This was a first for me... thought I would give it a try. I've seen much nicer smoke photos but... these didn't trun out all that bad.
Let me know what you think :) good or bad.
Canon 580ex with a diffuser on it to the camera right... fired with a pocket wizard... Canon 5D+Sigma 180mm macro.
Thanks for looking.

Sweet dood. That first one looks like the 'liquid' terminator from T2. As with the smoke, I love the colors.
I've been wanting to get into this stuff for awhile, especially the water drops. Might have to mess around this weekend :D

Nothing elaborate... but.. fun. :) That was until I dropped my 430ex on the tile floor and busted the flash tube. Not cool!!! LOL

Very difficult to do:D LOL
Actually... so simple it is ridiculous.
Spend $.89 on the incense pack :)
Go to a controlled air environment... I used my garage as the smell of the incense wasn't something my wife would enjoy having in the house. LOL
I should have taken a shot of the setup... strobist to the max...
I used a trashcan to brace teh garage broom... I taped the burning incense to the broom.
I then used a pain can to old a broom handle...which was the support for a black winter coat I had in storage. This provided my background. It was placed about 3 ft from the incense.
I think placed a 580ex on a stand...moving the stand to about 4 inches from the smoke. I had a diffuser on the flash... it was set to manual... full power. It was triggered by a pocket wizard. You can use any flash or flash system you like.. just get the flash close to the smoke.
I think placed the camera on a tripod and shot away. Manual focus... using the 5D and the Sigma 180mm macro. I shot at ISO 50... could have shot ISO 100 looking back without issue. The light fall off from the flash was great... and I should have noticed this early on.
F/13-f/16 1/200th a sec...
That was about it...
I shot 157 photos.... 30-40 turned out... I liked 5... :)
Hope this helps... just have fun with it...
I toned the photos in Photoshop/Camera RAW... temp/tint adjustments. Except for the last shot.. that was a composite created in Photoshop.
