I have had a problem consistanly getting the clouds and close objects in a picture bright and focused. Here is an example:

As you notice, in image 2 the sky looks great but the trees in the foreground are super saturated and dark. In Image 1 the tree and foreground objects look good and bright, but the sky is washed out.
How can I get a good balance in these types of shots? Do I have to have the apeture to make the depth of field a little bigger/smaller?
I am using a Canon Digital Rebel.
