Hey Folks,
I hope this is the right place to post this....somehow it seemed more appropriate than Nature and Wildlife.

I don't normally do shots like this and I'm certainly not a "studio photographer" (at least not yet) but I had a few minutes yesterday and I had just gotten some fresh roses for my wife the day before, so I was messing around a bit.

This one was shot with my Canon Rebel XT and Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens at f/3.5, 1/30 sec ISO 100. For lighting I used my Bower flash off camera fired into a silver/gold umbrella and a desk lamp down on the side to bring out the stem a little bit. The back lighting was done with a hand held Mag light and the back drop is actually my t-shirt that I duct taped to the wall! LOL!!! I used an old Windex bottle rinsed and filled with water to "moisen things up a bit". Lot's of improvising here :D.

This second shot used a similar setup, but instead of using the flash and the desk lamp, the flower is simply lit with the Mag light. I guess in a way you might consider this "painting with light". The settings here were f/8, 2.5 sec ISO 400.

Both shots were poked, prodded and totally beaten into submission in Photoshop.

As always, C&C is welcomed and encouraged....since I was just playing around here, I'd like to know what people like and what folks think could have been done better!

Peace,
Jim

I like the second one as well.
I like how the rose contrasts with the dark blue-ish backgrourd.

I like how the rose contrasts with the dark blue-ish backgrourd. It's kind of interesting that you mentioned that because it's actually the exact same background...a black t-shirt, in both images. I think the reason it looked so brown in the first image was because of the use of the desk lamp (with an ordinary incandescent bulb) vs. the use of only the Mag light in the second shot (and I have no idea what the color temp of a Mag light is! LOL!). I've always known that color temperature was a factor with white backgrounds, but I didn't really know it played such a factor with a black t-shirt! LOL!!!

Anyways, thanks for the comments!
Peace,
Jim

I like both of these...the first has an almost old-fashioned feel. The second is just very pretty - the mist is a good touch.
