I see that Canon makes a wireless remote for the XTI (think it is RC1), and it is very inexpensive. Do they make such a animal for the 40D?

I can't find one. I have a corded one that cost 3 times the one for the XTI.

Does this mean the XTI has this receiver built in that the 40D doesn't? WHY

I just got the 40D to add to XTi. The 40D does not have an IR receiver (thank you, Canon). Canon sells a battery grip thing that instead of holding batteries has electronics to enable wireless remote functions.

If you go to Amazon and type "40D remote" in Search, there's all kinds of third-party stuff out there.

The wireless grip for the 40D is not a remote release mechanism, unless you want to consider a laptop as a remote trigger.

The wireless releases for the 40D use radio waves, so are more reliable across distance than the IR release of the DRs. The IR releases also want the trigger to be in front of the camera, since they're strictly line-of-sight.

There used to be a 100m range one made by ADIDT which worked very nicely; I have one, but it seems they are no longer making wireless units.

Now there is one short range 30' wireless unit available thru Adorama

and a longer range 100', fancier one also thru Adorama

The only true canon wireless remote for the 40D is the LC-5, that comes in at a whopping overpriced $450!

Just pickup a ebay wireless trigger if you need one. Pretty much the same thing as those adorama ones but cheaper.

Really all the triggers do is short two pins on the connector.

I've been testing one purchased off ebay after reading good reviews on it. Made by Phottix, doing business as HKSuppies. The ebay member id is etefore. It was 37.00 US with 12.00 postage. Its made and shipped from China. Mail time was only 12 days. Like the reviews suggested, it is well made and has worked perfectly so far. It focuses and has options for continuous, single, 2 second delay and bulb. Also, the piece that plugs to the camera can be held in place by the hotshoe connection so its not dangling around the camera body. I've never purchased camera products from one of these Asian manufactures before but decided to take a chance. Looks like a good deal considering what Canon wants for their wireless remote. The Phottix is radio signal controlled (preferred). Not infrared (IR) line of site. If I remember right they also have a website with product information.

I was using an old LC-2 wireless remote (from my film days) with a cord adapter to fit my 30D and 40D. It actually worked pretty good. You had to remember to pre-focus the camera on the subject prior to triggering the remote release button though. (a little difficult if your doing self portraits :) It also is IR (line of site) and the remote would have to be held in such a way it wouldn't show up in the picture. That is if you were both in the picture and triggering the remote. The Phottix can be held out of sight.

I couldn't help but think...what am I going to get for 37.00! But like I said it appears to be a pretty good remote. Hope this helps.
