Think I need a tripod head for sports...

I'm getting inconsistent results with my 400 5.6L + 40D+grip. I know the lens is capable of sharp shots, but when I'm at the beach shooting surfing and following them with AI servo, things tend to get all soft. Is this me or my head? (no jokes please).

What are most sports shooters using for a setup like this? Ball? 3 way?

your set up isn't heavy at all. You should be able to handheld this combo with no problem. What is your shutter speed?

Ya I know, it's frustrating. Usually shooting between 600-1000.

Use a monopod maybe.
