Price Drop On 20D after Xmas?

The 20D will come down once the market is saturated... Canon can't make these things fast enough to keep the pipeline full at the current price point. It's called "capitalism". Better get used to it :lol:

Price drops on this sort of equipment are inevitable, especially at the rate of change seen. I think the digitals will eventually fall to the same price as their film equivalents, you may even eventually see a premium for film! It does seem to be slowing slightly though.

They are getting close, as far as cameras go in my opinion after owning both and ignoring the fact one is film, and the other digital, the 20D is a better camera than the EOS30 functionality wise (probably sits between the 30 and 3) which is probably its closest film relative, it just costs two and a half times as much.

The thing to remember is though, you have to jump on sooner or later, I set a benchmark of requirements I wanted from a DSLR when the D30 was announced, the 20D meet it, so I bought one, sure I would have saved some $$$ by waiting six months or so, but I am now getting great shots :D

When the 30D comes out (or the 20Ds or 25D or whatever the next model will be called) then the price will drop as the 10D has done. The Digital Rebel has had a nice price drop since the introduction of the 20D.

But waiting for such a price drop, based on speculation, will be to deny yourself a lot of pleasure, and once the price drops on the 20D due to the issue of a newer, better, faster, lighter, full-frame, split-image-focus, whatever-new-feature model, you'll simply lust after the newer model and start wondering when the price will drop on THAT one.

Best to simply buy one now, practice so you can get terrific holiday shots, and don't worry about any future price drops.

You MIGHT find some price drops in local shops after the holidays, but as somebody has already said, they can't keep the pipeline filled at this price-point so there's no reason for Canon to drop their wholesale prices.

Bit the bullet, buy it now and think about the terrific pictures (that 1600ISO and even 3200ISO is enough to help you get wonderful holiday photos even without flash unless you want it!) and don't think about the money.

Life's short -- enjoy it now while you can.

In Canada atleast, the price of the 300D hasn't dropped that much.
I paid $1200 for the camera and lens last January. Most places here still sell it at that price.

im not saying dropping from $1500 to $1100. I was think more like $50-$100. At www.priceritephoto.com it just drop $30. Is priceritephoto.com and good?

In Canada the price drops nearly everyday, what with the current surge of the dollar. If the Looney keeps climbing it will be very tempting to pawn off the G3+accessories for a 20D.

Yup, good point. I bet the camera shops in canada are none too happy about this. Basically every week since the 20D was released it loses value every day relative to what it cost them to buy it, and relative to the price in the US.
The way things are going, it wont be long before we will be buying cameras from the US at par. However, camera prices in the US will also be rising, since in addition to the loonie becomng more valuable, the US dollar is becoming less and less valuable. And since these products are made in Japan or elsewhere, it's going to cost Canon and others alot more to manufacture and import these products.
Well, that's Bush for ya, he has actually stated that he doesn't care if the US dollar drops. I still dont know how the yanks voted him back in after he destroyed the economy the past 4 years.

I paid $1200 for the camera and lens last January. Most places here still sell it at that price.dropped down to £499 here in the uk with kit lens.started off at about £900 :cry:

Canon will introduce an ultra consumer-ized DSLR (the Digital Rebel II) with a very low price point, and then give a price reduction on the 20D. That way average consumers can start getting into the DSLR market, and serious hobbyists/semi-pros will have the 20D at a lower price than it is at now. Mean while pro's will continue to feast on the 1Ds and 1D mark two's.

This is only my theory...let me know what you guys think.

Price of the 10D didn't drop until the 20D became available, for the most part. Sure, there were dealers here and there that had some discounted but the supply for those was very small. In fact the 10D didn't drop at all with the intro of the 300D.

For once, I bought a camera and the price didn't drop as soon as I opened the box (bought my 10D in July 2003) ... wish I could have said that for the lenses ... :lol:

I don't think the 20D price will drop until it's replacemement hits the market. It looks like sales are booming and there is no reason to drop the price, after Christmas or not, intro of a replacement for the 300D or not.

Read back and one of the most asked questions was "Should I spend $1500 for a 10D or will the 300D be good enough" ... I never regreted the extra cost of the 10D (even though the 300D wasn't out when I bought the 10D)

$100 discount price drops are likely after supply exceeds demand, yes. $300-400 price drop, probably not until the 20Ds successor is announced, or just before like they are doing with the Digital Rebel now, offering up to $300 in rebates, with no rebates on the 20D since no replacement has been announced.

The street price of the 1D Mark II has dropped by 20% since it's launch in the UK. It wouldn't be unreasonable to see a simillar drop on the 20D over the same period.
