Hi guys,

My name is James, I have only quite recently taken up photography more seriously since starting in my Graphic Design: New Media degree. I have just started a new job in Jessops which gives me alot of freedom to explore the products at my own will aswell as the cheeky discount :)

I am currently using a 400D with the standard 18-55mm lens, aswell as a Tamron 70-300mm f5.6

I am interested in seeing anyones examples of what can be achieved from a motorsport perspective with anything between 70 and 300mm at f5.6 or higher.

I also want to share with you a couple of photos I have taken at the one race meeting I have managed to attend with my equipment. It is a bit grainy as are alot of my photos and I am wondering what people can advise me is causing this and how I can fix it?

Taken at Lydden Hill...

And just a few pics of my car, its an S1 Peugeot 106 Rallye, extensively modified for track use.

The 2 that i could read EXIF off of appear to have been shot at f/32. I'd drop ISO from your 400/800 and open that lens up.

How can you get that from those pics?? I didnt think it was that high. The ISO was around 800-1600, shutter about 1/80

I read the EXIF.

No need for your ISO to be anywhere near that high.

Apologies I was not familiar with EXIF reading software.

No need to apologize; welcome to POTN!

Your panning skills look good.

Thanks, I was quite pleased with them for a first time. I was disapointed however I couldnt get any more a head on shots with a defined DOF surrounding the subject. I assume now this is related to my aperture limitations on the lens. However I cant honestly remember what settings I was using on the day.

with the 400d i rarely found myself using above 400 iso 800 on a few occasions.

I would usually shoot on an overcast day iso 400 with 250 F10ish or 320 f9ish

1600 is really for very dark shots or shots you want to use noise as an effect.

300mm is pleanty of length for alot of circuits, even if you need to crop a bit afterwards.

Nice pans, esspecially for 1/80th

Agreed, I'd be interested in hearing why you thought you needed your ISO to be so high??? I think you probably could have easily got down to 200 if not even 100 ISO in that situation....

# Exposure Mode = auto exposure (0)
# White Balance = auto (0) I'd suggest that you get off Auto, too.
Need an exposure crutch? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=89123)
More on how the subject affects the exposure in Post # 47 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=5191658&postcount=47)

Welcome to POTN!

He was on Shutter Priority: Sorry, my wrong reference. Thanks, & while that's true, compared to manual, it's still somewhat "auto", isn't it?
