Anyone has any suggestion to make the suction cup works better at cold/low temp?
One of my Avenger F1000 cups kept coming off last night, temp was around 30 F.

I wouldn't imagine there is anything tnat would help. Rubber reacts much diferently in cold temps. This goes for plastic and metal as well which are much more brittle in the freezing cold. Cold car body and cold rubber suction cup is not a good match up.

I don't know if you were able to get your cup sorted out or not.
What I do know is that you can pull the pump actuator out, there is a spring inside and an 'O' Ring, you might want to make sure the 'O' ring is good.
Buy some Silicone grease from either a Pool supply place or a dive store and lightly grease the 'O' ring and see if that helps, if not just replace the 'O' ring

Other than keeping the cup clean and greasing the 'O' ring I don't know what else to suggest.

That's exactly what I use. I used turnbuckles and wire clothesline to provide tension on the pieces to keep it from coming apart. Or you could drill holes and use bolts. It's already cut to fit for transporting it, it assembles easily, is light, and works just fine as far as I can tell. :D

Guys I've got a question, do you think a Canon EF-S 15-85mm Lens is good for rig-shots? Thinkin about buying a new lens for my 60D!
I don't know if 15mm are enough at my 4.5m rig

rigshots.de
8th of January 2012 (Sun), 05:00
Your pole has to be long enough! But it is better to buy a 10-xxmm... Maybe the Tamron 10-24.

apixelintime
8th of January 2012 (Sun), 10:21
I have the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8. It is a great lens! I have not had it on a rig, but I can only imagine it would be stellar on a crop. It would be the equivalent to a 18-26 on a FF (approx)

The Ran
8th of January 2012 (Sun), 12:32
The Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 would probably be the cheapest ultrawide that I know of, no point paying extra for the f/2.8 of the Tokina when it's not needed for rig shots.

This may help, scroll down to the Dimensional Field Of View Calculator: http://www.tawbaware.com/maxlyons/calc.htm

15mm on crop at 4.5m will get you 6.75m horizontally, or if we take out about 1.5m for how much of the pole goes on the car we get 4.5m which sounds like plenty to fit in a car to me. Of course it also depends on what sort of composition you're after, or how much of the frame you actually want the car to take up.

killingspree
8th of January 2012 (Sun), 14:49
Well i also thought about the sigma lens, but i can't really decide between the sigma and the more expensive canon lens. since the 18mp sensors in the new canon crop cameras its difficult to find sharp lenses. in my opinion.

Well I'd assume the Canon would most certainly be sharper, I've heard a few people say it could be an L lenses it performs so well. Really you have to weigh up whether that extra sharpness is worth the cost or whether the Sigma will be "good enough" stopped down which it will be for rig shots. Another thing to remember is unless you have a perfect rig you're not going to get maximum sharpness anyway, after all it's a long exposure on a moving object at the end of a rather flexible pole.

Well... I've just read all 425 pages over the space of around a week on my breaks/dinner at work, what can I say, absolutely stunning work in this thread.

Dedication to get these rigs built to get these shots is awesome, I used to look at these pictures and wonder how they hell they were created (and work in photoshop for a living), and was told that they can only be created by using a rig... Still I wasn't conviced and thought surely it can be done using photoshop!?

Then I found this thread! :D I'm already on the case buying parts to build my own rig, as I can't wait to get out taking photo's just like the ones everyones posted, along with ones with my own twist.... I wouldn't of been able to build a rig to the specs you need without this thread, so massive thanks to everyone who's posted pictures and information about their set ups, props! ;-)

So true - the angle and where it comes off the car and where the camera hangs is VERY important to make it easier to clone it out. Easiest would to set the rig up on the roof and hang it off the side of the car (but the least attractive framing). What you did would be a nightmare. LOL! It takes practice - I still end up resetting mine sometime because the rig just isn't at the right angle or is covering too much of the car.

Yeah i know, but my garage was not wide enough :D

So just for testinstall i put on the camera in that angle :P

But here are my first test from today.

Well the background seems to be difficult to remove the rig =/

Any tipps?

Well i also thought about the sigma lens, but i can't really decide between the sigma and the more expensive canon lens. since the 18mp sensors in the new canon crop cameras its difficult to find sharp lenses. in my opinion. Generally, a lens was considered sharpest at 2.5-3 stops down from the maximum aperture. Now with the "crop-sensors", we're using mainly the center (sharpest) portion of the lens & I'm not sure where the dividing line is.
When you get up near f/16, you will start to lose some sharpness to diffraction, so the old saying, "F/8, and be there." works a lot of the time.

So with rig shots, if you need f/22, then you lose some sharpness.
If you use a cheap ND filter to get a wider aperture, then you lose some sharpness.
And if your rig isn't absolutely rigid, then you lose some sharpness.

Also if you don't know how to sharpen effectively, then you lose some sharpness, too. Sticky: Sharpening Tips & Tricks, Tutorials, and FAQ (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=466333)

But don't give up! Motion blur has it's place, too! "Nightmare Cruise" with a happy ending. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=737189)

If you just getting started with Photoshop I recommend you shoot the car where the sky is the background (or a grove of trees, etc). Something that is easy to clone and hide the rig. Grooved siding on building will be hard as the lines all have to line up vertically to look realistic. Nice looking rig! Give it a shot with just the sky as the background and go from there.

After reading through this entire 427 pages of thread. Finally was able to create a rig of my own, thanks to James giving me the idea of using flag poles.

I am using an aluminum 2" Flag Pole Kit: 60$-65$ shipped from amazon and just put a pin screw to hold them together since they are already made to sleeve. I am waiting for my ND variable filters to arrive so I can do some test shots later.

Been a while since I've used my rig. Put it together with a friend a few years back and he's had it since. Just finished editing my first rig shot in a while. C and C welcome. Definitely have more to put up.

I'm using the avenger cups and manfrotto clamps. I currently have a 15' piece of metal ducting/pipe...but it's quite bouncy, I'm definitely looking into something more solid!

The flag pole idea is nice, as it breaks into two smaller sections. So I wouldn't need to have pipe sticking out my back window of my little bmw e30! Plus the cable tension-ers probably stiffen that baby right up.

I wanted to try this too, but haven't thought out a way to get the foam all the way to a point halfway in (6' ish) where the foam will expand leaving no cavaties/pockets of air...

I've only played with the stuff once, but it does expand a lot, so it maybe be possible to start at one end and force the expansions to the other side of the pole?

I am a weatherization contractor. Our employees use expandable foam all the time (similar to the readily available "great-stuff" foam). You can buy low-expansion or high-expansion foam at places like home depot. You could also just drill 1/8" holes every foot or so and stick the little straw in there to fill the entire poll. I doubt foam would add any rigidity though... Otherwise professionally-made jib-booms would be using that technique; and they're not.

Ive been lurking here for a while, starting at Page #1 right through to this..

Decided Im going to build a Rig, yesterday I got my 15' section of Alloy tube, 48mm OD really light & stiff too, cut into three pieces.
Today saw a mate whos a Machinist , weve now figured out how to make light weight sleeves to allow assembly & disassembly easily.

Got some suckers , but being out of the boondocks , in the Land Down Under,.. I had to settle for Glass Suckers, theyre ugly but way strong, now figuring out multi adjustable mounts for them .

Ordered Magic Arm n super clamps for the other end,

Got a few nice cars teed up for shoots

Out here in the bush we have fab a lot of stuff so it'll turn out OK, just not shiney/pretty like a few rigs here..

Hey,

I've been having a good read through this thread and going to start making my rig soon.

I've found a company selling aluminium flag poles over here in the UK which are already cut into 4ft sections and slot together which is great. However they are 50mm (2") diameter but only 1mm gauge, i've seen on here most people are using 3mm gauge. Does anyone know if 1mm will bend with the weight before I fork out for them?

Ah, missed the Vari part. Still, surprised it's that thick to cause so much vignetting.

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah its my damn Vari ND I originally bought for when I shot video on a 28-70. Holding me over for now. Still have to try some shots without it once it gets a little darker.

Be on the lookout!

Just getting organised for my first Rigg Shoot .

Can anyone just give me a ball park figure for Shutter Speed ??

4 seconds , 6 seconds ?, 10 seconds ?

Given that Ill be using a 10-24 Sigma on a 7D.

Does everyone use a wireless remote ??< or just hit the countdown times ??

Thanks

I find myself playing anywhere between 1/2 second and 5 seconds depending on th lighting, car colour, background luminosity, etc. As for having a wireless trigger, it CERTAINLY makes your life esier but is not mandatory. When I started I would just use my 10sec timer but it quickly gets annoying so I went out and grabbed a proper OEM wired trigger. (I suggest shying away from the cheap wireless trigger option for the 7D, theres no half click focus capabilities and I find it is not always the most trustworthy to fire when pressed, just my .02 though when I had my 7D.)

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips.....Ill keep these in mind, weve only got two decent underground car parks here in town...got a spot in mind though got a big park with lots of overhanging trees n stuff...might be just what Im after..

I was home late tonight, spent an hour in the workshop trying to get some temporary clamps attached to the suckers n boom.
My boom is 15' seems really long, how far away from the car does everyone shoot ?? I'll be using a 10-20 on a 7D ??.

Need to go to the hardware shop to get a couple of threaded rod sections...cant wait for my Super Clamps to arrive....
Magic arms arrived, just need the clamps.......
Ordered a new 100-400 today for my motorsport n Airoplane shots,...cant wait,,
