Here is a work in progress from last night using Corzy's rig. Still working on getting better at the cloning, right now its horrible.... practice practice practice....

We also need practice on setting up the rig, literally took us over 2 hours to get it into a good solid position using a combo of automotive rigs pinch system and magnets.

THough this is the best distance we've ever gotten out of the rig! Will post shot with rig later.

For people shooting daytime rig shots, what ND filters are you using? I don't remember it mentioned in the thread before.

Shopping around now and trying to figure which ND to go with. Looking at a B+W ND8, thinking though that I may want to get two ND4's instead and stack them when needed?

Read this. (http://www.rigshots.com.au/howto1.htm#Filters_for_rig_shots) I think it should help.

This is shot with a B+W 106 and polarising filter, burning Aussie sunshine, 8sec at f8. More examples here (http://www.rigshots.com.au/howto1.htm#Optimum_shutter_speed).

wow, i'm amazed! So it could rig the mini too, luck they didn't come with plastic covers underneath it. You might want to correct the colour temperature for the road and body. Did you do a underexposure for the lights? Might want to try replaing that next time. Do the same exposure as the rig without the car moving while the lights are switched off, then do another exposure just for the lights. Fix it all at photoshop later...

Thanx Couleur,

Yes, American MINI's don't have the underbody plast that the Euro ones have. Though I wish I had the paneling the Euro MINI's come with! hehe.

Actually, the photo is still a work in progress. I just quickly cloned it and uploaded it. Thats why it really hasn't been fixed much. Also it was shot under mixed light (I know, not good). We spent so much time setting up that rig that we lost all daylight we wanted to shoot with and we also didn't have time to change location. So we decided to just shoot down my street which has terrible sodium vapor lighting, hence the orange tint. With just that street light and a 5 second exposure we still didn't have enough light, so I had Corzy point his car headlights at the side of the car so we drove through his headlights in the middle of the exposure. We shot RAW and even there I had trouble getting better color in just adusting the white balance.

I'll post a better verson in the future when I have more time.

Aight, here is a breakdown of the shots we did that night. Like I said we didn't have many options, but that was our fault.

This shows what we were naturally working with in a static shot. You can see the sodium vapor street light that was offering most of our light... Sadly we couldn't "turn it off" hehe:

Directly off the camera, just converted to JPEG using Lightroom:

Here is a much better adjusted shot with more light from Corzy's headlights:

http://www.josephregner.com/photos/435175304_avdMv-L.jpg

Here is the exact same shot as the first image I posted but adjusted a bit more for the correct color in the car (which my MINI is "Pepper White", which is a bit Off White).

Wow, that is one long thread...

Anywho, I'm about to take on the challenge and I'm looking for some tips.

I'm going to go with the standard setup:
2 x Avenger F1000 Cups
3 x Manfrotto Super Clamps
1 x Manfrotto Ball Head
1 x 10' Aluminum Pole

Is this a stable and safe design?

I'm going to be using a Canon 40D with a Sigma 10-20mm lens.

Do you guys recommend getting some sort of a remote for the camera?

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I wish I knew. Corzy will have to step in and say because they're his.

Let me just tell you, hooking up the rig to the mini was soo much harder than I thought! When I had my rig with the magnet setup only, we popped on the bars with the magnets and put the poles together and that was it. Let me advise you all, the pinch weld clamping system from autorigs.com works BEST with cars that have pinch welds (or similar - something STURDY!). Of course, if you look at the picture of the pinch weld clamp, we rigged the rig a little bit (lol) so that the clamp has something to clamp onto.

dude, it's okay. The first time I rig it a car underneath it took me 2 hours too. :) It's all about the experience, i think we could make it 30 minutes next time... just need to get a proper car jack...

Personally I don't think the light is not as bad as you said so. It's good enough! And you've made the most out of the situation which is great! What more could you ask for? Flash? hehe....

wow, that looks pretty small, is it strong? I'm using RB 100 and it as stable as it seems. What is the diameter of your pole? Seems pretty small...

I'm using 3 magnets. 2 infront and 1 at the back, the back one could be extended, just in case it reaches uneven surfaces...

For photoshop help, checkout the Porsche Retouched topic. That will help you a lot...

The magnets are surprisingly strong for their size. Again, its Corzy's stuff so he would have full details, I think he said each magnet is rated for 200lbs. Trust me when they grab you better not have your finger anywhere near them because you won't be happy hehe.

If I were to guess I would say the magnets are about 1 1/2" in diameter. Also the pinch weld kit you see in the picture is directly from AutomotiveRigs.com, I think its built for a 2" diameter pole and Corzy's are a bit smaller so I'm guessing the poles are 1 1/2" also, thats why you see the small peice of cardboard stuffed in there hehe.

I think a 2" diameter pole would help alot in making the rig stiffer and more steady, hence why the AutomotiveRigs.com setup went with 2" diameter IIRC.

I saw the Porsche touch up thread a few days ago and DEFINITELY plan on watching the video's a few times. I definitely need the practice.

I just wish someone would do a screencast like that for Cloning out rigs, so I can just see how some people do it specifically for rigs.

CorzyPhoto

couleur - These are the magnets I have: http://kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=MM%2DD%2D60

Pull force is rated at 249 lbs... But remember that on a lot of the surfaces it doesn't stick THAT well because of uneven planes, insulation coatings, mixed metal types, etc.

I think the pole is 2", I would have to double check. The automotive rigs poles are bigger, but also a lot thinner. The poles that I have are amazingly sturdy! They have a thick sidewall.

Anyhow, whatever bounce or wiggle that we have during shots can be solved with just a string attached by the camera to two different points on the car.

FFS.. lol... i almost finished my DIY rig and now its bloody snowing..ahahahhahaa... i'm still waiting on a few pieces to complete it like the camera attachment arm and some cables... but yah i want to test it out soon. I have made one that attaches under, no magnets just clamps. I will most likely do a magnet one as well. Total cost so far probably under 250bux. the most expensive part is the manfrotto magic arm 99.99 on ebay, pipes, clamps and other crap is relativley cheap. I think my tubes might be to heavy tho... but i dont know yet i havent tested it. HOpefully i can provide some pics as soon as the weather clears and stops snowing.

so far everything has been bought @ home depot and verious piping/metal shops.

I also tried to clone the rig out, I was bored..I also wanted to ask you guys for some advices regarding cloning, what are the best settings, brushes etc.? Thanks!

I used the Vanishing point filter in CS3 extended for the wall, I then used the Marquee tool in VP filter to select a bigger area and dropped the opacity to make sure I could see the grout lines on the layer below the selection and made sure the clone tool was set to heal for the majority of the clone and then when there is an edge change to the regular clone with heal turned off.
With cloning out of the suction cups on the Hood/Bonnet I went into the brush tool selection in the right tool bar and adjusted the brush tip shape from a circle into an ellipse and an angle of 15 degrees.
Hope this helps

i can see where it was cloned out and if u looke closley u can see that the new stuff is a bit off and doesnt line up.. those are the kind of limitations there are with busy or a background with a not so easy pattern.

You guys did a good job but its stil lnot perfect...cloning out from bottom(asphalt), is much easier and not as much to match.

It took me all of about 10 mins to complete, the hardest part was the transition to the car hood/bonnet.
I was also dealing with the low res image you see here.
Hi res would be a different animal.
If the original image was not posted for you to compare I think you would have a hard time.
I agree that if the rig is an under car type it is easier to clone a large expanse of an area, however you still have to worry about reflections in the paint if using a galvanized/shiny pole.

saturnin
22nd of December 2008 (Mon), 12:27
reflections will happen for either top or bottom set up.. all depends on the shine and light of course.. so chooping the actual hood and front nose happens often.

dont get me wrong the photochop is good.. but the wall just doesnt look right on the right side, i'm sure with more time spent it could be 100%. ;)

if you want schematics of diy rig just look @ automotive rigs.. thee pictures of parts are there for everyoen to see.

But you'll see, it's not a real rig, it's a "home made" system, with a magic arm (manfrotto) attached under the car and a tripod.

What's the definition of a "real" rig? The last time I checked a rig was something someone made that consists of frabricating poles, suction cups, magnets, clamps, tripod heads, wires, etc etc to take pictures going the same speed as an object/person. Correct me if I'm wrong?

Do I have a real rig? :)

Tom you' crazy! XD .......

Maybe crazy, but it works !

This is the only equipment i dispose, so i have to deal with it...

It has the advantage to be fixed on the car easily and quickly.
But only 10% of the pictures are good. There's still a lot of blur because the whole system moves... If i didn't hold the camera, it fells immediately on the ground...

But i'm just a beginner, this is my 2nd attempt of rig shot on a car. I'm sure i can do better ;)

Quick question for you guys; what do you think of these suction cups:

Those are no good, i've tried them. But if you want a really good set of Suction cups then get these are Harbor Freight:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=46134

Work best on glass but work almost just as well on clean paint. I left one attached to my car for 2 weeks for testing and it never budged even at speeds up to 120mph. They are rated for 125lbs each.

I've also used them to shoot tons of autocross video's and have never had it loose suction.

No matter what suction cups you use you shouldn't leave your camera unattended at the end of the rig without someone standing there anyway, even with the $80 suction cups, which when not mounted correctly i've seen come off a car.

bimmer - it depends what kind of lighting you are shooting in.. but if you set your camera to the TV mode, a 1 second exposure usually makes a nice but not too much blur (also depends how fast you are going).

Can anyone tell me what I could use as a hinge between two emt poles?
What kind of wire are most of u using for adjustments and stability? Found some Galv Metal Wire at Home Depot.
Also, could anyone tell me the dimensions of the automotive rig setup? I think I found somewhere that they use 4 3ft Poles, but I do not know the width.
Thanks

What are you guys using to connect your emt poles together(Konstantinos for example). I am looking for a more stable solution that U Bolts.

Square tubing is bad for holding weight, You should get around 2in diameter round aluminum tubing like the AutomotiveRigs.com setup.

Its a great shot and looks alot like a rig shot, but its alot different from a rig shot. You can tell the speed was low when the truck shot was taken. Rig shots give an effect of intense speed while keeping the car in rock solid focus (when done correctly hehe).

nope this is the first time i've tried any sort of rig shot. the garage shots were the first time ever using the rig and then the ones of the silver Z a couple posts up are the first time using it on an actual shoot and stuff. i was really happy with how they came out.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get some suction cups when the funds come around. I'd like to have both setups (under and suction).

Its my XT kit lens with a wide angle screwed to the front from my video camear. Works perfect and is about as wide as my friends 10-22 :)

Thanks my Brotha!

That quality is pretty good considering the fact that you used the 18-55 non-is with a add-on.
Do you know exactly which add-on it is?

I found 2 aluminum 6 foot poles at home depot that actually screw together. they were in the same box/area as some wooden broom stick type poles. i'd say their bout an inch and a half or so in diameter. I'm not sure how you could add more to yours but you could go buy the type of poles i have :) lol they were like 20 bucks a piece.

yea, I'm pretty happy with it. I take a lot of pics with that set up as its my only lens besides my 75-300mm that I have. I'm not sure which wide angle it is. It came with my sony vx2100 video camera from bandhphoto.com I'll check in the morning and see if I can get a name and stuff.

Thanks Jeremy! I might have to go and poke around today and see what I can come up with!

Good job on your snow shots BTW :)

Thanks Buddy Yeh it's may car. You can see it in two magazines next month.

Vette Magazine "Capitol Thrill" and Corvette Enthusiast Magazine "Wheelers Wild Ride"

Glad you like the car my Brotha!

Went to Home Depot and picked up another 10ft piece of EMT pole. Hacksawed off 3 feet and bought a set screw coupler. Just got done with it , and it is as rigid as it was before. Now I just need it to be warmer then ZERO here so I can go shoot with it!

I am shooting another Vette for the Magazine so I will post them when I am done!

I have a shoot tomorrow with a lambo.. I'm hoping my under car rig works. I only have an hour to work with the shoot so I won't be breaking out the strobes. I just wanted to get some input from you guys for prep. I know someone here shot that white lambo with the black sharpie all over - I wonder if he tried an under car rig but I know he used pump cup.

Cool Jeremy I didn't know you knew those two cars. Yeh that turned out to be a great cover, I am sure they are happy with it. I have been freelance working for the magazine for about 6 months now and my shots are just now hitting news stands.

I certainly don't have any experience with the car, but really looking forward to the results!

Yep, Glen (batman) and Frank (superman). I got hooked up with the Lamborghini Club in Chicago and film and take pictures of the cruises that they do. Its a Lambo Club event but there's generally all forms of exotics and nice cars and these guys are very good friends with the lady in charge. Super nice people. Their helping me build a website in exchange for pics and videos so I'm pretty excited. We have a super hero themed video in the works now for when the weather warms up. can't wait for that!

here's the videos that their in now.

The White Lambo with the black vinyl scribble all over it was a suction cup rig...
