Just got my 70-200mm IS lens. It is focussing well, but when IS is on, I can hear a soft click and a very soft motorised sound for 2 to 3 sec when shutther is pressed half way to focus. I think this is the lens stabilsing the image, as I can see that the image becomes table. Is this normal and acceptable?

Thanks for your advice.....

My 75-300mm IS makes the exact same noises, I too think it's the IS motor, as I don't get this when IS is off. Been like this forever, I think you are cool with the noise.

Good luck with the lens, I hope to have that model one day. :)

My uneducated guess is that it is the sound of the gyros in the lens, as it does take a half a second or so for the IS to work. Mine does the same thing, but I take the sound as wholly normal.

I'm sure glad you started this thread because I heard the noise myself yesterday -- it was the first time I have ever used the lens in a quiet place. I bet it's normal and I'm anxious to hear what other folks think.

i posted the same thread about 6mo. ago. the sound is from the gyros spinning up when you press the shutter halfway to focus. all IS lenses do this, some are noisier than others.

Thanks for clearing up this issue so quickly. What a marvellous forum....look forward to reading the threads.

It goes without saying that the 70-200 IS is an amazing lens.

The IS on my 100-400 makes enough noise to make a dying elephant hiccough @ 400 metres

Works fine with ear muffs!

My 75-300 IS lens doesn't make very much noise -- as a matter of fact I wasn't even aware of any extra noise (over and above the autofocus sound) until this post and I just put my ear next to the lens and could hear it. Now that I know that it's there, from behind the viewfinder I can hear it but it certainly wouldn't bother anybody standing next to me.

My lens has the USM though, I wonder if that makes a difference, although as I understand things that applies to autofocus rather than the IS capability.

Now you've really got me worried - I can't hear mine at all! Maybe I should send it in for service. "Hey, Canon - my 100-400 IS L isn't noisy enough!"
