Does anyone know if the 17" Mac Book Pro will fit in the Vertex 200 and if so does the padding provide adequate protection for the notebook?

I'm looking at getting a Notebook/ Photo bag to carry with me offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. I am very interested in the fastpack 350, but would also prefer the AW feature.

May end up with the Fastpack 350 and a separate rain cover.

Thanks,
SHO

I think you want the Vertex 300 for a 17" notebook.

Yes, I know that Lowepro says its for 17" notebooks. but by the internal notebook compartment dimensions its larger than a 17" Mac Book Pro. Though not by a lot.

I was just hoping to hear from someone that may have actually tried it. Was wondering how tight a fit it might be if it does fit.

Still waiting....Thanks

I'm actually on the hunt for a similar bag... Something for a good bunch of gear and a 17" MBP. The Tamrac Cyberpacks seem interesting though I'm just starting my research.

Just checked it the 17" MacbookPro, in a InCase neophrene sleeve, just fits into the Vertex 200

Hope that helps.

I keep saying, look at the Lowepro CompuRover. It will fit a 17" laptop, a bunch of camera gear, a handful of other crap, and it has an AW cover.

Thanks Tom... I have one of the InCase sleeves along with a Spec hard clear shell.

Thats great news, gives me another option. I haven't seen these bags in person.

Tom, do you feel that with the tight fit that it still has adequate protection?
This bag will end up in a helicopter baggage compartment along with other baggage.

As the macbook is within the Incase sleeve I would say that the protection is adequate but a tight fit.

In my own usage, it only goes as flight baggage not hold luggage on aeroplanes but that is due to wanting to keep an eye on my kit rather than for fragility reasons.

Thanks for the ideas, I have been researching a few days. Mostly compared to the tamrac Adventure & Expedition models.

I did notice that the Vertex 200 notebook compartment is actually a little bit bigger than the Tamrac Cyberpack 8.

Thanks for the thoughts. I want to be able to have the 100-400 mm attached. Thats why I have ruled out the CompuRover AW.

Thanks again Tom,
Two more questions. Do you like having the notebook compartment on the front of the bag? And do you think the bag rides better on your back with it there instead of against your back as many backpacks are designed?

I do realize that you I would have to be al little more careful opening the bag when the notebook is in the bag.

I don't have problem with the notebook compartment being at the front - the laptop is still well protected .

For me, the bag fits comfortably on my back and well padded and supported. I would say that because immediately next to your back you have the compartments of the bag with there items and hence there is always going to be a degree of flexing against your back. If the laptop compartment is next to your back you have a solid mass and no ability to flex.

I am sure that others here will have different opinions but the bag works well for my needs.

Apart from the laptop the usual load is something like 2 1D bodies, a 16-35 and either a 300 f2.8 or a 500 f4 - bodies unattached to lenses. You will have no problems with a 100-400, with hood & body attached.

A bag is always a personal choice - and always to small!
