Today I did some hot pixels tests with my newly bought Digital Rebel. I took two shots at ISO100, one at 30" another at 1" with black lens cap and eyepiece on. I used RAW format converted to 16-bit TIF using Canons File Viewer Utility. Then I tested the TIF files with DeadPixelTest.exe found on http://www.starzen.com/imaging/deadpixeltest.htmm which was recommended on this forum. I set up a threshold for Hot pixels to 30.

- At 1" I've got only 1 hot pixel with a luminance 30 or greater.
- At 30" I've got 24 hot pixels with a luminance 30 or greater. 6 pixels had luminance 60 or greater. The pixels were not random, but grouped in 3 "spots". One spot had 13 pixels grouped together. I am afraid to think what would happen at exposures of 15-20 minutes. I can't test it now, because I don't have my remote yet.

By searching Internet and this forum I found out, that it's virtually impossible to get a camera without hot pixels. I have an option to exchange or even get a full refund for the camera within 30 days. But I don't want to end up with something worse, that I have now. Could you please share your experiences with hot pixel tests? What I am hoping to find out is what is the reasonable expectation for hot pixels from this type of camera.

Thanks in advance.

If you go looking for hot pixels, you will most surely find them.

I've done a fair number of 30 sec exposures lately and have found between 5 and 10 hot pixels (it's the same number each time, I just can't remember the exact number). At least I think they are hot pixels--they show up as a single red or blue dot. No clumbs--all spread out. I wasn't conducting a test, though, so maybe I have more.

My feeling is that they are easy enough to clean up--and I don't take 30 second exposures that often!

I am looking for the information about at the minimal number of hot pixels, which is reasonable to expect from Canon’s 6MP CMOS.
