I recently purchased an off-camera battery -- large battery pack with a wire running to a dummy battery in your camera -- for use with my Canon S400 Elph. So far, it seems to work great and I have not used up the power in it yet.
It was purchased from TigerDirect.com in the USA. At first, the dummy battery did NOT work for the camera. I contacted DIGICOM support(support@digicomdigital.com) and they were able to get the corrected part and sent it to me.

My luck with non-Canon batteries was not good so I decided to try something "completely different." Time will tell....
