I have been reading these forums and absorbing as much as I can for the past few months. (Thanks for all your help, everyone!) The main reason I bought my xti was to photograph my son growing up. Next month he will be 1 year old and I would like to try to get some formal type ortrait shots of him.

For strobe equipment I have:
430ex, an OLD Canon speedlite 177a, and an OLD Kako flash (both the ladder not very strong)
1 shoot thr umbrella with stand
42" 5 in 1 reflector (maybe to shoot through the scrim)
An extended ETTL off shoe cord for the 430 and optical slaves for the other two flashes

So my question is what I should use the flashes for. Maybe the 430 on camera bounced for fill and the other lights as a main 45 degees off and a hair light. Maybe the third as a backdround light? All three off camera? What is the most appealing way to you to light a child that young? I know there are a million ways but what combination do you think is most flattering?

Thanks again everyone.

Edit: And I have also been asked to take a portrait of our family. There will be 7 adults and 2 kids both under a year. I can do this one however I want. Indoors or outdoors which is the best way to use the 430? It'll have to be on camera since I'll be on a trip and not lugging the umbrella, stand and cord around. Is bounce the best way to go indoors and fill flash outdoors? Are there any other general options?
