I previously posted a message about a problem with my 10D camera taking soft pictures. Fist of all, thanks to everyone who responded to my posting with helpful hints. As I stated in my last message I joined a local camera club in which I had an opportunity this weekend to test my camera with two other 10D users from the club. The first gentleman was a retired photographer who owned his own studio. The second person was an amateur photographer with many years experience. Both of them owned a Canon IS 28-135mm lens and used it for this test. All three of us took a portrait picture of my wife and viewed it on a computer. Without making any adjustment to the pictures in Photoshop my picture was a little softer than the other two. The picture was still in the acceptable range and was happy with the results. We then went outside and I setup my tripod to take a picture of a waterfall and the surrounding plants. Using my camera I took two pictures: one set on auto and the other on Av with the f-stop set to 11. The waterfall was about 25 feet from my camera where I wanted the foreground and background to be in focus. This is where I have experienced problems with my camera taking soft pictures (outside and landscape scenery). I removed my lens and installed the other two separately under the same conditions. The other two lenses produced sharp clear pictures (Auto & Av) where my lens was very soft. In summary the camera is ok but the lens is unacceptable.
About 45 days after I purchased my camera I returned the camera and lens to Canon for repair because of the soft pictures. They returned it saying the lens and camera just needed to be tuned together. Maybe the lens quality is within an acceptable range to Canon but when I paid the same price ($495.00) as they did I expect the quality. The mystery is solved and the problem has been identified. As this is my only lens its time to save up for a new one and experience the quality of pictures I purchase the camera for.
Thanks for everyone’s help.
