Yeah, that's really not a great card. According to Rob Galbraith's review, it is one of the slowest cards on the digital rebel, too. If you are going that low quality you can do better. eCost is selling the Simpletech 1Gb for $44 right now, but why not just go for the extra $5 and get the Lexar 40x for $65.

Lexar 80x for $79.95 at B&H  (fast and high-grade for an extra $20)

Fastest 1Gb cards for the 20D are the Sandisk Ultra II, Sandisk Extreme and Lexar 80x. They are so close in speed to each other it's not an issue. These are the fastest cards for the 20D, including the 2Gb versions of these cards which are actually slower. I personally avoid the Lexars because their initial revision was EXTREMELY slow and there are still some floating around on store shelves, so I figure why take the chance?

Low and slow.......... a lifestyle

...and one which I miss dearly....

More on topic, I was about to become unhappy until I realized that this is not the Sandisk Ultra-II version which is fairly fast (and fairly cheap at www.newegg.com BTW). I just ordered an Ultra-II 1GB card.

:) I also tend to stay with the SanDisk CFs. However, to see the real-meal-deal, go here: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007

The best CF database on the planet.

Yes, this is the CF Bible. I never buy or recommend a card to a friend without checking there first. It's why I decided to avoid the Lexar, because there are two versions of the 80x listed.

1Gb Sandisk Ultra II is only $84 and Erwincomp.com, btw. I still can't get over how fast these things are dropping. I paid $100 two months ago, and that was a huge drop from this past summer, and now they are down another 15% for the fastest cards in only two months time.

1GB 4x USB CompactFlash Memory Card
Manufacturer: Lexar Media
Mfg Part #: CF1GB-231
Product Number: 302957
$99.99

How's this? also CompUSA

Does the speed really make a big difference? These are the only cards I have used. Heck I can only shoot so fast, usually faster than I think, that's why I went digital, less wasted film

4x? OMG! If that works for you, then that's a bonus. The reason those cards are so cheap is that no one wants them anymore.

If that's the best card you want then you waaaay overbought your camera.

Ok, just for you, I looked it up in the CF database.

Sandisk Standard 1GB

821K/sec

Sandisk Ultra II 1GB
(Edge stamp: BB0306VZ CHINA)
1.284MB/sec

That's a 50% speed improvement.

1Gb 60x Sandisk Ultra II for $82.95 (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/erwincomputers/sa1gbuliico6.html)

You can get a faster card (one of the fastest), for less :
here (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=321879&is=REG)

And yes speed does make a difference. Unless the extra 20 bucks will absolutely kill you, go for the speed.

To be honest, the speed in the digital rebel will not be that noticeable unless you regularly fill the buffer, but if you use a USB 2.0 reader you will be able to transfer to the PC a hell of a lot faster. But, then again, the longer that download takes the more cold ones you can get to while waiting, so something can be said for the slower cards.

In fairness to the Sandisk "Standard" 1gig card (which I have). It was faster then my Lexar 12x 256meg cards in my 10D and D60 cameras.

On the flip side it is slower then molasses in my 1DsMkII and I presume the same for a 20D. My Lexar 40X 1gig card is two to three times faster and it is in the middle of the pack according to Rob Galbraith's chart.

Me I am going for the 2gig or possible 4gig Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme cards next time I order from BH (which will probably be next week sometime). CompUSA, Circuit city and Best buy do not have the best prices on CF cards (unless they oops) and in my area they seem to be about 3-4 months behind of CF cards.

It does, but you have to know what it's relative to. (Sorta like 10X zoom lenses!) In the case of CF cards, the 1x is the old basic CD transfer rate of 150 KB/sec, not some hypothetical standard CF card. So your 4x Lexar's going to be slower than almost any current CD-burner can write.
