20D Successor

So as a newbie to the photography scene i don't have the time served to have a feel for how Canon update their range. So how long do you expect it to be before the successor to the 20D comes along? How long was it between the 10D and 20D?

I just bought myself a Rebel last July so i don't think i have the skill to properly use a 20D at the moment but i will buy the next model when it comes along.

When do you think that will be?

The 20D came out 2.5 years after the 10D, which became available only one year after the D60. Go figure ...

Oleg, I think you're mistaken - the 10D came out in February 2003, which isn't even 2.5 years ago at the moment.

The 300D / Digital Rebel is the oldest model that's still in production.
I think there won't be a 20D successor for at least 1.5 to 2 years.

But there might be a Digital Rebel II that comes out in 6 months or so that is a 20D quality with less features, etc. like how the Digital Rebel made the 10D basically obsolete.

I'd be surprised if they make the 10D for much longer.

I guess the other question is, how long has the Digital Rebel been around.
Was it before or after the 10D?
I guess Canon are getting an extra mile out of the Rebel in black, but for how long.
I still think the 10D is a great camera, and have no intentions of upgrading.

I don't think they're still making the 10D since the 20D is out. The new 10D's that you see in shops is most likely old stock.

Since August 2003, so it's now the oldest current model - see my list above. It was introduced about six months after the 10D.

The black Digital Rebel is a limited edition model. Note that isn't even mentioned on http://www.canoneos.com . Maybe they introduced the black Digital Rebel to boost sales for the Digital Rebel before they're introducing a new model...... who knows...

I also have a 10D and I love it, and I don't intend to upgrade until the 20D successor becomes available. Sure, the 20D is a great camera and better than the 10D and I'd love to have it, but my 10D is only barely a year old and for me, the 20D isn't worth the money I'd have to spend on it.

I doubt that Canon will do that to itself with the Digital Rebel II and the 20D. Because even after the DR II is introduced, Canon will still have a year left in production for the 20D. That means that the 20D will still need to have a selling point over the Digital Rebel II. Maybe instead what will happen is that Canon will introduce an ultra consumer-ized DSLR (the Digital Rebel II) with a very low price point, and then give a price reduction on the 20D. That way average consumers can start getting into the DSLR market, and serious hobbyists/semi-pros will have the 20D at a lower price than it is at now. Mean while pro's will continue to feast on the 1Ds and 1D mark two's. What do you guys think?

When they turn the 20D into the Digital Rebel II they'll boost the sales big time like they did when they turned the 10D into the Digital Rebel. Digital camera makers have been rolling out products so incredibly fast the past 2 years it'll make your head spin.

Even with printers. In 3 weeks time I saw that half of the printers at a Best Buy now have LCD screens for people to print and view digital images from their memory cards. For a lot of electronics, manufacturers seem to want consumers to buy new products rather than support ones just a couple years old. We live in a disposable world.

I doubt the DR made the 10D obsolete. You have different functions available with the 10D than the DR. You also have different price points. So actually what Canon did is create a multiple price point product that will/has allowed Canon to gain additional market share.

Canon has been after the largest market share that it can get for the last few ywars and seems to be doing very well. I have taken a few test shots with the 20D but I will keep my 10D and two 1D's for now. I hope to upgraade to a 1DmkII eventually but it certainly can wait for a while. I still think that evetually the market will become saturated. I know I can't shell out that kind of money every year or two to keep uo with the new technology.

I fully agree with RogCincy, why does everybody keep saying that the 10D was turned into the Digital Rebel.
People should read the specs on both cameras, I agree the DR is a nice camera but it's NO 10D.

My official guess at this time is the DRII wil be in early Spring 2005 time if at all and replacement for 20D will be between early fall 2005 and late winter 2006, with me leaning towards Feb 2006.
