I got this lens with an EOS-3 for $75, just waiting for it to get here. The EOS-3 has less than 1000 clicks and the 28mm is even newer :D both are MINT MINT MINT! Same guy I got a bunch of other hardly touched items from including the sharpest 35-80mm (MKI) I have ever seen and another under 1000 cluck EOS-1.

I wanted to ask:
Where is this lens the sharpest? What does it like to be stopped down to?

I do a lot of landscape and car photography.

I hope more people add more pictures, I would love to see more :D

As soon as it gets here I will upload mine. They will be taken with a 40D.

Since this lens looks like the Nifty Fifty, does that mean it shares it's same auto focus motor? Or does it have a more accurate focus?

Also, how sharp is this lens wide open? 100% crop's would be nice.

I have this lens, only because my dad had it for his SLR, but haven't taken many pictures with it. I think one of the pictures on my Flickr is from this lens. I'll edit and post it.

edit: I took this picture with the 28mm.

umm... picked up this lens in a craiglist deal a week or two back and finally got around to playing with it. Holy crap... this is a nice lens. I'll try to get out with it and post some pics, but just for the record, I like it. I would put this right in with the nifty fifty as far as good, economical primes... although not all that great for low light. I haven't peeped yet, but initially looks sharper than my 24-70L at 28mm.

Okay... not quite as sharp, especially in the corners. But nice overall. I'm wondering why this lens is such an underdog.

Just picked one up. I was having some misfocus errors on it which strangely enough turned out to be caused by a UV filter.

Anyway, once I took off the UV, it turns out it can take very nice images. Here's a comparison to the nifty 50, taken of a boring grocery ad.

100% crops shot JPEG with sharpness set at 5 out of 7
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp241/tkbslc/28mmf28vs50mm18.jpg

It beats the 50 handily, when both are wide open. With the 50 stopped down to 2.8 to match, it still holds up well, but barely loses. At f4+ (not shown), you can't tell them apart.

I'll get some real world shots up over the next week or 2.

I've been using this lens a little more today. I am finding it every bit the counterpart to the 50mm 1.8. It has loud, slow AF that often struggles in low light. But when it nails it, man, it is SHARP! Size is even identical to the nifty fifty. The focal length is right around 45mm equivalent on a 1.6x crop camera which is perfect for a "normal" prime.

Here's a shot at f2.8 along with a full crop. Shows the bokeh you can expect, too. I find with the wider focal length and slower aperture, the backgrounds do not blur quite as readily as with the 50mm 1.8, but still noticeably more than the kit lens.

You mean the 24L? No contest there, but the 24L is 10x the price. If you meant the 28mm 1.8 USM, I think they are comparable at f2.8+, but I would bet money the AF on the 28 1.8 is a LOT better.

Here's a couple more in low light at ridiculous handheld shutter speeds. For some reason I have more luck handholding this lens than any of my others. It is almost like it has IS. :) With my nifty fifty, I almost need 1/100 to guarantee a sharp shot, and look at the bottom one here - 1/5th! Of course it helps when the kid goes into zombie mode watching the tv and remains frozen.

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp241/tkbslc/lens%20samples/IMG_5180.jpg

I like this lens quite a bit, but it just seems like it needs one more stop to be a killer lens. But then that takes me to the 28mm 1.8 USM - which is 3x the price and needs to be stopped back to f2.8 to be sharp like this lens.

hello flipmarc,
nice pics, i am planning to buy 28/2.8 for my 300d body. will be doing mostly landscapes and some portraits. wondering if you could tell me if you have found any problems with 28/2.8 in terms of distortions, flaring at wide open and when stopped down.
many thanks

Hello tkbslc and others,
I am a new member and i am glad that i have joined the forum. i have a 300d and the kit lens 18-55. i was snapping away dull snaps and just recently got interested in photography, got myself 50/1.8. the lens is great but wanted to go for 28/2.8 for some outdoor work. i see that you guys have loads of experience comparing both 50/1.8 and 28/2.8. what will be your suggestions regarding 28/2.8. any advantage over 50/1.8 for outdoor work. i have packed up my 50/1.8 ready to exchange it for the 28/2.8, so your suggestions will be very much appreciated.
many thanks

Really it comes down to the focal length and what you want to do. The 50mm is pretty long a 1.6x crop sensor like on your 300d. It is great for close ups and you need some room to work. The 28mm becomes a mid length "normal" prime. Good for all around use. Another big difference is the background blur. It is harder to get the really blurred backgrounds with the 28mm, because it is shorter and only f2.8, vs 1.8 on the 50mm.

Honestly, there are the same class of lens. They look almost identical side by side and they both have great sharpness and color. the 28mm is built a little better in that it has a metal mount, but nothing to worry over. I would suggest taking your 18-55 and setting it to about 50mm and taking some shots and then setting it to about 28mm and see which fits in with your style more.

I am going to try and keep both and then maybe add an 85 or 100mm to go with them. To have lots of shooting scenarios covered.

Many thanks for the help.

I want to do some outdoor work and f2.8 is fine i hope on the 28 as i am not too keen on background blurr. i hope i have made up my mind to swap the 50mm and go for 28mm just because of the fact that i could get some more of the background onto the frame when compared to 50mm. but my worry was that 50mm was really sharp and did not want to loose the crispness with the 28mm which has this supposed distortions and softness coming up in the edges. but i am reassured that they are both same on most f stops. i hope to get 50mm ( at £99, it is ok on the budget) at a later date when my little daughter grows up and will be staying still in the room without fidgetting much.

i worked on my 18-55 but is not that crisp with colours and brightness, guess the f stops make the difference and the optical quality of the primes make them better or that my 18-55 is having some problems. it might well be that i need to be better at understanding my 18-55.

many thanks once again and i hope to be in touch

That guy is misinformed. There is only one version of the 28mm f/2.8.

The 28mm f/2.8 looks almost identical to the 50mm f/1.8 Mk I. Maybe that is where the confusion comes from.

I think I have you beat, I just picked one up an hour ago for $75... with a 50mm f/1.8 II, Velbon tripod, old Lowepro bag, and an EOS 10s. Oh and Hoya filters on them both. :D

Mine appears pretty sharp wide open, and with zero sharpening.

I have one that I drag out every once in a while. I bought mine back in the early 90's when I was going to school and taking photojournalism classes and shooting for the college newspaper. It was a great lens back then and it's still as sharp today. But since the addition of my 24-70 f2.8L to my kit the 28mm f2.8 doesn't get much action anymore. I'll probably end up selling it here soon. I did use it a while back for some sports shots. I was messing around with various lenses and this shot just worked real well.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2740/4279469672_d2c1a684a4_b.jpg

I can't recomend this lens as a sports lens. It's focusing motor just isn't fast enough to track the action. I just got somewhat lucky with that one. But if the subject isn't moving much, then it's a perfectly fine lens.

I might just keep it as it is a really old lens and I've had it for so very long. My daughter is getting into shooting, so maybe I'll keep it around for her to use. Who knows...

It does have the same build as the original 50mm f1.8, but it should be noticeably sturdier compared to the newer 50mm f1.8 II. It has a metal mount, a real focus ring and a distance scale.

Anyway, nice find for $50. Someone obviously didn't know what they had.

Yep, that is the lens. Metal mount, distance scale, etc. I jumped on it pretty quickly and drove 45mins to pick it up. We've in the process of moving and the wife and I wee running errands. She wasn't too happy about me deviating from our planned route, but I wasn't about to miss this one. Once I showed her what they sell for, she felt a lot better about it. Nice little lens...

Are you saying that from the photos that you have seen here, your 18-55 produces better photos?

Or are you saying you have used both lenses, and you get better results from your 18-55?

Either way I think your statement is not accurate because either lens can produce very good photos, but they can both produce crap photos if not used properly. For most people the 18-55 IS is more useful because of the Image Stabilization and 18-55 focal range. For some people the extra stop of aperture, and smaller size of the 28mm 2.8 are more important.

Hi all,
I want to buy this lens. Im second photographer at weddings - and I need fast lens for low light indoor shoots of one person or small groups of people.

So I would like to see some photos of indoor portraits. And if you can tell me how god focusing is in low light situations. Tnx.

I've been using this as my primary lens for a couple months now. I've never shot with a full frame but i'm guessing if I ever switch to FF, the 50mm will get used a lot...

Is it the price that's luring you?

If not you might want to consider that there are zooms that are just as fast (F/2.8), still very sharp, quite cheap, and offer more flexibility such as the Tamron 28-75.

Yes price is big dill for me. I have 150€ max ,, 200€ max max ,, and for a few months I will have even less :) ... I can find used Tamaron 28-75 for ~300€ (in my country).

I don need flexibility in mm instead I need F as fast as possible,, 24-28 mm is working for me fine. My search say that only Canon 28mm 2.8 is in my price range.

btw. tnx for advice

Earlier this year I was in the market for a 28mm lens and I was trying to justify buying the f/1.8 vs. the f/2.8. Then the earthquake in Japan happened and lens prices skyrocketed. The f/2.8 became my only option at the time and I've gotta say, its performed quite well. This is definitely a lens that if you understand the limitations, and work within those, you can get some really great shots.

All shots are using a T2i & Canon 28mm f/2.8. Basic post processing was done(brightness, color correction, etc.). The first three shots were from an outdoor music festival. The other four were from a rock bar with a really nice stage lighting setup.

The band are some friends of mine called Gunship Radio (http://gunshipradio.net).

Just picked up this lens second hand. I'm happy with how sharp and contrasty it is.
I was thinking it was going to be on the wide side. But I like this focal length.

Blair; love the 'piggy' photo. Yes, this lens would be just a tad wide on the FF but not enough to be a bother. It's perfect on my crop body (60D).

Loving this lens. You couldn't ask for more sharpness than this.

I'm finding not that wide now. It seems to have a lot less distortion that my 17-40mmL set at 28mm.

I find myself using it more for video.
Great little lens, especially the price I paid for it! :)
Here's a quick comparison against the 17-40L

Sold my 17-40L while I was shooting with the 5D so don't know how it would act on a crop body but the extra 11mm might be fun to play with. Temps are supposed to go over 70degrees tomorrow so I'll definitely be out on the bike and get some outdoor photos with the 28mm and 60D for the first time. I'll post my results.

I was looking to buy 1 of these second hand but the prices seem to have shot up, around £200 on the bay, utter madness

Yeah, that is steep for used but it appears they are out of stock most places. Keep looking though, the lens is worth the hunt.
