Inspired by this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=33226) I bought a couple of cheap ones from SterlingTek (http://store.yahoo.com/sterlingtek/cabaandch.html) and so far so good. You can find more info in that thead.
Didn't get any caps though.:lol:

I also purchased 2 batteries from Sterling Tek. No complaints thus far, and the price is unbeatable!

I know the G3-G6, and I think all the Gs can use the same battery
The only difference is the amp hours, which is only a determination of the amount of storage a battery has. The newer cameras come with longer life (more amp hours) batteries.
For the price, I think I will give them a try.
with a couple batteries, they will only get half the use anyways.

Will keep this thread updated once i buy and use it.

I paid just under $25 for a 1500mAh BP-511 I found on Ebay. Works great, lasts a long time.

***** Warning *****
I saw someone's thread regarding these "Sterling-Tec" batteries some months back, and decided to get a couple of them. I've been using them consistently along-side of the original BP-511 that came with my G3, and a second Canon BP-511 battery that I bought from Wolf Camera as a back-up. I've been somewhat disappointed with how long they last compared to the Canon batteries...it seems the Canon's outlast the Sterling Tek's by far. I haven't done any real comprehensive tests on them, but I'd like to hear if anybody else has had the same results.........Mackroe

I bought a Uniross BP-511 (not A) equivelent one new and sealed off Ebay for £10, it took 300 shots all with flash and TFT the other week and it was still going strong. I know it wasnt the cheapest as there are ones out there for £3 but i went for the uniross one as it is a brand i have faith in.

I need a spare battery for my G3 and almost ordered one from Sterling Tek. With shipping, the cost of the battery was less than $20.00. I then started to think about the various comments being posted in this and another recent thread about the Sterling Tek and other non-Canon batteries not performing as well as the Canon battery. The cost, with shipping, from BH Photo for the Canon battery is almost exactly $55.00. The $20.00 battery is seductively cheap but I never wanted to be in a situation of not having a sufficiently charged battery and wishing I spent the relatively trivial $35.00 more for the Canon battery. Last year, while on a vacation, I unexpectedly depleted the battery in the G3 and my spare was in the car which was not readily accessible. I remember thinking that I would have easily paid for a new charged battery on the spot if it was available. Since I want both batteries to be interchangable and not be concerned about designating one (the Canon) as the primary battery to use first, I decided the $20.00 Sterling Tek battery was a false economy. I thought this is a line of thought that might be considered before making the decision to buy a very cheap battery.

Unless the SteringTek IS as good, then you just saved enough for a 512mb CF card, or another battery, or charger.
One thing about LiIon batteries,
If you have a cheap battery that is stored just for backup use that is not charged for weeks it will loose its charge and seem defective. The canon battery will do the same.
LiIon batteries loose charge as a function of time, not just use, that is why they should be stored fully charged, and charged often.

You definitely can't say that 'the eBay batteries' as a whole are better or worse than Canon batteries.
My guess, however, is that 95% of the batteries offered cheaply on eBay are significantly worse than either Canon or other brand batteries (e.g. Lenmar, Duracell, ...)
This is also my personal experience from buying some no-name BP511 batteries from eBay for 15$ a piece ... they don't have half the power of my original BP511.
So after about 10,000 shots in my G2, my original BP511 started to show signs of decreased capacity ... but it's still good for about 250 shots with moderate flash and LCD usage ... a lot better than the no-name batteries I bought when new. So I gladly bought a new original BP511 battery to go along with it.
Best regards,
Andy

I've purchased several batteries, ranging from 1300mAH to 1800mAH, on eBay for short $$....have had no issues or concerns.
