Well I'm having trouble with it on my 10D, there's an error message and no longer focuses, I can only get rid of it by turning camera off and removing lens. Also shots appear somewhat soft especially on AI-SERVO and IS seems a bit loud. Anybody here relates to this?

Did something happen to the lens? Did it get dropped/mishandled in some way or something?

Not really, nothing out of the ordinary... I mean It's been moved around in a protected bag, but no hard hits..

Then send it to Canon.

Unfortunately you're experiencing the same lock up problem that many of have with that set up -- it happened to me twice during a shoot Saturday. Disconnecting and reconnecting the lens seems to be the only fix. If you do return the lens to Canon I'm sure a lot of us would like to know if they fix it. As for using AI-SERVO I have never found it suitable for sports photography when the target is a person and I'm using big glass because I can't stay locked on the target. This could be your problem too. I think the IS noise is normal.

If the problem isn't resolved by cleaning the contacts, then the IS unit is probably shot and needs to be replaced. The 70-200 2.8 IS has a history of the IS unit going bad. I hope yours is still under warranty!

The 70-200 F2.8 Canon EOS IS lens has been my worst nightmare and my biggest disappointment in a high priced L series lens.

(This is based on my experience with this lens, no need to post replies, it is only my opinion.)

Hi, JCK,

Is your D10 giving you a lens to camera communication error?
Have you notice if your camera lockups when IS is on? Are you able to shoot without locking up when IS is turned off. My lens locks every time I turn on IS, otherwise it performs normally. Your problem sounds a lot like mine. You can only clear the lockup by shutting the camera off and remounting the lens. It is probably the Image Stabilization unit.

Can you keep me posted if you send your lens back to Canon.for repairs. Unfortunately, this is the only lens I have so I have not been able to send it in for repairs. I plan on getting a wide angle zoom lens in a few weeks. Then I will sending my 70-200 IS lens in for repairs.

Thanks

Jim

Glad to hear I am not alone.... well, not really... but thanks for the responses, and I will send the lens to Canon Service, and I'll keep you posted.
