I'm pretty new to DSLR, and everything I do is as a creative outlet, not as a professional. I've got the Drebel.
So I'm looking for a flash. Could you give me comparisons between the 420EX and the 550EX, or point me to websites that do? I'd rather not spend the extra for the 550EX if it has features I'll never use.
Thanks!

A simple search on this forum and/or the web will give you the answer.

In brief, the 550 will allow you more control, such as full manual, the ability to "master" other flashes in slave mode (including the 420 but not in reverse) and various other features and adjustments.
There is a sticky thread on EOS flash that may give you some insight, but I would suggest you give careful consideration to your uses for a flash, both current and future before making the choice.

Here are some threads with similar info:

But to me, the three main differences are:
550 has a better range (distance)
550 can control other flashes with the wireless system
550 allow you to set some parameters manually
