask!
Sooo...it finally came time for me to make a rig and quite the experience it has been. If only it wasn't winter in the pacific north west. Hopefully I will get to use it sometime soon but I figured I'd post all of the details to help out anyone that is interested...I know all of this stuff exists in the 2000 pages that I have spent most of my life reading now but I figured I would put it all here anyway just so some of the things I have seen spread out are a little consolidated:
I broke down all of my expenses on an excel spread sheet with some hyperlinks to the actual photography based parts of it...
screenshot:
http://b2dp.com/pictures/rolling_rig/Screen%20shot%202010-11-14%20at%205.46.49%20PM.png
actual excel file:
http://b2dp.com/pictures/rolling_rig/rolling%20rig.xlsx
So my photos of the setup are all here:
http://b2dp.com/pictures/rolling_rig/rolling_rig_web/
I took a few videos before and after adding the cable for some tension and support as it's 20ft long...
before cable bracing:
http://b2dp.com/pictures/rolling_rig/rolling_rig_videos/rolling_rig_nocablebrace.MOV
after cable added:
http://b2dp.com/pictures/rolling_rig/rolling_rig_videos/rolling_rig_cablebrace.MOV
and then I took a video close up walking the length of the entire setup to kinda highlight some of the aspects of the setup:
http://b2dp.com/pictures/rolling_rig/rolling_rig_videos/rolling_rig_002.MOV
hope some of this helps someone....I love this thing and it looks like it has huge potential, I just hope I can get some favorable weather in the next few weeks before the snow hits...

Honestly, I think the photo is spot on. I wouldn't change a thing
It's exceptionally sharp, the colors are great, and the offset (in both center offset and horizon offset) just adds something to the photo that a straight on photo lacks.

^ wouldn't you be more concerned about the lens and body? But rain shouldn't impact the suction cup as once it's applied, it's sealed. I usually also some a bit of water or detail spray which seems to help with suctioning.

^ wouldn't you be more concerned about the lens and body? But rain shouldn't impact the suction cup as once it's applied, it's sealed. I usually also some a bit of water or detail spray which seems to help with suctioning.
I think his thinking is is the suction cup going to fail due to the body being wet causing his camera to hit the deck ;-)
And no no real issues from when I've attached mine to wet surfaces

So I have a minor issue.
I bought this from speedy metals:
1-3/4" OD {A} x 1.500" ID {B} x .125" Wall {C} Tube 6061-T6 Aluminum-By the Inch
3 24 $48.24
2" OD {A} x 1.750" ID {B} x .125" Wall {C} Tube 6061-T6 Aluminum-By the Inch
4 48 $69.12
But when I try to put them together, they don't quite fit. There are imperfections in the pole which doesn't allow me to fit them together. Now I had a buddy shave down the edge of the pole and it seems to fit. But to fit them into each other completely, the entire pole would have to be shaved down with a dremmel. SM is closed today so I'll call them on monday.

You need to have a friend turn them down a couple thousandths of an inch. Using a dremmel would take forever... you need to use a lathe. I had to have mine turned down twelve thousandths of an inch to fit perfectly snug.

So unless you're going to use one a LOT, I'd suggest that you get comfortable with this first: Lotsa' links! First shoot with moving cars need advice. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=358481)

Its a $500-1000 piece of specialized equipment, assuming you have a wide enough lens as it is. Only you can determine if its worth it.

i had the same problem. there's nothing that SM is going to be able to do for you. find a fab shop in your area and ask them to turn the ID of the larger tube down a few thousandths of an inch with a lathe. it will fit perfectly after that.

isnt that like the opposite of using a lathe for the smaller tube to fit in the bigger one?

they have the ones that go inside the tube and turn it that way. worked really well on mine. nice because he only turned 4" or so inside, so the tube goes in then stops at the proper length.
also guys, i was curious about what yall are using as extensions from the cup to the superclamp if you wanted to get a bit of angle into the shots. would the extensions from stickypod (http://www.stickypod.com/osc/product_info.php?products_id=35&osCsid=58646c726fca583a12fd46f63c4f8c90) work?

On a more serious note, those of you who got a rig because you simply had to have one (and are not pro's) did you end up with some paid gigs to cover the cost? I already have everything else you technically need for these shots (minus the skill and experience) so safe for possibly an ND filter for day shots the rig would be my only expense but I'd still like to see it pay off.
If you can get creative, you can make a rig for pretty cheap. I made mine for under $100 easy. You don't need avenger cups and manfrotto magic arms. You can improvise.

Hahaha, that's funny because everywhere I put these photos people are asking me that question. I simply lie down both, the car with a rig and the real camera on the desk; then move the desk.

Is it me, or does you ID and OD of the different piping there not seem to match up? They look SUPER tight in the picture, but according to what was listed, that gap seems like it would be massive, and not prettymuch sealed like they look in the picture.

I'm not sure if you misquoted or if I've misread, but as far as I could see one tube has an inside diameter 1.750" and the other has an outside diameter of 1 3/4", which anyone who knows their fractions and decimals will know is the same. Take into account the manufacturing tolerances and you're going to have a pretty snug fit if they fit at all.

Would a focal length of 18mm on a cropper be wide enough for a rig shot? If not, what would be an ideal focal length(s)?
The Ran
1st of January 2011 (Sat), 22:29
At 18mm on a 1.6x crop body to fit in a 4 metre long car (Ford Escort for example) from the side (the widest you'd need, at a 3/4 angle it'd be narrower and from the front even more so) you'd need the camera to be about 3.25m/10.7ft from the car. So, if you can get a rig long enough it's possible.

Its real tough. If you search for my previous posts in this thread, I have a shot using a 18-55 on a 10' boom, and its pretty tight.
I prefer the 12-14 range on crop, 18-20 on full frame for rigging. Ill go as wide as 10/16 at times.

Im my experience, no, it would not be wide enough. Typically I shoot at 10mm (crop sensor) with my 12' rig, occasionally I pull out the 16' rig and use it. I want even wider, haha.
18mm would be good enough if you wanted to fill the entire frame with the car, and that produces bland rig photos imo.

12' - thats about 3.6m, and 16' - thats about 4.9m, right?
For my rig, i'm thinking of making 4 or 5 sections with a 1.5m lenght. Is that going to be enught for my G10?
Yes those are the right lengths.
4 or 5 sections adding up to 1.5m? Or 4/5 sections each at 1.5m? I hope it's the former because making a rig that long actually work well is a lot easier said than done. G10, I'm not familiar with that camera, I had to google it. 28mm, hmm, that might not be wide enough even if you had a 20 ft rig. It could work but it might not give a wide enough field of view. I'm a sucker for really wide rig photos so my opinion is skewed. Maybe someone else can chime in
