I have a sync cord but one end fits to the Wein slave and the other end doesnt seem to fit any connection on my 40d or XT. Which sync setup should i get exactly. What are my options. include link please.

Have no idea what the other end that does not fit you camera looks like. How about a pic?

If it is a PC connection you will need a hot shoe adapter.

I bought one for my Smith Vector lights and it works great.
Ohhh I see that one is out of stock at B&H but they have a few different brand names that are the same.

The 40d has a pc connection, no need for a hot shoe adapter. It sounds like the cable in question might not be standard, a picture would help.

If you are using your Speedotron in studio ( not concerned about others triggering your flash ), just plug the optical slave into the household sync on the power supply. You can then use either your pop up flash or 580 to trigger your speedotron. DON'T FORGET TO DIAL DOWN THE SMALL FLASH. Set the flash compensation to minus 3, so your pop up or 580 can't add to your exposure. Use manual settings.

You could also purchase 2 cords ( pc to household sync cord). Why 2? you can never have too many sync cords! PC NOT RELIABLE!

Best wishes, Don

You can then use either your pop up flash or 580 to trigger your speedotron. Using the pop-up flash of a digital camera this way would be an exercise in frustration. The E-TTL pre-flash will trigger the lights prematurely. If you use a hotshoe flash as a trigger, it must be in manual flash mode.

I think you're making this more difficult than it needs to be. Forget the Wein and get a cord with a PC male connector on one end and a household connector on the other, like this:

My sincere apology, I was certain that I could trigger the Speedotron with my pop-up flash, using the Wein slave. I just powered up my Speedotron, plugged in the Wein slave, and, not only would it not trigger with the preflash, it would not even fire at all. If I use on camera flash to fire ( rare ) the Speedotron, I use Vivitar manual flash units. They do work!

I am so used to using old manual flash units, that will indeed fire ( I just did it ) the slave, that I didn't consider it wouldn't work with the pop-up.

I am so sorry, I abhor giving lousy advise.

I do stand by having backup sync cords, however.

Best wishes, Don

If the Speedotron power pack is less than 15 years old (possibly longer) you will not need a Safe Sync.

The sync Voltage will be at most 50 Volts, and your 40D can tollerate up to 250 Volts. The XT will also tolerate 250 Volts.

Do not use a Safe Sync unless you actually need one as they are the source of sync issues also.

Just get a long sync cord that has a PC connector on one end and a HH connector on the other and you will be set. The XT will also require some sort of CAMERA hotshoe to PC adapter.

Enjoy! Lon
