View Full Version : DPP 1.5....I Like It!

My impressions. Totally unscientific. Runs faster on my computer than old version. I like the crop tool, absoultly a great feature addition. Wish the sharpening feature had some sort of "preview" function, it seems to be only available as a setting for the conversion/output of an image after editing. You will only see the results after the image is converted. The color tone curve/profile is very pleasing.......it should be, their cameras-their profiles. Feels even more like C1 now. Here is one of my images that I quickly put through the workflow. (Camera 1DMkII)

Yes, it's very nice, especially for the price.
It gives C1 and ACR a run for sure.
However, even Dpp1.5 still suffers from the purple fringing (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=47296) and demosaicing bugs from Dpp1.1

Do you install the 1.5 over the original DPP or do you remove the old one first? I suspect that you install it over it as it's an update, but that would only be logical and not necessarily correct.

You can download it from the support site of the 20D or 1D Mark II.
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=314&m odelid=9808#New%20Window
Look under Software.
I now understand that you must have the original version installed first for the upgrade to work.

The Canon website says:

Before downloading Digital Photo Professional 1.5.0 Updater for Windows please make sure that if any of the applications listed below are installed on your computer.
- File Viewer Utility 1.1 to 1.3
- EOS Viewer Utility 1.0/1.1
- Digital Photo Professional 1.0/1.1
- RAW Image Task 1.2

You need to have one of those installed if you want to install DPP 1.5.

Guess what, delete shortcut on 1.5 actually works, on my Mac that is!

It seems slower than 1.0 in terms of preview in edit window, I suppose it has something to do with "standard" setting.

OK
I go here and it says only available for "1" series owners and askes for a serial #.

Ok I found this update for the DPP under the 300D update page
http://alpha01.c-wss.com/wsss/ApplServlet?SV=WWUCA900

It does list the update but the problem is I dont have the softwear at all, my 300D purchased about a year ago didnt come with DPP in the bundle, the only part of the softwear that I got that I installed was the file viewer utility just so I could process raw files and it sucked so bad on my P3 system that I just use jpeg.

So where do I get the original version so I can download the updade?

Edit: Synce I have the flive viewer utuilty version 1.3.2.11
can I download the DPP update and Install it?

When you get to the main page, use the pull-down menus to go to the appropriate site for your camera model. I went through the process and got to the download page for DPP 1.5 for Digital Rebel. No serial to enter.
Hope this helps,
Rob

Can any one confirm that they have this running on Mac OSX without having 'classic' installed?

I have OSX but removed all traces of Classic as i have no use for this OS but this update will not seem to run without it.

I had the same problem. You have to take the .hqx file and drag and drop it onto the unstuff icon (manually opening the file). This worked just fine.

Hello

Pretty new to this

I gather that the DPP is a tool to speed up the downloading of RAW images.

Can someone please explain the other benefits and where I get DPP version 1.0 from?

Sorry

Actually it is a RAW Format Processing tool from Canon. It manipulates the RAW image and processes the output file for the intended use (ex. web or print output). New version adds crop and output sharpening capabilities.

It should not be confused with PhotoShop which can process raw files but PhotoShop's strength is in image editing.
Hope this helps,
Rob

I don't think you need V1.0 ( I didn't). I understand that you just need to have one of the following installed on your PC/mac.

- File Viewer Utility 1.1 to 1.3
- EOS Viewer Utility 1.0/1.1
- Digital Photo Professional 1.0/1.1
- RAW Image Task 1.2

I was just curious more than anything as I have already downloaded for my MKII. The 300D doesn't show as available in the dropdown menus. Given that this is an update and not a clean install I don't think that anyone without a previous install will be able to use this.

I never installed DPP 1.1 from my 20D. Instead I tried to install v1.5 directly but it said I had to have the old version installed first. So...you have to have an older version pre-installed.

I had DPP1.1 installed at one point, but I uninstalled it last month due to the bugs.
I was actually able to install DPP1.5 without first installing DPP1.1
Perhaps there was something left in the registry.

It does not have 300D as a choice but it does have Digital Rebel as a choice. This is a Canon USA site-Digital Rebel.........Canon Europe-300D.

Ok I downloaded the update and I never had the previous version. The only canon sofwear I have is the EOS file viewer utility. I unziped the DPP update and it installed the whole program cleanly. Now I need to spend some time watching the tutorials on the Canon digital learning centers web site.

http://www.photoworkshop.com/canon/index.html

Hopefully this is a huge improvment over the file viewer utilitys raw conversion. I give a big thumbs up to canon for making this available for free to Digital Rebel owners.

In the Canon EOS 20 d review over at dpreview, the resolution pictures for DPP shows clearly demosaicing and moire artifacts.
Does anybody have any experince with these problems in the 1.5 update?

Yes, the demosaicing and moire artifacts, and the purple fringing bug, are all still there. It appears the rendering engine is the same as DPP1.1

It works, I have version 5 of the solution CD and the updates work flawlessly.
I like what I see for user interface and it seems a bit easier than C1 but I have to check that all tomorrow after a session.

Why is this so difficult to understand? Read what I wrote above and what Canon writes on their website. You do not need an older version of DPP. You need to have one of the products in the list installed.

So if you have FVU, EVU, an older version of DPP or "RAW Image Task" (I've never heard of that?) installed you can install the upgrade. If you've never installed the DPP that came with your 20D, you must install it first.

Simple......

Thanks for the links - up and running with 10D.

What an absolutely fantastic concept: non-destructive editing of RAW files!!! :D

This looks very promising - it even has sharpening option (0-5, default 0) in the batch processing dialog box.

Minor drawback - in addition to MacOS, it is only supported under WinXP/2000, so there's no point of complaining of some bugs under Windows Me:

- Browse for a folder doesn't work (prefs/open, batch/output folder)
- Fit in Window view doesn't work (50-100-200% work ok)

Otherwise it seems to work ok. These little problems seem not to appear in XP.

A wish for this and almost every other batch processing program:
Batch Resize has to be done separately for landscape/portrait orientation
There should be option to resize according to longest side or at least percentage for whole picture.

...usually no need for resize when converting RAW to TIFF, though.

Miika

PS! It doesn't recognize G3 RAW files :?

Their instruction manual would make it seem so. I was able to download this program. However, my RAW files (.CRW) do not display in this program. I have the D60. Wondering if anyone else has this problem and if so were you able to make it work. I have yet to be able to download an EOS Viewer Utility as that did not originally come with my camera. Could that be part of the problem?

I downloaded DPP1.5 last night and tried it out. The color wheel feature is nice--and for me, it's more intuitive than the simple sliders in ACR. But ACR appears to have more features--like noise reduction and fringe reduction. Does DPP have these features and I just can't find them?

Scott, if I'm not mistaken, the old version is deleted by the install program once it's verified that you have it or one of the other "eligible" program installed.

EVU is like DPP. If you have FVU, you can download either or both and install.
