Hey Miles-

It is tempting to use all the neat "effects" available in post production.

However, I suggest you stay with "traditional" types of shots. Let the camera do the work. If you continue to use effects - label your gallery as photo art or photo graphics. It is a real turn off to expect good photos and then see common filter effects applied to a shot.

You live in a photo rich part of the world. Pick a subject type (architecture, landscape, city life, wildlife etc) then explore that area until the comments start to get really positive.
