Hi fellows!
I've posted this photo in the SHARE section, but I need some critique on it. Do you think it's a good photo? Be honest please.
Shot with EOS 300D and EF50/1.8 wide open. RAW processed in PS CS.

edit: It's an old wooden house in the background.

I would have liked to see one of two things, either a tigher crop on the rose - but that would get rid of the house, which you like OR - reshoot with the rose higher in the frame.
Either way, the rose takes up too little of the available space and does not effectivly counterbalance the weight of that big heavy brown roof.

EDIT: I DO like the windows behind the rose, though - and technically, the rose itself is not a problem. Sharp subject, nice bokeh, just out of balance to my eye.

Hi Rad!
As usual, you've just made a very helpful critique. Thanks!

I too would make the rose take up more of the frame.

Good for what? It really depends on what you want to use it for or communicate with it.

I just mean to say "do you like it?".

I have trouble with the background (sorry!) I think it would work if you had the house or the sky background, but having both is too much. Going from white walls to dark brown roof to light blue sky is just too distracting for my taste.
I do like the tight DOF though :D

Don't be sorry! I understand your position. I think this type of house is completely unknown for you. So you don't have to like it and this is normal. I appreciate opinion and your comment. It is very helpful to me. Thanks!

I'm no where near a pro, but I find myself ignoring the rose completely and looking at the fuzzy house trying to picture what it would look like in focus, which I think you probably didn't want.
...maybe it's just my attention span deteriorating...
{edit} Looking at it more, I like the rose too, but I find the house and rose are fighting for my attention. I agree with the other posts that cropping it further makes it a better picture.

I get that feeling too. I think it's due to the reason big_b mentions... having that blurred seperation of the house and the sky. I find myself focusing more on the house than on the rose. But that could be what you were going for?

I think he was just going for a likable shot.
I gotta say, the image doesn't move me. Maybe because the artist wasn't trying to say much of anything--just going for a likable shot. My experience is that I don't like shots designed just to be nice or pretty.

I agree crop on rose more. It just seems like too much dof and not enough 'image' that I could get something out of. A feel like not having my glasses on. A little bit of a tighter crop on the rose and a little less dof and I would certainly enjoy it, good color scheme combo going on here anyways.

I agree with the previous comments about making a tighter crop. I find the roof in the background very distracting. Personally, I'd crop the roof and the right side out leaving just the 2 windows in the background.

Thank you fellows! I like the way this conversation goes. This means there is something unusual in the photo that makes you think about it. I'm trying to make a photo that will attract attention and will make people think about the main element - the house. I need this photo for the back cover of a tourist catalogue for this village (Jeravna). It's a museum-village, an architectural reserve protected by UNESCO. There are over 200 old wooden houses. All they are over 250-300 years old. It's an interesting place and I have fun making a catalogue for it.
If you like old wooden houses you can view more photos and take a free screensaver here: http://wave.prohosting.com/jeravna/scr.htm
